John 8

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Ref And at dawn he came again to the temple,

2 Ref and all the people were coming unto him, and having sat down, he was teaching them;

3 and the scribes and the Pharisees bring unto him a woman having been taken in adultery, and having set her in the midst,

4 they say to him, `Teacher, this woman was taken in the very crime -- committing adultery,

5 Ref and in the law, Moses did command us that such be stoned; thou, therefore, what dost thou say?'

6 Ref and this they said, trying him, that they might have to accuse him. And Jesus, having stooped down, with the finger he was writing on the ground,

7 Ref and when they continued asking him, having bent himself back, he said unto them, `The sinless of you -- let him first cast the stone at her;'

8 and again having stooped down, he was writing on the ground,

9 Ref and they having heard, and by the conscience being convicted, were going forth one by one, having begun from the elders -- unto the last; and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

10 Ref And Jesus having bent himself back, and having seen no one but the woman, said to her, `Woman, where are those -- thine accusers? did no one pass sentence upon thee?'

11 Ref and she said, `No one, Sir;' and Jesus said to her, `Neither do I pass sentence on thee; be going on, and no more sin.'

12 Ref Again, therefore, Jesus spake to them, saying, `I am the light of the world; he who is following me shall not walk in the darkness, but he shall have the light of the life.'

13 Ref The Pharisees, therefore, said to him, `Thou of thyself dost testify, thy testimony is not true;'

14 Ref Jesus answered and said to them, `And if I testify of myself -- my testimony is true, because I have known whence I came, and whither I go, and ye -- ye have not known whence I come, or whither I go.

15 Ref `Ye according to the flesh do judge; I do not judge any one,

16 Ref and even if I do judge my judgment is true, because I am not alone, but I and the Father who sent me;

17 Ref and also in your law it hath been written, that the testimony of two men are true;

18 Ref I am `one' who is testifying of myself, and the Father who sent me doth testify of me.'

19 Ref They said, therefore, to him, `Where is thy father?' Jesus answered, `Ye have neither known me nor my Father: if me ye had known, my Father also ye had known.'

20 Ref These sayings spake Jesus in the treasury, teaching in the temple, and no one seized him, because his hour had not yet come;

21 Ref therefore said Jesus again to them, `I go away, and ye will seek me, and in your sin ye shall die; whither I go away, ye are not able to come.'

22 Ref The Jews, therefore, said, `Will he kill himself, because he saith, Whither I go away, ye are not able to come?'

23 Ref and he said to them, `Ye are from beneath, I am from above; ye are of this world, I am not of this world;

24 Ref I said, therefore, to you, that ye shall die in your sins, for if ye may not believe that I am `he', ye shall die in your sins.'

25 Ref They said, therefore, to him, `Thou -- who art thou?' and Jesus said to them, `Even what I did speak of to you at the beginning;

26 Ref many things I have to speak concerning you and to judge, but He who sent me is true, and I -- what things I heard from Him -- these I say to the world.'

27 Ref They knew not that of the Father he spake to them;

28 Ref Jesus, therefore, said to them, `When ye may lift up the Son of Man then ye will know that I am `he'; and of myself I do nothing, but according as my Father did teach me, these things I speak;

29 Ref and He who sent me is with me; the Father did not leave me alone, because I, the things pleasing to Him, do always.'

30 Ref As he is speaking these things, many believed in him;

31 Ref Jesus, therefore, said unto the Jews who believed in him, `If ye may remain in my word, truly my disciples ye are, and ye shall know the truth,

32 Ref and the truth shall make you free.'

33 Ref They answered him, `Seed of Abraham we are; and to no one have we been servants at any time; how dost thou say -- Ye shall become free?'

34 Ref Jesus answered them, `Verily, verily, I say to you -- Every one who is committing sin, is a servant of the sin,

35 Ref and the servant doth not remain in the house -- to the age, the son doth remain -- to the age;

36 Ref if then the son may make you free, in reality ye shall be free.

37 Ref `I have known that ye are seed of Abraham, but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you;

38 Ref I -- that which I have seen with my Father do speak, and ye, therefore, that which ye have seen with your father -- ye do.'

