Romans 14

Bible in Basic English (BBE)

1 Ref Do not put on one side him who is feeble in faith, and do not put him in doubt by your reasonings.

2 Ref One man has faith to take all things as food: another who is feeble in faith takes only green food.

3 Ref Let not him who takes food have a low opinion of him who does not: and let not him who does not take food be a judge of him who does; for he has God's approval.

4 Ref Who are you to make yourself a judge of another man's servant? it is to his master that he is responsible for good or bad. Yes, his place will be safe, because the Lord is able to keep him from falling.

5 Ref This man puts one day before another: to that man they are the same. Let every man be certain in his mind.

6 Ref He who keeps the day, keeps it to the Lord; and he who takes food, takes it as to the Lord, for he gives praise to God; and he who does not take food, to the Lord he takes it not, and gives praise to God.

7 Ref For every man's life and every man's death has a relation to others as well as to himself.

8 Ref As long as we have life we are living to the Lord; or if we give up our life it is to the Lord; so if we are living, or if our life comes to an end, we are the Lord's.

9 Ref And for this purpose Christ went into death and came back again, that he might be the Lord of the dead and of the living.

10 Ref But you, why do you make yourself your brother's judge? or again, why have you no respect for your brother? because we will all have to take our place before God as our judge.

11 Ref For it is said in the holy Writings, By my life, says the Lord, to me every knee will be bent, and every tongue will give worship to God.

12 Ref So every one of us will have to give an account of himself to God.

13 Ref Then let us not be judges of one another any longer: but keep this in mind, that no man is to make it hard for his brother, or give him cause for doubting.

14 Ref I am conscious of this, and am certain in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean in itself; but for the man in whose opinion it is unclean, for him it is unclean.

15 Ref And if because of food your brother is troubled, then you are no longer going on in the way of love. Do not let your food be destruction to him for whom Christ went into death.

16 Ref Let it not be possible for men to say evil about your good:

17 Ref For the kingdom of God is not food and drink, but righteousness and peace and joy in the Holy Spirit.

18 Ref And he who in these things is Christ's servant, is pleasing to God and has the approval of men.

19 Ref So then, let us go after the things which make peace, and the things by which we may be a help to one another.

20 Ref Do not let the work of God come to nothing on account of food. All things are certainly clean; but it is evil for that man who by taking food makes it hard for another.

21 Ref It is better not to take meat or wine or to do anything which might be a cause of trouble to your brother.

22 Ref The faith which you have, have it to yourself before God. Happy is the man who is not judged by that to which he gives approval.

23 Ref But he who is in doubt is judged if he takes food, because he does it not in faith; and whatever is not of faith is sin.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Ref And him who is weak in the faith receive ye -- not to determinations of reasonings;

2 Ref one doth believe that he may eat all things -- and he who is weak doth eat herbs;

3 Ref let not him who is eating despise him who is not eating: and let not him who is not eating judge him who is eating, for God did receive him.

4 Ref Thou -- who art thou that art judging another's domestic? to his own master he doth stand or fall; and he shall be made to stand, for God is able to make him stand.

5 Ref One doth judge one day above another, and another doth judge every day `alike'; let each in his own mind be fully assured.

6 Ref He who is regarding the day, to the Lord he doth regard `it', and he who is not regarding the day, to the Lord he doth not regard `it'. He who is eating, to the Lord he doth eat, for he doth give thanks to God; and he who is not eating, to the Lord he doth not eat, and doth give thanks to God.

7 Ref For none of us to himself doth live, and none to himself doth die;

8 Ref for both, if we may live, to the Lord we live; if also we may die, to the Lord we die; both then if we may live, also if we may die, we are the Lord's;

9 Ref for because of this Christ both died and rose again, and lived again, that both of dead and of living he may be Lord.

10 Ref And thou, why dost thou judge thy brother? or again, thou, why dost thou set at nought thy brother? for we shall all stand at the tribunal of the Christ;

11 Ref for it hath been written, `I live! saith the Lord -- to Me bow shall every knee, and every tongue shall confess to God;'

12 Ref so, then, each of us concerning himself shall give reckoning to God;

13 Ref no longer, therefore, may we judge one another, but this judge ye rather, not to put a stumbling-stone before the brother, or an offence.

