Mark 8

Bible in Basic English (BBE)

1 Ref In those days again, when there was a great mass of people and they had no food, he made his disciples come to him and said to them,

2 Ref I have pity for these people because they have been with me now three days, and have no food;

3 Ref If I send them away to their houses with no food, they will be overcome by weariness on the way; and some of them have come from far.

4 Ref And his disciples said in answer, How will it be possible to get enough bread for these men here in a waste place?

5 Ref And he put the question, How much bread have you? And they said, Seven cakes.

6 Ref And he made the people be seated on the earth: and he took the seven cakes and, having given praise, he gave the broken bread to his disciples to put before them; and they put it before the people.

7 Ref And they had some small fishes; and blessing them he had them put before the people in the same way.

8 Ref And they took the food, and had enough; and they took up seven baskets full of the broken bits.

9 And there were about four thousand people: and he sent them away.

10 Ref And he got into the boat with his disciples straight away, and came into the country of Dalmanutha.

11 Ref And the Pharisees came out and put questions to him, requesting from him a sign from heaven, testing him.

12 Ref And he was very sad in spirit, and said, Why is this generation looking for a sign? truly, I say to you, No sign will be given to this generation.

13 Ref And he went away from them, and again got into the boat and went across to the other side.

14 Ref And they had taken no thought to get bread; and they had only one cake of bread with them in the boat.

15 Ref And he said to them, Take care to be on the watch against the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.

16 Ref And they said to one another, We have no bread.

17 Ref And Jesus, hearing it, said to them, Why are you reasoning among yourselves because you have no bread? do you still not see, and is it still not clear to you? are your hearts so hard?

18 Ref Having eyes, do you not see? and having ears, have you no hearing? and have you no memory?

19 Ref When I made a division of the five cakes of bread among the five thousand, what number of baskets full of broken bits did you take up? They said to him, Twelve.

20 Ref And when the seven among the four thousand, what number of baskets full of broken bits did you take up? And they said to him, Seven.

21 Ref And he said to them, Is it still not clear to you?

22 Ref And they came to Beth-saida. And they took a blind man to him, requesting him to put his hands on him.

23 Ref And he took the blind man by the hand, and went with him out of the town; and when he had put water from his mouth on his eyes, and put his hands on him, he said, Do you see anything?

24 Ref And looking up, he said, I see men; I see them like trees, walking.

25 Ref Then again he put his hands on his eyes; and looking hard, he was able to see, and saw all things clearly.

26 Ref And he sent him away to his house, saying, Do not even go into the town.

27 Ref And Jesus went out, with his disciples, into the little towns round Caesarea Philippi; and on the way he put a question to his disciples, saying, Who do men say that I am?

28 Ref And they made answer, John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but others, One of the prophets.

29 Ref And he said to them, But who do you say I am? Peter said in answer, You are the Christ.

30 Ref And he put them under orders not to say this of him to anyone.

31 Ref And teaching them, he said that the Son of man would have to undergo much, and be hated by those in authority, and the chief priests, and the scribes, and be put to death, and after three days come back from the dead.

32 Ref And he said this openly. And Peter took him, and was protesting.

33 Ref But he, turning about, and seeing his disciples, said sharply to Peter, Get out of my way, Satan: for your mind is not on the things of God, but on the things of men.

34 Ref And turning to the mass of people with his disciples, he said to them, If any man has the desire to come after me, let him give up all other desires, and take up his cross and come after me.

35 Ref Whoever has a desire to keep his life, will have it taken from him; and whoever gives up his life because of me and the good news, will keep it.

36 Ref What profit has a man if he gets all the world with the loss of his life?

37 Ref And what would a man give in exchange for his life?

38 Ref Whoever has a feeling of shame because of me and my words in this false and evil generation, the Son of man will have a feeling of shame because of him, when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

1 Ref In those days, when there was again a great multitude, and they had nothing to eat, he called unto him his disciples, and saith unto them,

2 Ref I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days, and have nothing to eat:

3 Ref and if I send them away fasting to their home, they will faint on the way; and some of them are come from far.

4 Ref And his disciples answered him, Whence shall one be able to fill these men with bread here in a desert place?

5 Ref And he asked them, How many loaves have ye? And they said, Seven.

6 Ref And he commandeth the multitude to sit down on the ground: and he took the seven loaves, and having given thanks, he brake, and gave to his disciples, to set before them; and they set them before the multitude.

