⁵⁵ O death, where is thy victory? O death, where is thy sting?

¹⁴ I will ransom them from the power of Sheol; I will redeem them from death: O death, where are thy plagues? O Sheol, where is thy destruction? repentance shall be hid from mine eyes.

⁴⁸ What man is he that shall live and not see death, That shall deliver his soul from the power of Sheol? Selah

⁸ (For the redemption of their life is costly, And it faileth for ever;)

⁹ That he should still live alway, That he should not see corruption.

¹⁰ For he shall see it. Wise men die; The fool and the brutish alike perish, And leave their wealth to others.

¹¹ Their inward thought is, `that' their houses `shall continue' for ever, `And' their dwelling-places to all generations; They call their lands after their own names.

¹² But man `being' in honor abideth not: He is like the beasts that perish.

¹³ This their way is their folly: Yet after them men approve their sayings. Selah

¹⁴ They are appointed as a flock for Sheol; Death shall be their shepherd; And the upright shall have dominion over them in the morning; And their beauty shall be for Sheol to consume, That there be no habitation for it.

¹⁵ But God will redeem my soul from the power of Sheol; For he will receive me. Selah

¹³ And the sea gave up the dead that were in it; and death and Hades gave up the dead that were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works.

¹⁴ And death and Hades were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death, `even' the lake of fire.

¹⁴ Nevertheless death reigned from Adam until Moses, even over them that had not sinned after the likeness of Adam's transgression, who is a figure of him that was to come.

⁵ And he said, Who art thou, Lord? And he `said', I am Jesus whom thou persecutest:

²⁷ Because thou wilt not leave my soul unto Hades, Neither wilt thou give thy Holy One to see corruption.

²³ And in Hades he lifted up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.

⁵ For the living know that they shall die: but the dead know not anything, neither have they any more a reward; for the memory of them is forgotten.

⁶ As well their love, as their hatred and their envy, is perished long ago; neither have they any more a portion for ever in anything that is done under the sun.

⁸ There is no man that hath power over the spirit to retain the spirit; neither hath he power over the day of death; and there is no discharge in war: neither shall wickedness deliver him that is given to it.

¹⁹ For that which befalleth the sons of men befalleth beasts; even one thing befalleth them: as the one dieth, so dieth the other; yea, they have all one breath; and man hath no preeminence above the beasts: for all is vanity.

¹⁵ Then said I in my heart, As it happeneth to the fool, so will it happen even to me; and why was I then more wise? Then said I in my heart, that this also is vanity.

¹⁶ For of the wise man, even as of the fool, there is no remembrance for ever; seeing that in the days to come all will have been long forgotten. And how doth the wise man die even as the fool!

¹⁰ And they have tails like unto scorpions, and stings; and in their tails is their power to hurt men five months.

¹³ The members of his body shall be devoured, `Yea', the first-born of death shall devour his members.

¹⁴ He shall be rooted out of his tent where he trusteth; And he shall be brought to the king of terrors.
