⁶ if any man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having children that believe, who are not accused of riot or unruly.

¹² Let deacons be husbands of one wife, ruling `their' children and their own houses well.

² The bishop therefore must be without reproach, the husband of one wife, temperate, sober-minded, orderly, given to hospitality, apt to teach;

³ no brawler, no striker; but gentle, not contentious, no lover of money;

⁴ one that ruleth well his own house, having `his' children in subjection with all gravity;

⁵ (but if a man knoweth not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

⁶ not a novice, lest being puffed up he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

⁷ Moreover he must have good testimony from them that are without; lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

¹⁰ For there are many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision,

⁷ For the bishop must be blameless, as God's steward; not self-willed, not soon angry, no brawler, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre;

⁸ but given to hospitality, as lover of good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled;

²² Neither shall they take for their wives a widow, nor her that is put away; but they shall take virgins of the seed of the house of Israel, or a widow that is the widow of a priest.

¹⁴ And we exhort you, brethren, admonish the disorderly, encourage the fainthearted, support the weak, be longsuffering toward all.

¹⁸ And be not drunken with wine, wherein is riot, but be filled with the Spirit;

⁵ There was in the days of Herod, king of Judaea, a certain priest named Zacharias, of the course of Abijah: and he had a wife of the daughters of Aaron, and her name was Elisabeth.

¹⁵ And did he not make one, although he had the residue of the Spirit? And wherefore one? He sought a godly seed. Therefore take heed to your spirit, and let none deal treacherously against the wife of his youth.

⁷ Whoso keepeth the law is a wise son; But he that is a companion of gluttons shameth his father.

²⁹ Wherefore kick ye at my sacrifice and at mine offering, which I have commanded in `my' habitation, and honorest thy sons above me, to make yourselves fat with the chiefest of all the offerings of Israel my people?

³⁰ Therefore Jehovah, the God of Israel, saith, I said indeed that thy house, and the house of thy father, should walk before me for ever: but now Jehovah saith, Be it far from me; for them that honor me I will honor, and they that despise me shall be lightly esteemed.

²² Now Eli was very old; and he heard all that his sons did unto all Israel, and how that they lay with the women that did service at the door of the tent of meeting.

¹¹ And Elkanah went to Ramah to his house. And the child did minister unto Jehovah before Eli the priest.

¹⁴ A widow, or one divorced, or a profane woman, a harlot, these shall he not take: but a virgin of his own people shall he take to wife.

⁷ They shall not take a woman that is a harlot, or profane; neither shall they take a woman put away from her husband: for he is holy unto his God.

¹⁹ For I have known him, to the end that he may command his children and his household after him, that they may keep the way of Jehovah, to do righteousness and justice; to the end that Jehovah may bring upon Abraham that which he hath spoken of him.