7 Ref And they had a few small fishes: and having blessed them, he commanded to set these also before them.

8 Ref And they ate, and were filled: and they took up, of broken pieces that remained over, seven baskets.

9 And they were about four thousand: and he sent them away.

10 Ref And straightway he entered into the boat with his disciples, and came into the parts of Dalmanutha.

11 Ref And the Pharisees came forth, and began to question with him, seeking of him a sign from heaven, trying him.

12 Ref And he sighed deeply in his spirit, and saith, Why doth this generation seek a sign? verily I say unto you, There shall no sign be given unto this generation.

13 Ref And he left them, and again entering into `the boat' departed to the other side.

14 Ref And they forgot to take bread; and they had not in the boat with them more than one loaf.

15 Ref And he charged them, saying, Take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.

16 Ref And they reasoned one with another, saying, We have no bread.

17 Ref And Jesus perceiving it saith unto them, Why reason ye, because ye have no bread? do ye not yet perceive, neither understand? have ye your heart hardened?

18 Ref Having eyes, see ye not? and having ears, hear ye not? and do ye not remember?

19 Ref When I brake the five loaves among the five thousand, how many baskets full of broken pieces took ye up? They say unto him, Twelve.

20 Ref And when the seven among the four thousand, how many basketfuls of broken pieces took ye up? And they say unto him, Seven.

21 Ref And he said unto them, Do ye not yet understand?

22 Ref And they come unto Bethsaida. And they bring to him a blind man, and beseech him to touch him.

23 Ref And he took hold of the blind man by the hand, and brought him out of the village; and when he had spit on his eyes, and laid his hands upon him, he asked him, Seest thou aught?

24 Ref And he looked up, and said, I see men; for I behold `them' as trees, walking.

25 Ref Then again he laid his hands upon his eyes; and he looked stedfastly, and was restored, and saw all things clearly.

26 Ref And he sent him away to his home, saying, Do not even enter into the village.

27 Ref And Jesus went forth, and his disciples, into the villages of Caesarea Philippi: and on the way he asked his disciples, saying unto them, Who do men say that I am?

28 Ref And they told him, saying, John the Baptist; and others, Elijah; but others, One of the prophets.

29 Ref And he asked them, But who say ye that I am? Peter answereth and saith unto him, Thou art the Christ.

30 Ref And he charged them that they should tell no man of him.

31 Ref And he began to teach them, that the Son of man must suffer many things, and be rejected by the elders, and the chief priests, and the scribes, and be killed, and after three days rise again.

32 Ref And he spake the saying openly. And Peter took him, and began to rebuke him.

33 Ref But he turning about, and seeing his disciples, rebuked Peter, and saith, Get thee behind me, Satan; for thou mindest not the things of God, but the things of men.

34 Ref And he called unto him the multitude with his disciples, and said unto them, If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me.

35 Ref For whosoever would save his life shall lose it; and whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's shall save it.

36 Ref For what doth it profit a man, to gain the whole world, and forfeit his life?

37 Ref For what should a man give in exchange for his life?

38 Ref For whosoever shall be ashamed of me and of my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of man also shall be ashamed of him, when he cometh in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.

10 Ref Immediately he entered into the boat with his disciples, and came into the region of Dalmanutha.

11 Ref The Pharisees came out and began to question him, seeking from him a sign from heaven, and testing him.

12 Ref He sighed deeply in his spirit, and said, "Why does this generation{The word translated "generation" here (genea) could also be translated "people," "race," or "family."} seek a sign? Most assuredly I tell you, no sign will be given to this generation."

13 Ref He left them, and again entering into the boat, departed to the other side.
