2 Peter 1

Bible in Basic English (BBE)

1 Ref Simon Peter, a servant and Apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who with us have a part in the same holy faith in the righteousness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ:

2 Ref May grace and peace ever be increasing in you, in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord;

3 Ref Because by his power he has given us everything necessary for life and righteousness, through the knowledge of him who has been our guide by his glory and virtue;

4 Ref And through this he has given us the hope of great rewards highly to be valued; so that by them we might have our part in God's being, and be made free from the destruction which is in the world through the desires of the flesh.

5 Ref So, for this very cause, take every care; joining virtue to faith, and knowledge to virtue,

6 Ref And self-control to knowledge, and a quiet mind to self-control, and fear of God to a quiet mind,

7 Ref And love of the brothers to fear of God, and to love of the brothers, love itself.

8 Ref For if you have these things in good measure, they will make you fertile and full of fruit in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

9 Ref For the man who has not these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having no memory of how he was made clean from his old sins.

10 Ref For this reason, my brothers, take all the more care to make your selection and approval certain; for if you do these things you will never have a fall:

11 Ref For so the way will be open to you into the eternal kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

12 Ref For this reason I will be ready at all times to keep your memory of these things awake, though you have the knowledge of them now and are well based in your present faith.

13 Ref And it seems right to me, as long as I am in this tent of flesh, to keep your minds awake by working on your memory;

14 Ref For I am conscious that in a short time I will have to put off this tent of flesh, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me.

15 Ref And I will take every care so that you may have a clear memory of these things after my death.

16 Ref For when we gave you news of the power and the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, our teaching was not based on stories put together by art, but we were eye-witnesses of his glory.

17 Ref For God the Father gave him honour and glory, when such a voice came to him out of the great glory, saying, This is my dearly loved Son, with whom I am well pleased.

18 Ref And this voice came from heaven even to our ears, when we were with him on the holy mountain.

19 Ref And so the words of the prophets are made more certain; and it is well for you to give attention to them as to a light shining in a dark place, till the dawn comes and the morning star is seen in your hearts;

20 Ref Being conscious in the first place that no man by himself may give a special sense to the words of the prophets.

21 Ref For these words did not ever come through the impulse of men: but the prophets had them from God, being moved by the Holy Spirit.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Ref Simeon Peter, a servant and an apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who did obtain a like precious faith with us in the righteousness of our God and Saviour Jesus Christ:

2 Ref Grace to you, and peace be multiplied in the acknowledgement of God and of Jesus our Lord!

3 Ref As all things to us His divine power (the things pertaining unto life and piety) hath given, through the acknowledgement of him who did call us through glory and worthiness,

4 Ref through which to us the most great and precious promises have been given, that through these ye may become partakers of a divine nature, having escaped from the corruption in the world in desires.

5 Ref And this same also -- all diligence having brought in besides, superadd in your faith the worthiness, and in the worthiness the knowledge,

6 Ref and in the knowledge the temperance, and in the temperance the endurance, and in the endurance the piety,

7 Ref and in the piety the brotherly kindness, and in the brotherly kindness the love;

8 Ref for these things being to you and abounding, do make `you' neither inert nor unfruitful in regard to the acknowledging of our Lord Jesus Christ,

9 Ref for he with whom these things are not present is blind, dim-sighted, having become forgetful of the cleansing of his old sins;

10 Ref wherefore, the rather, brethren, be diligent to make stedfast your calling and choice, for these things doing, ye may never stumble,

11 Ref for so, richly shall be superadded to you the entrance into the age-during reign of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

12 Ref Wherefore, I will not be careless always to remind you concerning these things, though, having known them, and having been established in the present truth,

13 Ref and I think right, so long as I am in this tabernacle, to stir you up in reminding `you',

14 Ref having known that soon is the laying aside of my tabernacle, even as also our Lord Jesus Christ did shew to me,

15 Ref and I will be diligent that also at every time ye have, after my outgoing, power to make to yourselves the remembrance of these things.

16 Ref For, skilfully devised fables not having followed out, we did make known to you the power and presence of our Lord Jesus Christ, but eye-witnesses having become of his majesty --

17 Ref for having received from God the Father honour and glory, such a voice being borne to him by the excellent glory: `This is My Son -- the beloved, in whom I was well pleased;'

18 Ref and this voice we -- we did hear, out of heaven borne, being with him in the holy mount.

19 Ref And we have more firm the prophetic word, to which we do well giving heed, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, till day may dawn, and a morning star may arise -- in your hearts;

20 Ref this first knowing, that no prophecy of the Writing doth come of private exposition,

21 Ref for not by will of man did ever prophecy come, but by the Holy Spirit borne on holy men of God spake.

World English Bible (WEB)

1 Ref Simon Peter, a servant and apostle of Jesus Christ, to those who have obtained a like precious faith with us in the righteousness of our God and Savior, Jesus Christ:

2 Ref Grace to you and peace be multiplied in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord,

3 Ref seeing that his divine power has granted to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and virtue;

4 Ref by which he has granted to us his precious and exceedingly great promises; that through these you may become partakers of the divine nature, having escaped from the corruption that is in the world by lust.

5 Ref Yes, and for this very cause adding on your part all diligence, in your faith supply moral excellence; and in moral excellence, knowledge;

6 Ref and in knowledge, self-control; and in self-control patience; and in patience godliness;

7 Ref and in godliness brotherly affection; and in brotherly affection, love.

8 Ref For if these things are yours and abound, they make you to be not idle nor unfruitful to the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ.

9 Ref For he who lacks these things is blind, seeing only what is near, having forgotten the cleansing from his old sins.

10 Ref Therefore, brothers,{The word for "brothers" here and where context allows may also be correctly translated "brothers and sisters" or "siblings."} be more diligent to make your calling and election sure. For if you do these things, you will never stumble.

11 Ref For thus will be richly supplied to you the entrance into the eternal Kingdom of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.

12 Ref Therefore I will not be negligent to remind you of these things, though you know them, and are established in the present truth.

13 Ref I think it right, as long as I am in this tent, to stir you up by reminding you;

14 Ref knowing that the putting off of my tent comes swiftly, even as our Lord Jesus Christ made clear to me.

15 Ref Yes, I will make every effort that you may always be able to remember these things even after my departure.

16 Ref For we did not follow cunningly devised fables, when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of his majesty.

17 Ref For he received from God the Father honor and glory, when the voice came to him from the Majestic Glory, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased."

18 Ref This voice we heard come out of heaven when we were with him in the holy mountain.

19 Ref We have the more sure word of prophecy; whereunto you do well that you take heed, as to a lamp shining in a dark place, until the day dawns, and the day star arises in your hearts:

20 Ref knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of private interpretation.

21 Ref For no prophecy ever came by the will of man: but holy men of God spoke, being moved by the Holy Spirit.
