1 Corinthians 11
Bible in Basic English (BBE)
1 Ref So take me for your example, even as I take Christ for mine.
2 Ref Now I am pleased to see that you keep me in memory in all things, and that you give attention to the teaching which was handed down from me to you.
3 Ref But it is important for you to keep this fact in mind, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man, and the head of Christ is God.
4 Ref Every man who takes part in prayer, or gives teaching as a prophet, with his head covered, puts shame on his head.
5 Ref But every woman who does so with her head unveiled, puts shame on her head: for it is the same as if her hair was cut off.
6 Ref For if a woman is not veiled, let her hair be cut off; but if it is a shame to a woman to have her hair cut off, let her be veiled.
7 Ref For it is not right for a man to have his head covered, because he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.
8 Ref For the man did not come from the woman, but the woman from the man.
9 Ref And the man was not made for the woman, but the woman for the man.
10 Ref For this reason it is right for the woman to have a sign of authority on her head, because of the angels.
11 Ref But the woman is not separate from the man, and the man is not separate from the woman in the Lord.
12 Ref For as the woman is from the man, so the man is through the woman; but all things are from God.
13 Ref Be judges yourselves of the question: does it seem right for a woman to take part in prayer unveiled?
14 Ref Does it not seem natural to you that if a man has long hair, it is a cause of shame to him?
15 But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given to her for a covering.
16 Ref But if any man will not be ruled in this question, this is not our way of doing things, and it is not done in the churches of God.
17 Ref But in giving you this order, there is one thing about which I am not pleased: it is that when you come together it is not for the better but for the worse.
18 Ref For first of all, it has come to my ears that when you come together in the church, there are divisions among you, and I take the statement to be true in part.
19 Ref For divisions are necessary among you, in order that those who have God's approval may be clearly seen among you.
20 But now, when you come together, it is not possible to take the holy meal of the Lord:
21 Ref For when you take your food, everyone takes his meal before the other; and one has not enough food, and another is the worse for drink.
22 Ref What? have you not houses to take your meals in? or have you no respect for the church of God, putting the poor to shame? What am I to say to you? am I to give you praise? certainly not.
23 Ref For it was handed down to me from the Lord, as I gave it to you, that the Lord Jesus, on the night when Judas was false to him, took bread,
24 Ref And when it had been broken with an act of praise, he said, This is my body which is for you: do this in memory of me.
25 Ref In the same way, with the cup, after the meal, he said, This cup is the new testament in my blood: do this, whenever you take it, in memory of me.
26 Ref For whenever you take the bread and the cup you give witness to the Lord's death till he comes.
27 Ref If, then, anyone takes the bread or the cup of the Lord in the wrong spirit, he will be responsible for the body and blood of the Lord.
28 Ref But let no man take of the bread and the cup without testing himself.
29 Ref For a man puts himself in danger, if he takes part in the holy meal without being conscious that it is the Lord's body.
30 Ref For this cause a number of you are feeble and ill, and a number are dead.
31 Ref But if we were true judges of ourselves, punishment would not come on us.
32 Ref But if punishment does come, it is sent by the Lord, so that we may be safe when the world is judged.
33 So then, my brothers, when you come together to the holy meal of the Lord, let there be waiting for one another.
34 Ref If any man is in need of food, let him take his meal in his house; so that you may not come together to your damage. And the rest I will put in order when I come.
Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
1 Ref Followers of me become ye, as I also `am' of Christ.
2 Ref And I praise you, brethren, that in all things ye remember me, and according as I did deliver to you, the deliverances ye keep,
3 Ref and I wish you to know that of every man the head is the Christ, and the head of a woman is the husband, and the head of Christ is God.
4 Ref Every man praying or prophesying, having the head covered, doth dishonour his head,
5 Ref and every woman praying or prophesying with the head uncovered, doth dishonour her own head, for it is one and the same thing with her being shaven,
6 Ref for if a woman is not covered -- then let her be shorn, and if `it is' a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven -- let her be covered;
7 Ref for a man, indeed, ought not to cover the head, being the image and glory of God, and a woman is the glory of a man,