39 Ref They answered and said to him, `Our father is Abraham;' Jesus saith to them, `If children of Abraham ye were, the works of Abraham ye were doing;

40 Ref and now, ye seek to kill me -- a man who hath spoken to you the truth I heard from God; this Abraham did not;

41 Ref ye do the works of your father.' They said, therefore, to him, `We of whoredom have not been born; one Father we have -- God;'

42 Ref Jesus then said to them, `If God were your father, ye were loving me, for I came forth from God, and am come; for neither have I come of myself, but He sent me;

43 Ref wherefore do ye not know my speech? because ye are not able to hear my word.

44 Ref `Ye are of a father -- the devil, and the desires of your father ye will to do; he was a man-slayer from the beginning, and in the truth he hath not stood, because there is no truth in him; when one may speak the falsehood, of his own he speaketh, because he is a liar -- also his father.

45 Ref `And because I say the truth, ye do not believe me.

46 Ref Who of you doth convict me of sin? and if I speak truth, wherefore do ye not believe me?

47 Ref he who is of God, the sayings of God he doth hear; because of this ye do not hear, because of God ye are not.'

48 Ref The Jews, therefore, answered and said to him, `Do we not say well, that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a demon?'

49 Ref Jesus answered, `I have not a demon, but I honour my Father, and ye dishonour me;

50 Ref and I do not seek my own glory; there is who is seeking and is judging;

51 Ref verily, verily, I say to you, If any one may keep my word, death he may not see -- to the age.'

52 Ref The Jews, therefore, said to him, `Now we have known that thou hast a demon; Abraham did die, and the prophets, and thou dost say, If any one may keep my word, he shall not taste of death -- to the age!

53 Ref Art thou greater than our father Abraham, who died? and the prophets died; whom dost thou make thyself?'

54 Ref Jesus answered, `If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing; it is my Father who is glorifying me, of whom ye say that He is your God;

55 Ref and ye have not known Him, and I have known Him, and if I say that I have not known Him, I shall be like you -- speaking falsely; but I have known Him, and His word I keep;

56 Ref Abraham, your father, was glad that he might see my day; and he saw, and did rejoice.'

57 The Jews, therefore, said unto him, `Thou art not yet fifty years old, and Abraham hast thou seen?'

58 Ref Jesus said to them, `Verily, verily, I say to you, Before Abraham's coming -- I am;'

59 Ref they took up, therefore, stones that they may cast at him, but Jesus hid himself, and went forth out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

King James Version (KJV)

1 Ref Jesus went unto the mount of Olives.

2 Ref And early in the morning he came again into the temple, and all the people came unto him; and he sat down, and taught them.

3 And the scribes and Pharisees brought unto him a woman taken in adultery; and when they had set her in the midst,

4 They say unto him, Master, this woman was taken in adultery, in the very act.

5 Ref Now Moses in the law commanded us, that such should be stoned: but what sayest thou?

6 Ref This they said, tempting him, that they might have to accuse him. But Jesus stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground, as though he heard them not.

7 Ref So when they continued asking him, he lifted up himself, and said unto them, He that is without sin among you, let him first cast a stone at her.

8 And again he stooped down, and wrote on the ground.

9 Ref And they which heard it, being convicted by their own conscience, went out one by one, beginning at the eldest, even unto the last: and Jesus was left alone, and the woman standing in the midst.

10 Ref When Jesus had lifted up himself, and saw none but the woman, he said unto her, Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?

11 Ref She said, No man, Lord. And Jesus said unto her, Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.

12 Ref Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

13 Ref The Pharisees therefore said unto him, Thou bearest record of thyself; thy record is not true.

14 Ref Jesus answered and said unto them, Though I bear record of myself, yet my record is true: for I know whence I came, and whither I go; but ye cannot tell whence I come, and whither I go.

15 Ref Ye judge after the flesh; I judge no man.

16 Ref And yet if I judge, my judgment is true: for I am not alone, but I and the Father that sent me.

17 Ref It is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true.

18 Ref I am one that bear witness of myself, and the Father that sent me beareth witness of me.

19 Ref Then said they unto him, Where is thy Father? Jesus answered, Ye neither know me, nor my Father: if ye had known me, ye should have known my Father also.

20 Ref These words spake Jesus in the treasury, as he taught in the temple: and no man laid hands on him; for his hour was not yet come.

21 Ref Then said Jesus again unto them, I go my way, and ye shall seek me, and shall die in your sins: whither I go, ye cannot come.

