^{1 Ref} Paul, an Apostle of Jesus Christ by the purpose of God, and Timothy the brother, to the church of God which is in Corinth, with all the saints who are in all Achaia:

^{2 Ref} Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

^{3 Ref} Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort;

^{4 Ref} Who gives us comfort in all our troubles, so that we may be able to give comfort to others who are in trouble, through the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God.

^{5 Ref} For as we undergo more of the pain which Christ underwent, so through Christ does our comfort become greater.

^{6 Ref} But if we are troubled, it is for your comfort and salvation; or if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which takes effect through your quiet undergoing of the same troubles which we undergo:

^{7 Ref} And our hope for you is certain; in the knowledge that as you take part in the troubles, so you will take part in the comfort.

^{8 Ref} For it is our desire that you may not be without knowledge of our trouble which came on us in Asia, that the weight of it was very great, more than our power, so that it seemed that we had no hope even of life:

^{9 Ref} Yes, we ourselves have had the answer of death in ourselves, so that our hope might not be in ourselves, but in God who is able to give life to the dead:

^{10 Ref} Who gave us salvation from so great a death: on whom we have put our hope that he will still go on to give us salvation;

^{11 Ref} You at the same time helping together by your prayer for us; so that for what has been given to us through a number of persons, praise may go up to God for us from all of them.

^{12 Ref} For our glory is in this, in the knowledge which we have that our way of life in the world, and most of all in relation to you, has been holy and true in the eyes of God; not in the wisdom of the flesh, but in the grace of God.

^{13 Ref} For in our letters we say no other things to you, but those which you are reading, and to which you give agreement, and, it is my hope, will go on doing so to the end:

^{14 Ref} Even as you have been ready, in part, to say that we are your glory, in the same way that you are ours, in the day of the Lord Jesus.

^{15 Ref} And being certain of this, it was my purpose to come to you before, so that you might have a second grace;

^{16 Ref} And by way of Corinth to go into Macedonia, and from there to come back again to you, so that you might send me on my way to Judaea.

^{17 Ref} If then I had such a purpose, did I seem to be changing suddenly? or am I guided in my purposes by the flesh, saying, Yes, today, and, No, tomorrow?

^{18 Ref} As God is true, our word to you is not Yes and No.

^{19 Ref} For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, whom we were preaching among you, even I and Silvanus and Timothy, was not Yes and No, but in him is Yes.

^{20 Ref} For he is the Yes to all the undertakings of God: and by him all the words of God are made certain and put into effect, to the glory of God through us.

^{21 Ref} Now he who makes our faith strong together with you, in Christ, and has given us of his grace, is God;

^{22 Ref} And it is he who has put his stamp on us, even the Spirit, as the sign in our hearts of the coming glory.

^{23 Ref} But God is my witness that it was in pity for you that I did not come to Corinth at that time.

^{24 Ref} Not that we have authority over your faith, but we are helpers of your joy: for it is faith which is your support.

^{3 Ref} Blessed `be' the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort;

^{4 Ref} who comforteth us in all our affliction, that we may be able to comfort them that are in any affliction, through the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God.

^{5 Ref} For as the sufferings of Christ abound unto us, even so our comfort also aboundeth through Christ.

^{6 Ref} But whether we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; or whether we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which worketh in the patient enduring of the same sufferings which we also suffer:

^{7 Ref} and our hope for you is stedfast; knowing that, as ye are partakers of the sufferings, so also are ye of the comfort.

^{8 Ref} For we would not have you ignorant, brethren, concerning our affliction which befell `us' in Asia, that we were weighed down exceedingly, beyond our power, insomuch that we despaired even of life:

^{9 Ref} yea, we ourselves have had the sentence of death within ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God who raiseth the dead:

^{10 Ref} who delivered us out of so great a death, and will deliver: on whom we have set our hope that he will also still deliver us;

^{11 Ref} ye also helping together on our behalf by your supplication; that, for the gift bestowed upon us by means of many, thanks may be given by many persons on our behalf.

^{12 Ref} For our glorifying is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in holiness and sincerity of God, not in fleshly wisdom but in the grace of God, we behaved ourselves in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.

^{13 Ref} For we write no other things unto you, than what ye read or even acknowledge, and I hope ye will acknowledge unto the end:

^{14 Ref} as also ye did acknowledge us in part, that we are your glorying, even as ye also are ours, in the day of our Lord Jesus.

^{15 Ref} And in this confidence I was minded to come first unto you, that ye might have a second benefit;

^{16 Ref} and by you to pass into Macedonia, and again from Macedonia to come unto you, and of you to be set forward on my journey unto Judaea.

^{17 Ref} When I therefore was thus minded, did I show fickleness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be the yea yea and the nay nay?

^{18 Ref} But as God is faithful, our word toward you is not yea and nay.

^{19 Ref} For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, `even' by me and Silvanus and Timothy, was not yea and nay, but in him is yea.

^{20 Ref} For how many soever be the promises of God, in him is the yea: wherefore also through him is the Amen, unto the glory of God through us.

^{21 Ref} Now he that establisheth us with you in Christ, and anointed us, is God;

^{22 Ref} who also sealed us, and gave `us' the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

^{23 Ref} But I call God for a witness upon my soul, that to spare you I forbare to come unto Corinth.

^{24 Ref} Not that we have lordship over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for in faith ye stand fast.

^{8 Ref} For we would not, brethren, have you ignorant of our trouble which came to us in Asia, that we were pressed out of measure, above strength, insomuch that we despaired even of life:

^{9 Ref} But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:

^{10 Ref} Who delivered us from so great a death, and doth deliver: in whom we trust that he will yet deliver us;

^{11 Ref} Ye also helping together by prayer for us, that for the gift bestowed upon us by the means of many persons thanks may be given by many on our behalf.

^{12 Ref} For our rejoicing is this, the testimony of our conscience, that in simplicity and godly sincerity, not with fleshly wisdom, but by the grace of God, we have had our conversation in the world, and more abundantly to you-ward.

^{13 Ref} For we write none other things unto you, than what ye read or acknowledge; and I trust ye shall acknowledge even to the end;

^{14 Ref} As also ye have acknowledged us in part, that we are your rejoicing, even as ye also are our's in the day of the Lord Jesus.

^{15 Ref} And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you before, that ye might have a second benefit;

^{16 Ref} And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judaea.

^{17 Ref} When I therefore was thus minded, did I use lightness? or the things that I purpose, do I purpose according to the flesh, that with me there should be yea yea, and nay nay?

^{18 Ref} But as God is true, our word toward you was not yea and nay.

^{19 Ref} For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea.

^{20 Ref} For all the promises of God in him are yea, and in him Amen, unto the glory of God by us.

^{21 Ref} Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;

^{22 Ref} Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.

^{23 Ref} Moreover I call God for a record upon my soul, that to spare you I came not as yet unto Corinth.

^{24 Ref} Not for that we have dominion over your faith, but are helpers of your joy: for by faith ye stand.
