John 8

Bible in Basic English (BBE)

1 Ref But Jesus went to the Mountain of Olives.

2 Ref And early in the morning he came again into the Temple and all the people came to him and he was seated teaching them.

3 Now the scribes and Pharisees came, with a woman who had been taken in the act of sinning against the married relation;

4 And putting her forward, they said to him, Master, this woman has been taken in the very act of sinning against the married relation.

5 Ref Now in the law Moses gave directions that such women were to be stoned; what do you say about it?

6 Ref They said this, testing him, so that they might have something against him. But Jesus, with his head bent down, made letters on the floor with his finger.

7 Ref But when they went on with their questions, he got up and said to them, Let him among you who is without sin be the first to send a stone at her.

8 And again, with bent head, he made letters on the floor.

9 Ref And when his words came to their ears, they went out one by one, starting with the oldest even to the last, because they were conscious of what was in their hearts: and Jesus was there by himself with the woman before him.

10 Ref Then Jesus got up, and seeing nobody but the woman, he said to her, Where are the men who said things against you? did no one give a decision against you?

11 Ref And she said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said, And I do not give a decision against you: go, and never do wrong again.]

12 Ref Then again Jesus said to them, I am the light of the world; he who comes with me will not be walking in the dark but will have the light of life.

13 Ref So the Pharisees said to him, The witness you give is about yourself: your witness is not true.

14 Ref Jesus said in answer, Even if I give witness about myself, my witness is true, because I have knowledge of where I came from and where I am going; but you have no knowledge of where I come from or of where I am going.

15 Ref You are judging from what you see; I am judging no man.

16 Ref Even if I am judging, my decision is right, because I am not by myself--with me is the Father who sent me.

17 Ref Even in your law it is said that the witness of two men is true.

18 Ref I give witness about myself and the Father who sent me gives witness about me.

19 Ref Then they said to him, Where is your Father? Jesus said in answer, You have no knowledge of me or of my Father: if you had knowledge of me you would have knowledge of my Father.

20 Ref Jesus said these words in the place where the offerings were stored, while he was teaching in the Temple: but no man took him because his time was still to come.

21 Ref Then he said to them again, I am going away and you will be looking for me, but death will overtake you in your sins. It is not possible for you to come where I am going.

22 Ref So the Jews said, Will he take his life? Is that why he says, Where I go it is not possible for you to come?

23 Ref And he said to them, You are of the earth; I am from heaven: you are of this world; I am not of this world.

24 Ref For this reason I said to you that death will overtake you in your sins: for if you have not faith that I am he, death will come to you while you are in your sins.

25 Ref Then they said to him, Who are you? Jesus said, What I said to you from the first.

26 Ref I have much to say about you and against you: but he who sent me is true and what he has said to me I say to the world.

27 Ref They did not see that his words were about the Father.

28 Ref So Jesus said, When the Son of man has been lifted up by you, then it will be clear to you who I am, and that I do nothing of myself, but say as the Father gave me teaching.

29 Ref He who sent me is with me; he has not gone from me, because at all times I do the things which are pleasing to him.

30 Ref When he said this a number came to have faith in him.

31 Ref Then Jesus said to the Jews who had faith in him, If you keep my word, then you are truly my disciples;

32 Ref And you will have knowledge of what is true, and that will make you free.

33 Ref They said to him in answer, We are Abraham's seed and have never been any man's servant: why do you say, You will become free?

34 Ref And this was the answer Jesus gave them: Truly I say to you, Everyone who does evil is the servant of sin.

35 Ref Now the servant does not go on living in the house for ever, but the son does.

36 Ref If then the son makes you free, you will be truly free.

37 Ref I am conscious that you are Abraham's seed; but you have a desire to put me to death because my word has no place in you.

38 Ref I say the things which I have seen in my Father's house: and you do the things which come to you from your father's house.

39 Ref In answer they said to him, Our father is Abraham. Jesus said to them, If you were Abraham's children you would do what Abraham did.

40 Ref But now you have a desire to put me to death, a man who has said to you what is true, as I had it from God: Abraham did not do that.

41 Ref You are doing the works of your father. They said to him, We are true sons of Abraham; we have one Father, who is God.