22 Ref Then said the Jews, Will he kill himself? because he saith, Whither I go, ye cannot come.

23 Ref And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.

24 Ref I said therefore unto you, that ye shall die in your sins: for if ye believe not that I am he, ye shall die in your sins.

25 Ref Then said they unto him, Who art thou? And Jesus saith unto them, Even the same that I said unto you from the beginning.

26 Ref I have many things to say and to judge of you: but he that sent me is true; and I speak to the world those things which I have heard of him.

27 Ref They understood not that he spake to them of the Father.

28 Ref Then said Jesus unto them, When ye have lifted up the Son of man, then shall ye know that I am he, and that I do nothing of myself; but as my Father hath taught me, I speak these things.

29 Ref And he that sent me is with me: the Father hath not left me alone; for I do always those things that please him.

30 Ref As he spake these words, many believed on him.

31 Ref Then said Jesus to those Jews which believed on him, If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed;

32 Ref And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.

33 Ref They answered him, We be Abraham's seed, and were never in bondage to any man: how sayest thou, Ye shall be made free?

34 Ref Jesus answered them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Whosoever committeth sin is the servant of sin.

35 Ref And the servant abideth not in the house for ever: but the Son abideth ever.

36 Ref If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

37 Ref I know that ye are Abraham's seed; but ye seek to kill me, because my word hath no place in you.

38 Ref I speak that which I have seen with my Father: and ye do that which ye have seen with your father.

39 Ref They answered and said unto him, Abraham is our father. Jesus saith unto them, If ye were Abraham's children, ye would do the works of Abraham.

40 Ref But now ye seek to kill me, a man that hath told you the truth, which I have heard of God: this did not Abraham.

41 Ref Ye do the deeds of your father. Then said they to him, We be not born of fornication; we have one Father, even God.

42 Ref Jesus said unto them, If God were your Father, ye would love me: for I proceeded forth and came from God; neither came I of myself, but he sent me.

43 Ref Why do ye not understand my speech? even because ye cannot hear my word.

44 Ref Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.

45 Ref And because I tell you the truth, ye believe me not.

46 Ref Which of you convinceth me of sin? And if I say the truth, why do ye not believe me?

47 Ref He that is of God heareth God's words: ye therefore hear them not, because ye are not of God.

48 Ref Then answered the Jews, and said unto him, Say we not well that thou art a Samaritan, and hast a devil?

49 Ref Jesus answered, I have not a devil; but I honour my Father, and ye do dishonour me.

50 Ref And I seek not mine own glory: there is one that seeketh and judgeth.

51 Ref Verily, verily, I say unto you, If a man keep my saying, he shall never see death.

52 Ref Then said the Jews unto him, Now we know that thou hast a devil. Abraham is dead, and the prophets; and thou sayest, If a man keep my saying, he shall never taste of death.

53 Ref Art thou greater than our father Abraham, which is dead? and the prophets are dead: whom makest thou thyself?

54 Ref Jesus answered, If I honour myself, my honour is nothing: it is my Father that honoureth me; of whom ye say, that he is your God:

55 Ref Yet ye have not known him; but I know him: and if I should say, I know him not, I shall be a liar like unto you: but I know him, and keep his saying.

56 Ref Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.

57 Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?

58 Ref Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

59 Ref Then took they up stones to cast at him: but Jesus hid himself, and went out of the temple, going through the midst of them, and so passed by.

3 The scribes and the Pharisees brought a woman taken in adultery. Having set her in the midst,

4 they told him, "Teacher, we found this woman in adultery, in the very act.

5 Ref Now in our law, Moses commanded us to stone such. What then do you say about her?"

6 Ref They said this testing him, that they might have something to accuse him of. But Jesus stooped down, and wrote on the ground with his finger.

7 Ref But when they continued asking him, he looked up and said to them, "He who is without sin among you, let him throw the first stone at her."

8 Again he stooped down, and with his finger wrote on the ground.

12 Ref Again, therefore, Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. He who follows me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the light of life."

13 Ref The Pharisees therefore said to him, "You testify about yourself. Your testimony is not valid."

14 Ref Jesus answered them, "Even if I testify about myself, my testimony is true, for I know where I came from, and where I am going; but you don't know where I came from, or where I am going.

