¹⁴ Since then the children have shared in flesh and blood, he also himself in like manner partook of the same, that through death he might bring to nothing him who had the power of death, that is, the devil,

¹⁵ and might deliver all of them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

¹⁶ For most assuredly, not to angels does he give help, but he gives help to the seed of Abraham.

³ He was despised, and rejected by men; a man of suffering, and acquainted with disease: and as one from whom men hide their face he was despised; and we didn't respect him.

⁴ Surely he has borne our sickness, and carried our suffering; yet we considered him plagued, struck by God, and afflicted.

⁵ But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought our peace was on him; and by his wounds we are healed.

⁶ All we like sheep have gone astray; everyone has turned to his own way; and Yahweh has laid on him the iniquity of us all.

⁸ But God commends his own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

²¹ For to this you were called, because Christ also suffered for us, leaving you{TR reads "us" instead of "you"} an example, that you should follow his steps,

²² who did not sin, "neither was deceit found in his mouth."

²³ Who, when he was cursed, didn't curse back. When he suffered, didn't threaten, but committed himself to him who judges righteously;

²⁴ who his own self bore our sins in his body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live to righteousness; by whose stripes you were healed.

²⁵ For you were going astray like sheep; but are now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer{"Overseer" is from the Greek episkopon, which can mean overseer, curator, guardian, or superintendent.} of your souls.

⁵⁵ Now the chief priests and the whole council sought witnesses against Jesus to put him to death, and found none.

¹⁷ Therefore the Father loves me, because I lay down my life, that I may take it again.

¹⁸ No one takes it away from me, but I lay it down by myself. I have power to lay it down, and I have power to take it again. I received this commandment from my Father."

¹⁹ Therefore a division arose again among the Jews because of these words.

⁸ And being found in human form, he humbled himself, becoming obedient to death, yes, the death of the cross.

⁴⁵ For the Son of Man also came not to be served, but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many."

³⁸ Then he said to them, "My soul is exceedingly sorrowful, even to death. Stay here, and watch with me."

²¹ From that time, Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders, chief priests, and scribes, and be killed, and the third day be raised up.
