John 11

Bible in Basic English (BBE)

1 Ref Now a certain man named Lazarus was ill; he was of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha.

2 Ref (The Mary whose brother Lazarus was ill, was the Mary who put perfumed oil on the Lord and made his feet dry with her hair.)

3 Ref So the sisters sent to him, saying, Lord, your dear friend is ill.

4 Ref When this came to his ears, Jesus said, The end of this disease is not death, but the glory of God, so that the Son of God may have glory because of it.

5 Ref Now Jesus had love in his heart for Martha and her sister and Lazarus.

6 Ref So when the news came to him that Lazarus was ill, he did not go from the place where he was for two days.

7 Ref Then after that time he said to his disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.

8 Ref The disciples said to him, Master, the Jews were attempting only the other day to have you stoned, and are you going back there again?

9 Ref Then Jesus said in answer, Are there not twelve hours in the day? A man may go about in the day without falling, because he sees the light of this world.

10 Ref But if a man goes about in the night, he may have a fall because the light is not in him.

11 Ref These things said he: and after that he said to them, Lazarus our friend is at rest; but I go so that I may make him come out of his sleep.

12 Then his disciples said to him, Lord, if he is resting he will get well.

13 Ref Jesus, however, was talking of his death: but they had the idea that he was talking about taking rest in sleep.

14 Ref Then Jesus said to them clearly, Lazarus is dead.

15 Ref And because of you I am glad I was not there, so that you may have faith; but let us go to him.

1 Ref Now a certain man was sick, Lazarus of Bethany, of the village of Mary and her sister Martha.

2 Ref And it was that Mary who anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.

3 Ref The sisters therefore sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick.

4 Ref But when Jesus heard it, he said, This sickness is not unto death, but for the glory of God, that the Son of God may be glorified thereby.

5 Ref Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.

6 Ref When therefore he heard that he was sick, he abode at that time two days in the place where he was.

7 Ref Then after this he saith to the disciples, Let us go into Judaea again.

8 Ref The disciples say unto him, Rabbi, the Jews were but now seeking to stone thee; and goest thou thither again?

9 Ref Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If a man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world.

10 Ref But if a man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because the light is not in him.

11 Ref These things spake he: and after this he saith unto them, Our friend Lazarus is fallen asleep; but I go, that I may awake him out of sleep.

12 The disciples therefore said unto him, Lord, if he is fallen asleep, he will recover.

13 Ref Now Jesus had spoken of his death: but they thought that he spake of taking rest in sleep.

14 Ref Then Jesus therefore said unto them plainly, Lazarus is dead.

15 Ref And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him.
