^{1 Ref} The word which came to Jeremiah from the Lord, saying,

^{2 Ref} The Lord, the God of Israel, has said, Put down in a book all the words which I have said to you.

^{3 Ref} For see, the days are coming, says the Lord, when I will let the fate of my people Israel and Judah be changed, says the Lord: and I will make them come back to the land which I gave to their fathers, so that they may take it for their heritage.

⁴ And these are the words which the Lord said about Israel and about Judah.

^{5 Ref} This is what the Lord has said: A voice of shaking fear has come to our ears, of fear and not of peace.

^{6 Ref} Put the question and see if it is possible for a man to have birth-pains: why do I see every man with his hands gripping his sides, as a woman does when the pains of birth are on her, and all faces are turned green?

^{7 Ref} Ha! for that day is so great that there is no day like it: it is the time of Jacob's trouble: but he will get salvation from it.

^{8 Ref} For it will come about on that day, says the Lord of armies, that his yoke will be broken off his neck, and his bands will be burst; and men of strange lands will no longer make use of him as their servant:

^{9 Ref} But they will be servants to the Lord their God and to David their king, whom I will give back to them.

^{10 Ref} So have no fear, O Jacob, my servant, says the Lord; and do not be troubled, O Israel: for see, I will make you come back from far away, and your seed from the land where they are prisoners; and Jacob will come back, and will be quiet and at peace, and no one will give him cause for fear.

^{11 Ref} For I am with you, says the Lord, to be your saviour: for I will put an end to all the nations where I have sent you wandering, but I will not put an end to you completely: though with wise purpose I will put right your errors, and will not let you go quite without punishment.

^{12 Ref} For the Lord has said, Your disease may not be made well and your wound is bitter.

^{13 Ref} There is no help for your wound, there is nothing to make you well.

^{14 Ref} Your lovers have no more thought for you, they go after you no longer; for I have given you the wound of a hater, even cruel punishment;

^{15 Ref} Why are you crying for help because of your wound? for your pain may never be taken away: because your evil-doing was so great and because your sins were increased, I have done these things to you.

^{16 Ref} For this cause, all those who take you for their food will themselves become your food; and all your attackers, every one of them, will be taken prisoners; and those who send destruction on you will come to destruction; and all those who take away your goods by force will undergo the same themselves.

^{17 Ref} For I will make you healthy again and I will make you well from your wounds, says the Lord; because they have given you the name of an outlaw, saying, It is Zion cared for by no man.

^{18 Ref} The Lord has said, See, I am changing the fate of the tents of Jacob, and I will have pity on his houses; the town will be put up on its hill, and the great houses will be living-places again.

^{19 Ref} And from them will go out praise and the sound of laughing: and I will make them great in number, and they will not become less; and I will give them glory, and they will not be small.

^{20 Ref} And their children will be as they were in the old days, and the meeting of the people will have its place before me, and I will send punishment on all who are cruel to them.

^{21 Ref} And their chief will be of their number; their ruler will come from among themselves; and I will let him be present before me, so that he may come near to me: for who may have strength of heart to come near me? says the Lord.

^{22 Ref} And you will be my people, and I will be your God.

^{23 Ref} See, the storm-wind of the Lord, even the heat of his wrath, has gone out, a rolling storm, bursting on the heads of the evil-doers.

^{24 Ref} The wrath of the Lord will not be turned back till he has done, till he has put into effect, the purposes of his heart: in days to come you will have full knowledge of this.

^{1 Ref} The word that hath been unto Jeremiah from Jehovah, saying,

^{2 Ref} `Thus spake Jehovah, God of Israel, saying, Write for thee all the words that I have spoken unto thee on a book.

^{3 Ref} For, lo, days are coming -- an affirmation of Jehovah -- and I have turned back `to' the captivity of My people Israel and Judah, said Jehovah, and I have caused them to turn back unto the land that I gave to their fathers, and they do possess it.'

⁴ And these `are' the words that Jehovah hath spoken concerning Israel and concerning Judah:

^{5 Ref} Surely thus said Jehovah: A voice of trembling we have heard, Fear -- and there is no peace.

^{6 Ref} Ask, I pray you, and see, is a male bringing forth? Wherefore have I seen every man, His hands on his loins, as a travailing woman, And all faces have been turned to paleness?

^{7 Ref} Wo! for great `is' that day, without any like it, Yea, a time of adversity it `is' to Jacob, Yet out of it he is saved.

^{8 Ref} And it hath come to pass, in that day, An affirmation of Jehovah of Hosts, I break his yoke from off thy neck, And thy bands I draw away, And lay no more service on him do strangers.

^{9 Ref} And they have served Jehovah their God, And David their king whom I raise up to them.

^{10 Ref} And thou, be not afraid, My servant Jacob, An affirmation of Jehovah, Nor be affrighted, O Israel, For, lo, I am saving thee from afar, And thy seed from the land of their captivity, And Jacob hath turned back and rested, And is quiet, and there is none troubling.

^{11 Ref} For with thee `am' I, An affirmation of Jehovah -- to save thee, For I make an end of all the nations Whither I have scattered thee, Only, of thee I do not make an end, And I have chastised thee in judgment, And do not entirely acquit thee.

^{12 Ref} For thus said Jehovah: Incurable is thy breach, grievous thy stroke,

^{13 Ref} There is none judging thy cause to bind up, Healing medicines there are none for thee.

