⁴ And Jehovah said unto Gideon, The people are yet too many; bring them down unto the water, and I will try them for thee there: and it shall be, that of whom I say unto thee, This shall go with thee, the same shall go with thee; and of whomsoever I say unto thee, This shall not go with thee, the same shall not go.

¹ And it came to pass after these things, that God did prove Abraham, and said unto him, Abraham. And he said, Here am I.

⁶ And Jonathan said to the young man that bare his armor, Come, and let us go over unto the garrison of these uncircumcised: it may be that Jehovah will work for us; for there is no restraint to Jehovah to save by many or by few.

⁷ But Jehovah said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have rejected him: for `Jehovah seeth' not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but Jehovah looketh on the heart.

¹⁰ But he knoweth the way that I take; When he hath tried me, I shall come forth as gold.

⁹ O let the wickedness of the wicked come to an end, but establish thou the righteous: For the righteous God trieth the minds and hearts.

¹⁶ There is no king saved by the multitude of a host: A mighty man is not delivered by great strength.

¹⁰ For thou, O God, hast proved us: Thou hast tried us, as silver is tried.

²⁷ I have made thee a trier `and' a fortress among my people; that thou mayest know and try their way.

²⁸ They are all grievous revolters, going about with slanders; they are brass and iron: they all of them deal corruptly.

²⁹ The bellows blow fiercely; the lead is consumed of the fire: in vain do they go on refining; for the wicked are not plucked away.

³⁰ Refuse silver shall men them, because Jehovah hath rejected them.

² But who can abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiner's fire, and like fuller's soap:

³ and he will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver, and he will purify the sons of Levi, and refine them as gold and silver; and they shall offer unto Jehovah offerings in righteousness.
