John 18

Bible in Basic English (BBE)

1 Ref When Jesus had said these words he went out with his disciples over the stream Kedron to a garden, into which he went with his disciples.

2 Ref And Judas, who was false to him, had knowledge of the place because Jesus went there frequently with his disciples.

3 Ref So Judas, getting a band of armed men and police from the chief priests and Pharisees, went there with lights and with arms.

4 Ref Then Jesus, having knowledge of everything which was coming on him, went forward and said to them, Who are you looking for?

5 Ref Their answer was, Jesus the Nazarene. Jesus said, I am he. And Judas, who was false to him, was there at their side.

6 Ref And when he said to them, I am he, they went back, falling to the earth.

7 Ref So again he put the question to them, Who are you looking for? And they said, Jesus the Nazarene.

8 Ref Jesus made answer, I have said that I am he; if you are looking for me, let these men go away.

9 Ref (He said this so that his words might come true, I have kept safe all those whom you gave to me.)

10 Ref Then Simon Peter, who had a sword, took it out and gave the high priest's servant a blow, cutting off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.

11 Ref Then Jesus said to Peter, Put back your sword: am I not to take the cup which my Father has given to me?

12 Ref Then the band and the chief captain and the police took Jesus and put cords round him.

13 Ref They took him first to Annas, because Annas was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was the high priest that year.

14 Ref It was Caiaphas who had said to the Jews that it was in their interest for one man to be put to death for the people.

15 Ref And Simon Peter went after Jesus with another disciple. Now that disciple was a friend of the high priest and he went in with Jesus into the house of the high priest;

16 Ref But Peter was kept outside at the door. Then this other disciple, who was a friend of the high priest, came out and had a word with the girl who kept the door, and took Peter in.

17 Ref Then the girl who was the door-keeper said to Peter, Are you not one of this man's disciples? In answer he said, I am not.

18 Ref Now the servants and the police had made a fire of coals because it was cold; they were warming themselves in front of it and Peter was there with them, warming himself.

19 Ref Then the high priest put questions to Jesus about his disciples and his teaching.

20 Ref Jesus made answer, I said things openly to the world at all times; I have given my teaching in the Synagogues and in the Temple to which all the Jews come; and I have said nothing secretly.

21 Ref Why are you questioning me? put questions to my hearers about what I have said to them: they have knowledge of what I said.

22 Ref When he said this, one of the police by his side gave him a blow with his open hand, saying, Do you give such an answer to the high priest?

23 Ref Jesus said in answer, If I have said anything evil, give witness to the evil: but if I said what is true, why do you give me blows?

24 Ref Then Annas sent him chained to Caiaphas, the high priest.

25 Ref But Simon Peter was still there warming himself by the fire. They said to him, Are you not one of his disciples? He said, No, I am not.

26 Ref One of the servants of the high priest, a relation of him whose ear had been cut off by Peter, said, Did I not see you with him in the garden?

27 Ref Then again Peter said, No. And straight away a cock gave its cry.

28 Ref So they took Jesus from the house of Caiaphas to the Praetorium. It was early. They themselves did not go into the Praetorium, so that they might not become unclean, but might take the Passover.

29 Ref So Pilate came out to them and put the question: What have you to say against this man?

30 Ref They said to him in answer, If the man was not a wrongdoer we would not have given him up to you.

31 Ref Then Pilate said to them, Take him yourselves and let him be judged by your law. But the Jews said to him, We have no right to put any man to death.

32 Ref (That the word of Jesus might come true, pointing to the sort of death he would have.)

33 Ref Then Pilate went back into the Praetorium and sent for Jesus and said to him, Are you the King of the Jews?

34 Jesus made answer, Do you say this of yourself, or did others say it about me?

35 Ref Pilate said, Am I a Jew? Your nation and the chief priests have given you into my hands: what have you done?

36 Ref Jesus said in answer, My kingdom is not of this world: if my kingdom was of this world, my disciples would have made a good fight to keep me out of the hands of the Jews: but my kingdom is not here.