^{14 Ref} all loving thee have forgotten thee, Thee they do not seek, For with the stroke of an enemy I smote thee, The chastisement of a fierce one, Because of the abundance of thy iniquity, Mighty have been thy sins!

^{15 Ref} What! -- thou criest concerning thy breach! Incurable `is' thy pain, Because of the abundance of thy iniquity, Mighty have been thy sins! I have done these to thee.

^{16 Ref} Therefore all consuming thee are consumed, And all thine adversaries -- all of them -- Into captivity do go, And thy spoilers have been for a spoil, And all thy plunderers I give up to plunder.

^{17 Ref} For I increase health to thee, And from thy strokes I do heal thee, An affirmation of Jehovah, For `Outcast' they have called to thee, `Zion it `is', there is none seeking for her.'

^{18 Ref} Thus said Jehovah: Lo, I turn back `to' the captivity of the tents of Jacob, And his dwelling places I pity, And the city hath been built on its heap, And the palace according to its ordinance remaineth.

^{19 Ref} And gone forth from them hath thanksgiving, And the voice of playful ones, And I have multiplied them and they are not few, And made them honourable, and they are not small.

^{20 Ref} And his sons have been as aforetime, And his company before Me is established, And I have seen after all his oppressors.

^{21 Ref} And his honourable one hath been of himself, And his ruler from his midst goeth forth, And I have caused him to draw near, And he hath drawn nigh unto Me, For who `is' he who hath pledged his heart To draw nigh unto Me? An affirmation of Jehovah.

^{22 Ref} And ye have been to Me for a people, And I am to you for God.

^{23 Ref} Lo, a whirlwind of Jehovah -- Fury hath gone forth -- a cutting whirlwind, On the head of the wicked it stayeth.

^{24 Ref} The fierceness of the anger of Jehovah Doth not turn back till His doing, Yea, till His establishing the devices of His heart, In the latter end of the days we consider it!

^{3 Ref} For, lo, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will bring again the captivity of my people Israel and Judah, saith the LORD: and I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it.

⁴ And these are the words that the LORD spake concerning Israel and concerning Judah.

^{5 Ref} For thus saith the LORD; We have heard a voice of trembling, of fear, and not of peace.

^{6 Ref} Ask ye now, and see whether a man doth travail with child? wherefore do I see every man with his hands on his loins, as a woman in travail, and all faces are turned into paleness?

^{7 Ref} Alas! for that day is great, so that none is like it: it is even the time of Jacob's trouble, but he shall be saved out of it.

^{8 Ref} For it shall come to pass in that day, saith the LORD of hosts, that I will break his yoke from off thy neck, and will burst thy bonds, and strangers shall no more serve themselves of him:

^{9 Ref} But they shall serve the LORD their God, and David their king, whom I will raise up unto them.

^{10 Ref} Therefore fear thou not, O my servant Jacob, saith the LORD; neither be dismayed, O Israel: for, lo, I will save thee from afar, and thy seed from the land of their captivity; and Jacob shall return, and shall be in rest, and be quiet, and none shall make him afraid.

^{11 Ref} For I am with thee, saith the LORD, to save thee: though I make a full end of all nations whither I have scattered thee, yet I will not make a full end of thee: but I will correct thee in measure, and will not leave thee altogether unpunished.

^{12 Ref} For thus saith the LORD, Thy bruise is incurable, and thy wound is grievous.

^{13 Ref} There is none to plead thy cause, that thou mayest be bound up: thou hast no healing medicines.

^{14 Ref} All thy lovers have forgotten thee; they seek thee not; for I have wounded thee with the wound of an enemy, with the chastisement of a cruel one, for the multitude of thine iniquity; because thy sins were increased.

^{15 Ref} Why criest thou for thine affliction? thy sorrow is incurable for the multitude of thine iniquity: because thy sins were increased, I have done these things unto thee.

^{16 Ref} Therefore all they that devour thee shall be devoured; and all thine adversaries, every one of them, shall go into captivity; and they that spoil thee shall be a spoil, and all that prey upon thee will I give for a prey.

^{17 Ref} For I will restore health unto thee, and I will heal thee of thy wounds, saith the LORD; because they called thee an Outcast, saying, This is Zion, whom no man seeketh after.

^{18 Ref} Thus saith the LORD; Behold, I will bring again the captivity of Jacob's tents, and have mercy on his dwellingplaces; and the city shall be builded upon her own heap, and the palace shall remain after the manner thereof.

^{19 Ref} And out of them shall proceed thanksgiving and the voice of them that make merry: and I will multiply them, and they shall not be few; I will also glorify them, and they shall not be small.

^{20 Ref} Their children also shall be as aforetime, and their congregation shall be established before me, and I will punish all that oppress them.

^{21 Ref} And their nobles shall be of themselves, and their governor shall proceed from the midst of them; and I will cause him to draw near, and he shall approach unto me: for who is this that engaged his heart to approach unto me? saith the LORD.

^{22 Ref} And ye shall be my people, and I will be your God.

^{23 Ref} Behold, the whirlwind of the LORD goeth forth with fury, a continuing whirlwind: it shall fall with pain upon the head of the wicked.

^{24 Ref} The fierce anger of the LORD shall not return, until he hath done it, and until he have performed the intents of his heart: in the latter days ye shall consider it.
