Genesis 40
Bible in Basic English (BBE)
1 Ref Now after these things the chief servant who had the care of the wine, and the chief bread-maker in Pharaoh's house, did something against Pharaoh's orders;
2 Ref And Pharaoh was angry with his two servants, with the chief wine-servant and the chief bread-maker;
3 Ref And he put them in prison under the care of the captain of the army, in the same prison where Joseph himself was shut up.
4 Ref And the captain put them in Joseph's care, and he did what was needed for them; and they were kept in prison for some time.
5 Ref And these two had a dream on the same night; the chief wine-servant and the chief bread-maker of the king of Egypt, who were in prison, the two of them had dreams with a special sense.
6 Ref And in the morning when Joseph came to them he saw that they were looking sad.
7 Ref And he said to the servants of Pharaoh who were in prison with him, Why are you looking so sad?
8 Ref Then they said to him, We have had a dream, and no one is able to give us the sense. And Joseph said, Does not the sense of dreams come from God? what was your dream?
9 Ref Then the chief wine-servant gave Joseph an account of his dream, and said, In my dream I saw a vine before me;
10 And on the vine were three branches; and it seemed as if it put out buds and flowers, and from them came grapes ready for cutting.
11 Ref And Pharaoh's cup was in my hand, and I took the grapes and crushing them into Pharaoh's cup, gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand.
12 Ref Then Joseph said, This is the sense of your dream: the three branches are three days;
13 Ref After three days Pharaoh will give you honour, and put you back into your place, and you will give him his cup as you did before, when you were his wine-servant.
14 Ref But keep me in mind when things go well for you, and be good to me and say a good word for me to Pharaoh and get me out of this prison:
15 Ref For truly I was taken by force from the land of the Hebrews; and I have done nothing for which I might be put in prison.
16 Ref Now when the chief bread-maker saw that the first dream had a good sense, he said to Joseph, I had a dream; and in my dream there were three baskets of white bread on my head;
17 Ref And in the top basket were all sorts of cooked meats for Pharaoh; and the birds were taking them out of the baskets on my head.
18 Ref Then Joseph said, This is the sense of your dream: the three baskets are three days;
19 Ref After three days Pharaoh will take you out of prison, hanging you on a tree, so that your flesh will be food for birds.
20 Ref Now the third day was Pharaoh's birthday, and he gave a feast for all his servants; and he gave honour to the chief wine-servant and the chief bread-maker among the others.
21 Ref And he put the chief wine-servant back in his old place; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand.
22 Ref But the chief bread-maker was put to death by hanging, as Joseph had said.
23 Ref But the wine-servant did not keep Joseph in mind or give a thought to him.

1 Ref And it came to pass after these things, that the butler of the king of Egypt and his baker offended their lord the king of Egypt.
2 Ref And Pharaoh was wroth against his two officers, against the chief of the butlers, and against the chief of the bakers.
3 Ref And he put them in ward in the house of the captain of the guard, into the prison, the place where Joseph was bound.
4 Ref And the captain of the guard charged Joseph with them, and he ministered unto them: and they continued a season in ward.
5 Ref And they dreamed a dream both of them, each man his dream, in one night, each man according to the interpretation of his dream, the butler and the baker of the king of Egypt, who were bound in the prison.
6 Ref And Joseph came in unto them in the morning, and saw them, and, behold, they were sad.
7 Ref And he asked Pharaoh's officers that were with him in ward in his master's house, saying, Wherefore look ye so sad to-day?
8 Ref And they said unto him, We have dreamed a dream, and there is none that can interpret it. And Joseph said unto them, Do not interpretations belong to God? tell it me, I pray you.
9 Ref And the chief butler told his dream to Joseph, and said to him, In my dream, behold, a vine was before me;
10 and in the vine were three branches: and it was as though it budded, `and' its blossoms shot forth; `and' the clusters thereof brought forth ripe grapes:
11 Ref and Pharaoh's cup was in my hand; and I took the grapes, and pressed them into Pharaoh's cup, and I gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand.
12 Ref And Joseph said unto him, This is the interpretation of it: the three branches are three days;
13 Ref within yet three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head, and restore thee unto thine office: and thou shalt give Pharaoh's cup into his hand, after the former manner when thou wast his butler.
14 Ref But have me in thy remembrance when it shall be well with thee, and show kindness, I pray thee, unto me, and make mention of me unto Pharaoh, and bring me out of this house:
15 Ref for indeed I was stolen away out of the land of the Hebrews: and here also have I done nothing that they should put me into the dungeon.
16 Ref When the chief baker saw that the interpretation was good, he said unto Joseph, I also was in my dream, and, behold, three baskets of white bread were on my head:
17 Ref and in the uppermost basket there was of all manner of baked food for Pharaoh; and the birds did eat them out of the basket upon my head.
18 Ref And Joseph answered and said, This is the interpretation thereof: the three baskets are three days;
19 Ref within yet three days shall Pharaoh lift up thy head from off thee, and shall hang thee on a tree; and the birds shall eat thy flesh from off thee.
20 Ref And it came to pass the third day, which was Pharaoh's birthday, that he made a feast unto all his servants: and he lifted up the head of the chief butler and the head of the chief baker among his servants.
21 Ref And he restored the chief butler unto his butlership again; and he gave the cup into Pharaoh's hand:
22 Ref but he hanged the chief baker: as Joseph had interpreted to them.
23 Ref Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him.