37 Ref Then Pilate said to him, Are you then a king? Jesus made answer, You say that I am a king. For this purpose was I given birth, and for this purpose I came into the world, that I might give witness to what is true. Every lover of what is true gives ear to my voice.

38 Ref Pilate said to him, True? what is true? Having said this he went out again to the Jews and said to them, I see no wrong in him.

39 Ref But every year you make a request to me to let a prisoner go free at the Passover. Is it your desire that I let the King of the Jews go free?

40 Ref Then again they gave a loud cry, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was an outlaw.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Ref These things having said, Jesus went forth with his disciples beyond the brook of Kedron, where was a garden, into which he entered, himself and his disciples,

2 Ref and Judas also, who delivered him up, had known the place, because many times did Jesus assemble there with his disciples.

3 Ref Judas, therefore, having taken the band and officers out of the chief priests and Pharisees, doth come thither with torches and lamps, and weapons;

4 Ref Jesus, therefore, knowing all things that are coming upon him, having gone forth, said to them, `Whom do ye seek?'

5 Ref they answered him, `Jesus the Nazarene;' Jesus saith to them, `I am `he';' -- and Judas who delivered him up was standing with them; --

6 Ref when, therefore, he said to them -- `I am `he',' they went away backward, and fell to the ground.

7 Ref Again, therefore, he questioned them, `Whom do ye seek?' and they said, `Jesus the Nazarene;'

8 Ref Jesus answered, `I said to you that I am `he'; if, then, me ye seek, suffer these to go away;'

9 Ref that the word might be fulfilled that he said -- `Those whom Thou hast given to me, I did not lose of them even one.'

10 Ref Simon Peter, therefore, having a sword, drew it, and struck the chief priest's servant, and cut off his right ear -- and the name of the servant was Malchus --

11 Ref Jesus, therefore, said to Peter, `Put the sword into the sheath; the cup that the Father hath given to me, may I not drink it?'

12 Ref The band, therefore, and the captain, and the officers of the Jews, took hold on Jesus, and bound him,

13 Ref and they led him away to Annas first, for he was father-in-law of Caiaphas, who was chief priest of that year,

14 Ref and Caiaphas was he who gave counsel to the Jews, that it is good for one man to perish for the people.

15 Ref And following Jesus was Simon Peter, and the other disciple, and that disciple was known to the chief priest, and he entered with Jesus to the hall of the chief priest,

16 Ref and Peter was standing at the door without, therefore went forth the other disciple who was known to the chief priest, and he spake to the female keeping the door, and he brought in Peter.

17 Ref Then said the maid keeping the door to Peter, `Art thou also of the disciples of this man?' he saith, `I am not;'

18 Ref and the servants and the officers were standing, having made a fire of coals, because it was cold, and they were warming themselves, and Peter was standing with them, and warming himself.

19 Ref The chief priests, therefore, questioned Jesus concerning his disciples, and concerning his teaching;

20 Ref Jesus answered him, `I spake freely to the world, I did always teach in a synagogue, and in the temple, where the Jews do always come together; and in secret I spake nothing;

21 Ref why me dost thou question? question those having heard what I spake to them; lo, these have known what I said.'

22 Ref And he having said these things, one of the officers standing by did give Jesus a slap, saying, `Thus dost thou answer the chief priest?'

23 Ref Jesus answered him, `If I spake ill, testify concerning the ill; and if well, why me dost thou smite?'

24 Ref Annas then sent him bound to Caiaphas the chief priest.

25 Ref And Simon Peter was standing and warming himself, they said then to him, `Art thou also of his disciples?' he denied, and said, `I am not.'

26 Ref One of the servants of the chief priest, being kinsman of him whose ear Peter cut off, saith, `Did not I see thee in the garden with him?'

