^{1 Ref} In earlier times he made the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali of small value, but after that he gave it glory, by the way of the sea, on the other side of Jordan, Galilee of the nations.

^{2 Ref} The people who went in the dark have seen a great light, and for those who were living in the land of the deepest night, the light is shining.

^{3 Ref} You have made them very glad, increasing their joy. They are glad before you as men are glad in the time of getting in the grain, or when they make division of the goods taken in war.

^{4 Ref} For by your hand the yoke on his neck and the rod on his back, even the rod of his cruel master, have been broken, as in the day of Midian.

^{5 Ref} For every boot of the man of war with his sounding step, and the clothing rolled in blood, will be for burning, food for the fire.

^{6 Ref} For to us a child has come, to us a son is given; and the government has been placed in his hands; and he has been named Wise Guide, Strong God, Father for ever, Prince of Peace.

^{7 Ref} Of the increase of his rule and of peace there will be no end, on the seat of David, and in his kingdom; to make it strong, supporting it with wise decision and righteousness, now and for ever. By the fixed purpose of the Lord of armies this will be done.

^{8 Ref} The Lord has sent a word to Jacob, and it has come on Israel;

^{9 Ref} And all the people will have experience of it, even Ephraim and the men of Samaria, who say in the pride of their uplifted hearts,

^{10 Ref} The bricks have come down, but we will put up buildings of cut stone in their place: the sycamores are cut down, but they will be changed to cedars.

^{11 Ref} For this cause the Lord has made strong the haters of Israel, driving them on to make war against him;

^{12 Ref} Aram on the east, and the Philistines on the west, who have come against Israel with open mouths. For all this his wrath is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

^{13 Ref} But the heart of the people was not turned to him who sent punishment on them, and they made no prayer to the Lord of armies.

^{14 Ref} For this cause the Lord took away from Israel head and tail, high and low, in one day.

^{15 Ref} The man who is honoured and responsible is the head, and the prophet who gives false teaching is the tail.

^{16 Ref} For the guides of this people are the cause of their wandering from the right way, and those who are guided by them come to destruction.

^{17 Ref} For this cause the Lord will have no pleasure in their young men, and no pity on their widows and the children without fathers: for they are all haters of God and evil-doers, and foolish words come from every mouth. For all this his wrath is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

^{18 Ref} For evil was burning like a fire; the blackberries and thorns were burned up; the thick woods took fire, rolling up in dark clouds of smoke.

^{19 Ref} The land was dark with the wrath of the Lord of armies: the people were like those who take men's flesh for food.

^{20 Ref} On the right a man was cutting off bits and was still in need; on the left a man took a meal but had not enough; no man had pity on his brother; every man was making a meal of the flesh of his neighbour.

^{21 Ref} Manasseh was making a meal of Ephraim, and Ephraim of Manasseh; and together they were attacking Judah. For all this his wrath is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

^{2 Ref} The people who are walking in darkness Have seen a great light, Dwellers in a land of death-shade, Light hath shone upon them.

^{3 Ref} Thou hast multiplied the nation, Thou hast made great its joy, They have joyed before Thee as the joy in harvest, As `men' rejoice in their apportioning spoil.

^{4 Ref} Because the yoke of its burden, And the staff of its shoulder, the rod of its exactor, Thou hast broken as `in' the day of Midian.

^{5 Ref} For every battle of a warrior `is' with rushing, and raiment rolled in blood, And it hath been for burning -- fuel of fire.

^{6 Ref} For a Child hath been born to us, A Son hath been given to us, And the princely power is on his shoulder, And He doth call his name Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Father of Eternity, Prince of Peace.

^{7 Ref} To the increase of the princely power, And of peace, there is no end, On the throne of David, and on his kingdom, To establish it, and to support it, In judgment and in righteousness, Henceforth, even unto the age, The zeal of Jehovah of Hosts doth this.

^{8 Ref} A word hath the Lord sent into Jacob, And it hath fallen in Israel.

^{9 Ref} And the people have known -- all of it, Ephraim, and the inhabitant of Samaria, In pride and in greatness of heart, saying,

^{10 Ref} `Bricks have fallen, and hewn work we build, Sycamores have been cut down, and cedars we renew.'

