Acts 11
Bible in Basic English (BBE)
1 Ref Now the Apostles and the brothers who were in Judaea had news that the word of God had been given to the Gentiles.
2 Ref And when Peter came to Jerusalem, those who kept the rule of circumcision had an argument with him,
3 Ref Saying, You went to men without circumcision, and took food with them.
4 Ref But Peter gave them an account of it all in order, saying to them,
5 Ref I was in the town of Joppa, at prayer: and falling into a deep sleep, I saw in a vision a vessel like a great cloth let down from heaven, and it came down to me:
6 Ref And looking on it with attention I saw in it all sorts of beasts and birds.
7 And a voice came to my ears saying, Come, Peter; take them for food.
8 Ref But I said, No, Lord; for nothing common or unclean has ever come into my mouth.
9 Ref But the voice, coming a second time from heaven, said, What God has made clean, do not you make common.
10 Ref And this was done three times, and they were all taken up again into heaven.
11 Ref And at that minute, three men, sent from Caesarea, came to the house where we were.
12 Ref And the Spirit gave me orders to go with them, doubting nothing. And these six brothers came with me; and we went into that man's house:
13 Ref And he gave us an account of how he had seen the angel in his house, saying, Send to Joppa, and get Simon, named Peter, to come to you;
14 Ref Who will say words to you through which you and all your family may get salvation.
15 Ref And, while I was talking to them, the Holy Spirit came on them, as on us at first.
16 Ref And the words of the Lord came into my mind, how he said, The baptism of John was with water, but you will have baptism with the Holy Spirit.
17 Ref If then God gave them, when they had faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, the same as he gave to us, who was I to go against God?
18 Ref And hearing these things they said nothing more, but gave glory to God, saying, Then to the Gentiles as to us has God given a change of heart, so that they may have life.
19 Ref Then those who had gone away at the time of the trouble about Stephen, went as far as Phoenicia and Cyprus, preaching to the Jews only.
20 Ref But some of them, men of Cyprus and Cyrene, when they came to Antioch, gave the good news about the Lord Jesus to the Greeks.
21 Ref And the power of the Lord was with them, and a great number had faith and were turned to the Lord.
22 Ref And news of them came to the ears of the church at Jerusalem: and they sent Barnabas as far as Antioch:
23 Ref Who, when he came and saw the grace of God, was glad; and he made clear to them the need of keeping near the Lord with all the strength of their hearts:
24 Ref For he was a good man and full of the Holy Spirit and of faith: and a great number were joined to the Lord.
25 Ref Then he went on to Tarsus, looking for Saul;
26 Ref And when he had come across him, he took him to Antioch. And they were with the church there for a year, teaching the people; and the disciples were first given the name of Christians in Antioch.
27 Ref Now in those days prophets came from Jerusalem to Antioch.
28 Ref And one of them, named Agabus, said publicly through the Spirit that there would be serious need of food all over the earth: which came about in the time of Claudius.
29 Ref And the disciples, everyone as he was able, made a decision to send help to the brothers living in Judaea:
30 Ref Which they did, sending it to the rulers of the church by the hand of Barnabas and Saul.
Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
1 Ref And the apostles and the brethren who are in Judea heard that also the nations did receive the word of God,
2 Ref and when Peter came up to Jerusalem, those of the circumcision were contending with him,
3 Ref saying -- `Unto men uncircumcised thou didst go in, and didst eat with them!'
4 Ref And Peter having begun, did expound to them in order saying,
5 Ref `I was in the city of Joppa praying, and I saw in a trance a vision, a certain vessel coming down, as a great sheet by four corners being let down out of the heaven, and it came unto me;
6 Ref at which having looked stedfastly, I was considering, and I saw the four-footed beasts of the earth, and the wild beasts, and the creeping things, and the fowls of heaven;
7 and I heard a voice saying to me, Having risen, Peter, slay and eat;
8 Ref and I said, Not so, Lord; because anything common or unclean hath at no time entered into my mouth;
9 Ref and a voice did answer me a second time out of the heaven, What God did cleanse, thou -- declare not thou common.
10 Ref `And this happened thrice, and again was all drawn up to the heaven,
11 Ref and, lo, immediately, three men stood at the house in which I was, having been sent from Cesarea unto me,
12 Ref and the Spirit said to me to go with them, nothing doubting, and these six brethren also went with me, and we did enter into the house of the man,
13 Ref he declared also to us how he saw the messenger in his house standing, and saying to him, Send men to Joppa, and call for Simon, who is surnamed Peter,
14 Ref who shall speak sayings by which thou shalt be saved, thou and all thy house.
15 Ref `And in my beginning to speak, the Holy Spirit did fall upon them, even as also upon us in the beginning,
16 Ref and I remembered the saying of the Lord, how he said, John indeed did baptize with water, and ye shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit;
17 Ref if then the equal gift God did give to them as also to us, having believed upon the Lord Jesus Christ, I -- how was I able to withstand God?'
18 Ref And they, having heard these things, were silent, and were glorifying God, saying, `Then, indeed, also to the nations did God give the reformation to life.'
19 Ref Those, indeed, therefore, having been scattered abroad, from the tribulation that came after Stephen, went through unto Phenice, and Cyprus, and Antioch, speaking the word to none except to Jews only;
20 Ref and there were certain of them men of Cyprus and Cyrene, who having entered into Antioch, were speaking unto the Hellenists, proclaiming good news -- the Lord Jesus,
21 Ref and the hand of the Lord was with them, a great number also, having believed, did turn unto the Lord.
22 Ref And the account was heard in the ears of the assembly that `is' in Jerusalem concerning them, and they sent forth Barnabas to go through unto Antioch,
23 Ref who, having come, and having seen the grace of God, was glad, and was exhorting all with purpose of heart to cleave to the Lord,
24 Ref because he was a good man, and full of the Holy Spirit, and of faith, and a great multitude was added to the Lord.
25 Ref And Barnabas went forth to Tarsus, to seek for Saul,
26 Ref and having found him, he brought him to Antioch, and it came to pass that they a whole year did assemble together in the assembly, and taught a great multitude, the disciples also were divinely called first in Antioch Christians.
27 Ref And in those days there came from Jerusalem prophets to Antioch,
28 Ref and one of them, by name Agabus, having stood up, did signify through the Spirit a great dearth is about to be throughout all the world -- which also came to pass in the time of Claudius Caesar --
29 Ref and the disciples, according as any one was prospering, determined each of them to send for ministration to the brethren dwelling in Judea,
30 Ref which also they did, having sent unto the elders by the hand of Barnabas and Saul.