42 Ref Jesus said to them, If God was your Father you would have love for me, because it was from God I came and am here. I did not come of myself, but he sent me.

43 Ref Why are my words not clear to you? It is because your ears are shut to my teaching.

44 Ref You are the children of your father the Evil One and it is your pleasure to do his desires. From the first he was a taker of life; and he did not go in the true way because there is no true thing in him. When he says what is false, it is natural to him, for he is false and the father of what is false.

45 Ref But because I say what is true, you have no belief in me.

46 Ref Which of you is able truly to say that I am a sinner? If I say what is true, why have you no belief in me?

47 Ref He who is a child of God gives ear to the words of God: your ears are not open to them because you are not from God.

48 Ref The Jews said to him in answer, Are we not right in saying that you are of Samaria and have an evil spirit?

49 Ref And this was the answer of Jesus: I have not an evil spirit; but I give honour to my Father and you do not give honour to me.

50 Ref I, however, am not in search of glory for myself: there is One who is searching for it and he is judge.

51 Ref Truly I say to you, If a man keeps my word he will never see death.

52 Ref The Jews said to him, Now we are certain that you have an evil spirit. Abraham is dead, and the prophets are dead; and you say, If a man keeps my word he will never see death.

53 Ref Are you greater than our father Abraham, who is dead? and the prophets are dead: who do you say that you are?

54 Ref Jesus said in answer, If I take glory for myself, my glory is nothing: it is my Father who gives me glory, of whom you say that he is your God.

55 Ref You have no knowledge of him, but I have knowledge of him; and if I said I have no knowledge of him I would be talking falsely like you: but I have full knowledge of him, and I keep his word.

56 Ref Your father Abraham was full of joy at the hope of seeing my day: he saw it and was glad.

57 Then the Jews said to him, You are not fifty years old; have you seen Abraham?

58 Ref Jesus said to them, Truly I say to you, Before Abraham came into being, I am.

59 Ref So they took up stones to send at him: but Jesus got secretly out of their way and went out of the Temple.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Ref And at dawn he came again to the temple,

2 Ref and all the people were coming unto him, and having sat down, he was teaching them;

3 and the scribes and the Pharisees bring unto him a woman having been taken in adultery, and having set her in the midst,

4 they say to him, `Teacher, this woman was taken in the very crime -- committing adultery,

5 Ref and in the law, Moses did command us that such be stoned; thou, therefore, what dost thou say?'

6 Ref and this they said, trying him, that they might have to accuse him. And Jesus, having stooped down, with the finger he was writing on the ground,

7 Ref and when they continued asking him, having bent himself back, he said unto them, `The sinless of you -- let him first cast the stone at her;'

8 and again having stooped down, he was writing on the ground,

9 Ref and they having heard, and by the conscience being convicted, were going forth one by one, having begun from the elders -- unto the last; and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

10 Ref And Jesus having bent himself back, and having seen no one but the woman, said to her, `Woman, where are those -- thine accusers? did no one pass sentence upon thee?'

11 Ref and she said, `No one, Sir;' and Jesus said to her, `Neither do I pass sentence on thee; be going on, and no more sin.'

12 Ref Again, therefore, Jesus spake to them, saying, `I am the light of the world; he who is following me shall not walk in the darkness, but he shall have the light of the life.'

13 Ref The Pharisees, therefore, said to him, `Thou of thyself dost testify, thy testimony is not true;'

14 Ref Jesus answered and said to them, `And if I testify of myself -- my testimony is true, because I have known whence I came, and whither I go, and ye -- ye have not known whence I come, or whither I go.

15 Ref `Ye according to the flesh do judge; I do not judge any one,

16 Ref and even if I do judge my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent me;

17 Ref and also in your law it hath been written, that the testimony of two men are true;

18 Ref I am `one' who is testifying of myself, and the Father who sent me doth testify of me.'

19 Ref They said, therefore, to him, `Where is thy father?' Jesus answered, `Ye have neither known me nor my Father: if me ye had known, my Father also ye had known.'

20 Ref These sayings spake Jesus in the treasury, teaching in the temple, and no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come;

21 Ref therefore said Jesus again to them, `I go away, and ye will seek me, and in your sin ye shall die; whither I go away, ye are not able to come.'

