¹³ And he lodged there that night, and took of that which he had with him a present for Esau his brother:

¹¹ And their father Israel said unto them, If it be so now, do this: take of the choice fruits of the land in your vessels, and carry down the man a present, a little balm, and a little honey, spicery and myrrh, nuts, and almonds;

¹⁶ A man's gift maketh room for him, And bringeth him before great men.

¹⁴ A gift in secret pacifieth anger; And a present in the bosom, strong wrath.

⁶ Many will entreat the favor of the liberal man; And every man is a friend to him that giveth gifts.

⁸ A bribe is `as' a precious stone in the eyes of him that hath it; Whithersoever it turneth, it prospereth.

²⁶ And when Joseph came home, they brought him the present which was in their hand into the house, and bowed down themselves to him to the earth.

²⁷ And now this present which thy servant hath brought unto my lord, let it be given unto the young men that follow my lord.

⁸ Ask thy young men, and they will tell thee: wherefore let the young men find favor in thine eyes; for we come in a good day: give, I pray thee, whatsoever cometh to thy hand, unto thy servants, and to thy son David.

⁶ And Joseph was the governor over the land; he it was that sold to all the people of the land. And Joseph's brethren came, and bowed down themselves to him with their faces to the earth.

¹⁰ And Jacob said, Nay, I pray thee, if now I have found favor in thy sight, then receive my present at my hand; forasmuch as I have seen thy face, as one seeth the face of God, and thou wast pleased with me.

²⁰ and ye shall say, Moreover, behold, thy servant Jacob is behind us. For he said, I will appease him with the present that goeth before me, and afterward I will see his face; peradventure he will accept me.

²¹ So the present passed over before him: and he himself lodged that night in the company.

² and he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood over against him: and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed himself to the earth,