14 Ref I have known, and am persuaded, in the Lord Jesus, that nothing `is' unclean of itself, except to him who is reckoning anything to be unclean -- to that one `it is' unclean;

15 Ref and if through victuals thy brother is grieved, no more dost thou walk according to love; do not with thy victuals destroy that one for whom Christ died.

16 Ref Let not, then, your good be evil spoken of,

17 Ref for the reign of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness, and peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit;

18 Ref for he who in these things is serving the Christ, `is' acceptable to God and approved of men.

19 Ref So, then, the things of peace may we pursue, and the things of building up one another;

20 Ref for the sake of victuals cast not down the work of God; all things, indeed, `are' pure, but evil `is' to the man who is eating through stumbling.

21 Ref Right `it is' not to eat flesh, nor to drink wine, nor to `do anything' in which thy brother doth stumble, or is made to fall, or is weak.

22 Ref Thou hast faith! to thyself have `it' before God; happy is he who is not judging himself in what he doth approve,

23 Ref and he who is making a difference, if he may eat, hath been condemned, because `it is' not of faith; and all that `is' not of faith is sin.

World English Bible (WEB)

1 Ref Now receive one who is weak in faith, but not for disputes over opinions.

2 Ref One man has faith to eat all things, but he who is weak eats only vegetables.

3 Ref Don't let him who eats despise him who doesn't eat. Don't let him who doesn't eat judge him who eats, for God has received him.

4 Ref Who are you who judge another's servant? To his own lord he stands or falls. Yes, he will be made to stand, for God has power to make him stand.

5 Ref One man esteems one day as more important. Another esteems every day alike. Let each man be fully assured in his own mind.

6 Ref He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord; and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it. He who eats, eats to the Lord, for he gives God thanks. He who doesn't eat, to the Lord he doesn't eat, and gives God thanks.

7 Ref For none of us lives to himself, and none dies to himself.

8 Ref For if we live, we live to the Lord. Or if we die, we die to the Lord. If therefore we live or die, we are the Lord's.

9 Ref For to this end Christ died, rose, and lived again, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

10 Ref But you, why do you judge your brother? Or you again, why do you despise your brother? For we will all stand before the judgment seat of Christ.

11 Ref For it is written, "'As I live,' says the Lord, 'to me every knee will bow. Every tongue will confess to God.'"

12 Ref So then each one of us will give account of himself to God.

13 Ref Therefore let's not judge one another any more, but judge this rather, that no man put a stumbling block in his brother's way, or an occasion for falling.

14 Ref I know, and am persuaded in the Lord Jesus, that nothing is unclean of itself; except that to him who considers anything to be unclean, to him it is unclean.

15 Ref Yet if because of food your brother is grieved, you walk no longer in love. Don't destroy with your food him for whom Christ died.

16 Ref Then don't let your good be slandered,

17 Ref for the Kingdom of God is not eating and drinking, but righteousness, peace, and joy in the Holy Spirit.

18 Ref For he who serves Christ in these things is acceptable to God and approved by men.

19 Ref So then, let us follow after things which make for peace, and things by which we may build one another up.

20 Ref Don't overthrow God's work for food's sake. All things indeed are clean, however it is evil for that man who creates a stumbling block by eating.

21 Ref It is good to not eat meat, drink wine, nor do anything by which your brother stumbles, is offended, or is made weak.

22 Ref Do you have faith? Have it to yourself before God. Happy is he who doesn't judge himself in that which he approves.

23 Ref But he who doubts is condemned if he eats, because it isn't of faith; and whatever is not of faith is sin. (14:24) Now to him who is able to establish you according to my Gospel and the preaching of Jesus Christ, according to the revelation of the mystery which has been kept secret through long ages, (14:25) but now is revealed, and by the Scriptures of the prophets, according to the commandment of the eternal God, is made known for obedience of faith to all the nations; (14:26) to the only wise God, through Jesus Christ, to whom be the glory forever! Amen.{TR places verses 24-26 after Romans 16:24 as verses 25-27.}