22 Ref The Jews, therefore, said, `Will he kill himself, because he saith, Whither I go away, ye are not able to come?'

23 Ref and he said to them, `Ye are from beneath, I am from above; ye are of this world, I am not of this world;

24 Ref I said, therefore, to you, that ye shall die in your sins, for if ye may not believe that I am `he', ye shall die in your sins.'

25 Ref They said, therefore, to him, `Thou -- who art thou?' and Jesus said to them, `Even what I did speak of to you at the beginning;

26 Ref many things I have to speak concerning you and to judge, but He who sent me is true, and I -- what things I heard from Him -- these I say to the world.'

27 Ref They knew not that of the Father he spake to them;

28 Ref Jesus, therefore, said to them, `When ye may lift up the Son of Man then ye will know that I am `he'; and of myself I do nothing, but according as my Father did teach me, these things I speak;

29 Ref and He who sent me is with me; the Father did not leave me alone, because I, the things pleasing to Him, do always.'

30 Ref As he is speaking these things, many believed in him;

31 Ref Jesus, therefore, said unto the Jews who believed in him, `If ye may remain in my word, truly my disciples ye are, and ye shall know the truth,

32 Ref and the truth shall make you free.'

33 Ref They answered him, `Seed of Abraham we are; and to no one have we been servants at any time; how dost thou say -- Ye shall become free?'

34 Ref Jesus answered them, `Verily, verily, I say to you -- Every one who is committing sin, is a servant of the sin,

35 Ref and the servant doth not remain in the house -- to the age, the son doth remain -- to the age;

36 Ref if then the son may make you free, in reality ye shall be free.

37 Ref `I have known that ye are seed of Abraham, but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you;

38 Ref I -- that which I have seen with my Father do speak, and ye, therefore, that which ye have seen with your father -- ye do.'

39 Ref They answered and said to him, `Our father is Abraham;' Jesus saith to them, `If children of Abraham ye were, the works of Abraham ye were doing;

40 Ref and now, ye seek to kill me -- a man who hath spoken to you the truth I heard from God; this Abraham did not;

41 Ref ye do the works of your father.' They said, therefore, to him, `We of whoredom have not been born; one Father we have -- God;'

42 Ref Jesus then said to them, `If God were your father, ye were loving me, for I came forth from God, and am come; for neither have I come of myself, but He sent me;

43 Ref wherefore do ye not know my speech? because ye are not able to hear my word.

44 Ref `Ye are of a father -- the devil, and the desires of your father ye will to do; he was a man-slayer from the beginning, and in the truth he hath not stood, because there is no truth in him; when one may speak the falsehood, of his own he speaketh, because he is a liar -- also his father.

45 Ref `And because I say the truth, ye do not believe me.

46 Ref Who of you doth convict me of sin? and if I speak truth, wherefore do ye not believe me?

47 Ref he who is of God, the sayings of God he doth hear; because of this ye do not hear, because of God ye are not.'

48 Ref The Jews, therefore, answered and said to him, `Do we not say well, that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?'

49 Ref Jesus answered, `I have not a demon, but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me;

50 Ref and I do not seek my own glory; there is who is seeking and is judging;

51 Ref verily, verily, I say to you, If any one may keep my word, death he may not see -- to the age.'

52 Ref The Jews, therefore, said to him, `Now we have known that thou hast a demon; Abraham did die, and the prophets, and thou dost say, If any one may keep my word, he shall not taste of death -- to the age!

53 Ref Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died; whom dost thou make thyself?'

54 Ref Jesus answered, `If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father who is glorifying me, of whom ye say that He is your God;

55 Ref and ye have not known Him, and I have known Him, and if I say that I have not known Him, I shall be like you -- speaking falsely; but I have known Him, and His word I keep;

56 Ref Abraham, your father, was glad that he might see my day; and he saw, and did rejoice.'

57 The Jews, therefore, said unto him, `Thou art not yet fifty years old, and Abraham hast thou seen?'

58 Ref Jesus said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, Before Abraham's coming -- I am;'

59 Ref they took up, therefore, stones that they may cast at him, but Jesus hid himself, and went forth out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

2 Ref Now very early in the morning, he came again into the temple, and all the people came to him. He sat down, and taught them.