15 Ref You judge according to the flesh. I judge no one.

16 Ref Even if I do judge, my judgment is true, for I am not alone, but I am with the Father who sent me.

17 Ref It's also written in your law that the testimony of two people is valid.

18 Ref I am one who testifies about myself, and the Father who sent me testifies about me."

19 Ref They said therefore to him, "Where is your Father?" Jesus answered, "You know neither me, nor my Father. If you knew me, you would know my Father also."

22 Ref The Jews therefore said, "Will he kill himself, that he says, 'Where I am going, you can't come?'"

23 Ref He said to them, "You are from beneath. I am from above. You are of this world. I am not of this world.

24 Ref I said therefore to you that you will die in your sins; for unless you believe that I am he, you will die in your sins."

25 Ref They said therefore to him, "Who are you?" Jesus said to them, "Just what I have been saying to you from the beginning.

26 Ref I have many things to speak and to judge concerning you. However he who sent me is true; and the things which I heard from him, these I say to the world."

27 Ref They didn't understand that he spoke to them about the Father.

28 Ref Jesus therefore said to them, "When you have lifted up the Son of Man, then you will know that I am he, and I do nothing of myself, but as my Father taught me, I say these things.

29 Ref He who sent me is with me. The Father hasn't left me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to him."

30 Ref As he spoke these things, many believed in him.

31 Ref Jesus therefore said to those Jews who had believed him, "If you remain in my word, then you are truly my disciples.

32 Ref You will know the truth, and the truth will make you free."

33 Ref They answered him, "We are Abraham's seed, and have never been in bondage to anyone. How do you say, 'You will be made free?'"

34 Ref Jesus answered them, "Most assuredly I tell you, everyone who commits sin is the bondservant of sin.

35 Ref A bondservant doesn't live in the house forever. A son remains forever.

36 Ref If therefore the Son makes you free, you will be free indeed.

37 Ref I know that you are Abraham's seed, yet you seek to kill me, because my word finds no place in you.

38 Ref I say the things which I have seen with my Father; and you also do the things which you have seen with your father."

39 Ref They answered him, "Our father is Abraham." Jesus said to them, "If you were Abraham's children, you would do the works of Abraham.

40 Ref But now you seek to kill me, a man who has told you the truth, which I heard from God. Abraham didn't do this.

41 Ref You do the works of your father." They said to him, "We were not born of sexual immorality. We have one Father, God."

42 Ref Therefore Jesus said to them, "If God were your Father, you would love me, for I came out and have come from God. For I haven't come of myself, but he sent me.

43 Ref Why don't you understand my speech? Because you can't hear my word.

44 Ref You are of your Father, the devil, and you want to do the desires of your father. He was a murderer from the beginning, and doesn't stand in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaks a lie, he speaks on his own; for he is a liar, and the father of it.

45 Ref But because I tell the truth, you don't believe me.

46 Ref Which of you convicts me of sin? If I tell the truth, why do you not believe me?

47 Ref He who is of God hears the words of God. For this cause you don't hear, because you are not of God."

48 Ref Then the Jews answered him, "Don't we say well that you are a Samaritan, and have a demon?"

49 Ref Jesus answered, "I don't have a demon, but I honor my Father, and you dishonor me.

50 Ref But I don't seek my own glory. There is one who seeks and judges.

51 Ref Most assuredly, I tell you, if a person keeps my word, he will never see death."

52 Ref Then the Jews said to him, "Now we know that you have a demon. Abraham died, and the prophets; and you say, 'If a man keeps my word, he will never taste of death.'

53 Ref Are you greater than our father, Abraham, who died? The prophets died. Who do you make yourself out to be?"

54 Ref Jesus answered, "If I glorify myself, my glory is nothing. It is my Father who glorifies me, of whom you say that he is our God.

55 Ref You have not known him, but I know him. If I said, 'I don't know him,' I would be like you, a liar. But I know him, and keep his word.

56 Ref Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day. He saw it, and was glad."

57 The Jews therefore said to him, "You are not yet fifty years old, and have you seen Abraham?"

58 Ref Jesus said to them, "Most assuredly, I tell you, before Abraham came into existence, I AM."

59 Ref Therefore they took up stones to throw at him, but Jesus was hidden, and went out of the temple, having gone through the midst of them, and so passed by.