^{11 Ref} And Jehovah setteth the adversaries of Rezin on high above him, And his enemies he joineth together,

^{12 Ref} Aram from before, and Philistia from behind, And they devour Israel with the whole mouth. With all this not turned back hath His anger, And still His hand is stretched out.

^{13 Ref} And the people hath not turned back unto Him who is smiting it, And Jehovah of Hosts they have not sought.

^{14 Ref} And Jehovah cutteth off from Israel head and tail, Branch and reed -- the same day,

^{15 Ref} Elder, and accepted of face, he `is' the head, Prophet, teacher of falsehood, he `is' the tail.

^{16 Ref} And the eulogists of this people are causing to err, And its eulogised ones are consumed.

^{17 Ref} Therefore, over its young men the Lord rejoiceth not, And its orphans, and its widows He pitieth not, For every one `is' profane, and an evil doer, And every mouth is speaking folly. With all this not turned back hath His anger, And still His hand is stretched out.

^{18 Ref} For burned as a fire hath wickedness, Brier and thorn it devoureth, And it kindleth in thickets of the forest, And they lift themselves up, an exaltation of smoke!

^{19 Ref} In the wrath of Jehovah of Hosts Hath the land been consumed, And the people is as fuel of fire; A man on his brother hath no pity,

^{20 Ref} And cutteth down on the right, and hath been hungry, And he devoureth on the left, And they have not been satisfied, Each the flesh of his own arm they devour.

^{21 Ref} Manasseh -- Ephraim, and Ephraim -- Manasseh, Together they `are' against Judah, With all this not turned back hath His anger. And still His hand is stretched out!

^{1 Ref} But there shall be no gloom to her that was in anguish. In the former time he brought into contempt the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali; but in the latter time hath he made it glorious, by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the nations.

^{2 Ref} The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light: they that dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

^{3 Ref} Thou hast multiplied the nation, thou hast increased their joy: they joy before thee according to the joy in harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

^{4 Ref} For the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, thou hast broken as in the day of Midian.

^{5 Ref} For all the armor of the armed man in the tumult, and the garments rolled in blood, shall be for burning, for fuel of fire.

^{6 Ref} For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

^{7 Ref} Of the increase of his government and of peace there shall be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from henceforth even for ever. The zeal of Jehovah of hosts will perform this.

^{8 Ref} The Lord sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel.

^{9 Ref} And all the people shall know, `even' Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in pride and in stoutness of heart,

^{10 Ref} The bricks are fallen, but we will build with hewn stone; the sycomores are cut down, but we will put cedars in their place.

^{11 Ref} Therefore Jehovah will set up on high against him the adversaries of Rezin, and will stir up his enemies,

^{12 Ref} the Syrians before, and the Philistines behind; and they shall devour Israel with open mouth. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

^{13 Ref} Yet the people have not turned unto him that smote them, neither have they sought Jehovah of hosts.

^{14 Ref} Therefore Jehovah will cut off from Israel head and tail, palm-branch and rush, in one day.

^{15 Ref} The elder and the honorable man, he is the head; and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail.

^{16 Ref} For they that lead this people cause them to err; and they that are led of them are destroyed.

^{17 Ref} Therefore the Lord will not rejoice over their young men, neither will he have compassion on their fatherless and widows; for every one is profane and an evil-doer, and every mouth speaketh folly. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.

^{18 Ref} For wickedness burneth as the fire; it devoureth the briers and thorns; yea, it kindleth in the thickets of the forest, and they roll upward in a column of smoke.

^{19 Ref} Through the wrath of Jehovah of hosts is the land burnt up; and the people are as the fuel of fire: no man spareth his brother.

^{20 Ref} And one shall snatch on the right hand, and be hungry; and he shall eat on the left hand, and they shall not be satisfied: they shall eat every man the flesh of his own arm:

^{21 Ref} Manasseh, Ephraim; and Ephraim, Manasseh; and they together shall be against Judah. For all this his anger is not turned away, but his hand is stretched out still.