8 Ref for a man is not of a woman, but a woman `is' of a man,
9 Ref for a man also was not created because of the woman, but a woman because of the man;
10 Ref because of this the woman ought to have `a token of' authority upon the head, because of the messengers;
11 Ref but neither `is' a man apart from a woman, nor a woman apart from a man, in the Lord,
12 Ref for as the woman `is' of the man, so also the man `is' through the woman, and the all things `are' of God.
13 Ref In your own selves judge ye; is it seemly for a woman uncovered to pray to God?
14 Ref doth not even nature itself teach you, that if a man indeed have long hair, a dishonour it is to him?
15 and a woman, if she have long hair, a glory it is to her, because the hair instead of a covering hath been given to her;
16 Ref and if any one doth think to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the assemblies of God.
17 Ref And this declaring, I give no praise, because not for the better, but for the worse ye come together;
18 Ref for first, indeed, ye coming together in an assembly, I hear of divisions being among you, and partly I believe `it',
19 Ref for it behoveth sects also to be among you, that those approved may become manifest among you;
20 ye, then, coming together at the same place -- it is not to eat the Lord's supper;
21 Ref for each his own supper doth take before in the eating, and one is hungry, and another is drunk;
22 Ref why, have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or the assembly of God do ye despise, and shame those not having? what may I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I do not praise!
23 Ref For I -- I received from the Lord that which also I did deliver to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which he was delivered up, took bread,
24 Ref and having given thanks, he brake, and said, `Take ye, eat ye, this is my body, that for you is being broken; this do ye -- to the remembrance of me.'
25 Ref In like manner also the cup after the supping, saying, `This cup is the new covenant in my blood; this do ye, as often as ye may drink `it' -- to the remembrance of me;'
26 Ref for as often as ye may eat this bread, and this cup may drink, the death of the Lord ye do shew forth -- till he may come;
27 Ref so that whoever may eat this bread or may drink the cup of the Lord unworthily, guilty he shall be of the body and blood of the Lord:
28 Ref and let a man be proving himself, and so of the bread let him eat, and of the cup let him drink;
29 Ref for he who is eating and drinking unworthily, judgment to himself he doth eat and drink -- not discerning the body of the Lord.
30 Ref Because of this, among you many `are' weak and sickly, and sleep do many;
31 Ref for if ourselves we were discerning, we would not be being judged,
32 Ref and being judged by the Lord, we are chastened, that with the world we may not be condemned;
33 so then, my brethren, coming together to eat, for one another wait ye;
34 Ref and if any one is hungry, at home let him eat, that to judgment ye may not come together; and the rest, whenever I may come, I shall arrange.
King James Version (KJV)
1 Ref Be ye followers of me, even as I also am of Christ.
2 Ref Now I praise you, brethren, that ye remember me in all things, and keep the ordinances, as I delivered them to you.
3 Ref But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.
4 Ref Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoureth his head.
5 Ref But every woman that prayeth or prophesieth with her head uncovered dishonoureth her head: for that is even all one as if she were shaven.
6 Ref For if the woman be not covered, let her also be shorn: but if it be a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be covered.
7 Ref For a man indeed ought not to cover his head, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.
8 Ref For the man is not of the woman: but the woman of the man.
9 Ref Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man.
10 Ref For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.
11 Ref Nevertheless neither is the man without the woman, neither the woman without the man, in the Lord.
12 Ref For as the woman is of the man, even so is the man also by the woman; but all things of God.
13 Ref Judge in yourselves: is it comely that a woman pray unto God uncovered?
14 Ref Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a shame unto him?
15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.
16 Ref But if any man seem to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.
17 Ref Now in this that I declare unto you I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better, but for the worse.
18 Ref For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it.
19 Ref For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you.
20 When ye come together therefore into one place, this is not to eat the Lord's supper.
21 Ref For in eating every one taketh before other his own supper: and one is hungry, and another is drunken.
22 Ref What? have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and shame them that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I praise you not.
23 Ref For I have received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, That the Lord Jesus the same night in which he was betrayed took bread:
24 Ref And when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, Take, eat: this is my body, which is broken for you: this do in remembrance of me.
25 Ref After the same manner also he took the cup, when he had supped, saying, This cup is the new testament in my blood: this do ye, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of me.
26 Ref For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink this cup, ye do shew the Lord's death till he come.
27 Ref Wherefore whosoever shall eat this bread, and drink this cup of the Lord, unworthily, shall be guilty of the body and blood of the Lord.
28 Ref But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of that bread, and drink of that cup.
29 Ref For he that eateth and drinketh unworthily, eateth and drinketh damnation to himself, not discerning the Lord's body.
30 Ref For this cause many are weak and sickly among you, and many sleep.
31 Ref For if we would judge ourselves, we should not be judged.
32 Ref But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we should not be condemned with the world.
33 Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, tarry one for another.
34 Ref And if any man hunger, let him eat at home; that ye come not together unto condemnation. And the rest will I set in order when I come.
