¹³ And when he came, lo, Eli was sitting upon his seat by the wayside watching; for his heart trembled for the ark of God. And when the man came into the city, and told it, all the city cried out.

⁹ So Hannah rose up after they had eaten in Shiloh, and after they had drunk. Now Eli the priest was sitting upon his seat by the door-post of the temple of Jehovah.

¹⁸ And it came to pass, when he made mention of the ark of God, that `Eli' feel from off his seat backward by the side of the gate; and his neck brake, and he died: for he was an old man, and heavy. And he had judged Israel forty years.

⁹ For the Canaanites and all the inhabitants of the land will hear of it, and will compass us round, and cut off our name from the earth: and what wilt thou do for thy great name?

³ And they said unto me, The remnant that are left of the captivity there in the province are in great affliction and reproach: the wall of Jerusalem also is broken down, and the gates thereof are burned with fire.

⁴ And it came to pass, when I heard these words, that I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days; and I fasted and prayed before the God of heaven,

⁸ Jehovah, I love the habitation of thy house, And the place where thy glory dwelleth.

¹ O God, the nations are come into thine inheritance; Thy holy temple have they defiled; They have laid Jerusalem in heaps.

² The dead bodies of thy servants have they given to be food unto the birds of the heavens, The flesh of thy saints unto the beasts of the earth.

³ Their blood have they shed like water round about Jerusalem; And there was none to bury them.

⁴ We are become a reproach to our neighbors, A scoffing and derision to them that are round about us.

⁵ How long, O Jehovah? wilt thou be angry for ever? Shall thy jealousy burn like fire?

⁶ Pour out thy wrath upon the nations that know thee not, And upon the kingdoms that call not upon thy name.

⁷ For they have devoured Jacob, And laid waste his habitation.

⁸ Remember not against us the iniquities of our forefathers: Let thy tender mercies speedily meet us; For we are brought very low.

⁴ How shall we sing Jehovah's song In a foreign land?

⁵ If I forget thee, O Jerusalem, Let my right hand forget `her skill'.

⁶ Let my tongue cleave to the roof of my mouth, If I remember thee not; If I prefer not Jerusalem Above my chief joy.