3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman taken in adultery. Having set her in the midst,

4 they told him, "Teacher, we found this woman in adultery, in the very act.

5 Ref Now in our law, Moses commanded us to stone such. What then do you say about her?"

7 Ref But when they continued asking him, he looked up and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her."

8 Again he stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.

9 Ref They, when they heard it, being convicted by their conscience, went out one by one, beginning from the oldest, even to the last. Jesus was left alone with the woman where she was, in the middle.

10 Ref Jesus, standing up, saw her and said, "Woman, where are your accusers? Did no one condemn you?"

11 Ref She said, "No one, Lord." Jesus said, "Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, sin no more."

12 Ref Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life."

13 Ref The Pharisees therefore said to him, "You testify about yourself. Your testimony is not valid."

14 Ref Jesus answered them, "Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from, and where I am going; but you don't know where I came from, or where I am going.

15 Ref You judge according to the flesh. I judge no one.

16 Ref Even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent me.

17 Ref It's also written in your law that the testimony of two people is valid.

18 Ref I am one who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me."

19 Ref They said therefore to him, "Where is your Father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither me, nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also."

20 Ref Jesus spoke these words in the treasury, as he taught in the temple. Yet no one arrested him, because his hour had not yet come.

21 Ref Jesus said therefore again to them, "I am going away, and you will seek me, and you will die in your sins. Where I go, you can't come."

22 Ref The Jews therefore said, "Will he kill himself, that he says, 'Where I am going, you can't come?'"

23 Ref He said to them, "You are from beneath. I am from above. You are of this world. I am not of this world.

24 Ref I said therefore to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins."

25 Ref They said therefore to him, "Who are you?" Jesus said to them, "Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning.

26 Ref I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you. However he who sent me is true; and the things which I heard from him, these I say to the world."

27 Ref They didn't understand that he spoke to them about the Father.

28 Ref Jesus therefore said to them, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and I do nothing of myself, but as my Father taught me, I say these things.

29 Ref He who sent me is with me. The Father hasn't left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him."

30 Ref As he spoke these things, many believed in him.

31 Ref Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him, "If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples.

32 Ref You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."

33 Ref They answered him, "We are Abraham's seed, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How do you say, 'You will be made free?'"

34 Ref Jesus answered them, "Most assuredly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is the bondservant of sin.

35 Ref A bondservant doesn't live in the house forever. A son remains forever.

36 Ref If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

37 Ref I know that you are Abraham's seed, yet you seek to kill me, because my word finds no place in you.

38 Ref I say the things which I have seen with my Father; and you also do the things which you have seen with your father."

39 Ref They answered him, "Our father is Abraham." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham.

40 Ref But now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God. Abraham didn't do this.

41 Ref You do the works of your father." They said to him, "We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father, God."

42 Ref Therefore Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came out and have come from God. For I haven't come of myself, but he sent me.

43 Ref Why don't you understand my speech? Because you can't hear my word.

44 Ref You are of your Father, the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and doesn't stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks on his own; for he is a liar, and the father of it.

45 Ref But because I tell the truth, you don't believe me.

46 Ref Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me?

47 Ref He who is of God hears the words of God. For this cause you don't hear, because you are not of God."

48 Ref Then the Jews answered him, "Don't we say well that you are a Samaritan, and have a demon?"

49 Ref Jesus answered, "I don't have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me.

50 Ref But I don't seek my own glory. There is one who seeks and judges.

51 Ref Most assuredly, I tell you, if a person keeps my word, he will never see death."

52 Ref Then the Jews said to him, "Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets; and you say, 'If a man keeps my word, he will never taste of death.'

53 Ref Are you greater than our father, Abraham, who died? The prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?"

54 Ref Jesus answered, "If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say that he is our God.

55 Ref You have not known him, but I know him. If I said, 'I don't know him,' I would be like you, a liar. But I know him, and keep his word.

56 Ref Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day. He saw it, and was glad."

57 The Jews therefore said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?"

58 Ref Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I tell you, before Abraham came into existence, I AM."

59 Ref Therefore they took up stones to throw at him, but Jesus was hidden, and went out of the temple, having gone through the midst of them, and so passed by.
