²⁰ And he that was sown upon the rocky places, this is he that heareth the word, and straightway with joy receiveth it;

³⁵ He was the lamp that burneth and shineth; and ye were willing to rejoice for a season in his light.

²⁰ for Herod feared John, knowing that he was a righteous and holy man, and kept him safe. And when he heard him, he was much perplexed; and he heard him gladly.

³¹ And they come unto thee as the people cometh, and they sit before thee as my people, and they hear thy words, but do them not; for with their mouth they show much love, but their heart goeth after their gain.

³² And, lo, thou art unto them as a very lovely song of one that hath a pleasant voice, and can play well on an instrument; for they hear thy words, but they do them not.

² Yet they seek me daily, and delight to know my ways: as a nation that did righteousness, and forsook not the ordinance of their God, they ask of me righteous judgments; they delight to draw near unto God.

¹² Then believed they his words; They sang his praise.

¹³ They soon forgat his works; They waited not for his counsel,

¹⁴ and that which was a temptation to you in my flesh ye despised not, nor rejected; but ye received me as an angel of God, `even' as Christ Jesus.

¹⁵ Where then is that gratulation of yourselves? for I bear you witness, that, if possible, ye would have plucked out your eyes and given them to me.

¹³ And Simon also himself believed: and being baptized, he continued with Philip; and beholding signs and great miracles wrought, he was amazed.

¹⁶ And these in like manner are they that are sown upon the rocky `places', who, when they have heard the word, straightway receive it with joy;

¹⁷ and they have no root in themselves, but endure for a while; then, when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, straightway they stumble.

⁵ and others fell upon the rocky places, where they had not much earth: and straightway they sprang up, because they had no deepness of earth:

⁶ and when the sun was risen, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.

³⁴ When he slew them, then they inquired after him; And they returned and sought God earnestly.

³⁵ And they remembered that God was their rock, And the Most High God their redeemer.

³⁶ But they flattered him with their mouth, And lied unto him with their tongue.

³⁷ For their heart was not right with him, Neither were they faithful in his covenant.

¹⁴ And when they had made an end, they brought the rest of the money before the king and Jehoiada, whereof were made vessels for the house of Jehovah, even vessels wherewith to minister and to offer, and spoons, and vessels of gold and silver. And they offered burnt-offerings in the house of Jehovah continually all the days of Jehoiada.

⁶ And the king called for Jehoiada the chief, and said unto him, Why hast thou not required of the Levites to bring in out of Judah and out of Jerusalem the tax of Moses the servant of Jehovah, and of the assembly of Israel, for the tent of the testimony?

² And Joash did that which was right in the eyes of Jehovah all the days of Jehoiada the priest.

¹³ And Saul said, There shall not a man be put to death this day; for to-day Jehovah hath wrought deliverance in Israel.

¹⁴ Then said Samuel to the people, Come, and let us go to Gilgal, and renew the kingdom there.

¹⁵ And all the people went to Gilgal; and there they made Saul king before Jehovah in Gilgal; and there they offered sacrifices of peace-offerings before Jehovah; and there Saul and all the men of Israel rejoiced greatly.