27 Ref again, therefore, Peter denied, and immediately a cock crew.

28 Ref They led, therefore, Jesus from Caiaphas to the praetorium, and it was early, and they themselves did not enter into the praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but that they might eat the passover;

29 Ref Pilate, therefore, went forth unto them, and said, `What accusation do ye bring against this man?'

30 Ref they answered and said to him, `If he were not an evil doer, we had not delivered him to thee.'

31 Ref Pilate, therefore, said to them, `Take ye him -- ye -- and according to your law judge him;' the Jews, therefore, said to him, `It is not lawful to us to put any one to death;'

32 Ref that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled which he said, signifying by what death he was about to die.

33 Ref Pilate, therefore, entered into the praetorium again, and called Jesus, and said to him, `Thou art the King of the Jews?'

34 Jesus answered him, `From thyself dost thou say this? or did others say it to thee about me?'

35 Ref Pilate answered, `Am I a Jew? thy nation, and the chief priests did deliver thee up to me; what didst thou?'

36 Ref Jesus answered, `My kingdom is not of this world; if my kingdom were of this world, my officers had struggled that I might not be delivered up to Jews; but now my kingdom is not from hence.'

37 Ref Pilate, therefore, said to him, `Art thou then a king?' Jesus answered, `Thou dost say `it'; because a king I am, I for this have been born, and for this I have come to the world, that I may testify to the truth; every one who is of the truth, doth hear my voice.'

38 Ref Pilate saith to him, `What is truth?' and this having said, again he went forth unto the Jews, and saith to them, `I do find no fault in him;

39 Ref and ye have a custom that I shall release to you one in the passover; will ye, therefore, `that' I shall release to you the king of the Jews?'

40 Ref therefore they all cried out again, saying, `Not this one -- but Barabbas;' and Barabbas was a robber.

World English Bible (WEB)

1 Ref When Jesus had spoken these words, he went out with his disciples over the brook Kidron, where was a garden, into which he and his disciples entered.

2 Ref Now Judas, who betrayed him, also knew the place, for Jesus often resorted there with his disciples.

3 Ref Judas then, having taken a detachment of soldiers and officers from the chief priests and the Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.

4 Ref Jesus therefore, knowing all the things that were happening to him, went forth, and said to them, "Who are you looking for?"

5 Ref They answered him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, "I AM." Judas also, who betrayed him, was standing with them.

6 Ref When therefore he said to them, "I AM," they went backward, and fell to the ground.

7 Ref Again therefore he asked them, "Who are you looking for?" They said, "Jesus of Nazareth."

8 Ref Jesus answered, "I told you that I AM. If therefore you seek me, let these go their way,"

9 Ref that the word might be fulfilled which he spoke, "Of those whom you have given me, I have lost none."

10 Ref Simon Peter therefore, having a sword, drew it, and struck the high priest's servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant's name was Malchus.

11 Ref Jesus therefore said to Peter, "Put the sword into its sheath. The cup which the Father has given me, shall I not surely drink it?"

12 Ref So the detachment, the commanding officer, and the officers of the Jews, seized Jesus and bound him,

13 Ref and led him to Annas first, for he was father-in-law to Caiaphas, who was high priest that year.

14 Ref Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should perish for the people.

15 Ref Simon Peter followed Jesus, as did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and entered in with Jesus into the court of the high priest;

16 Ref but Peter was standing at the door outside. So the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought in Peter.

17 Ref Then the maid who kept the door said to Peter, "Are you also one of this man's disciples?" He said, "I am not."

18 Ref Now the servants and the officers were standing there, having made a fire of coals, for it was cold. They were warming themselves. Peter was with them, standing and warming himself.

19 Ref The high priest therefore asked Jesus about his disciples, and about his teaching.

20 Ref Jesus answered him, "I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues, and in the temple, where the Jews always meet. I said nothing in secret.

21 Ref Why do you ask me? Ask those who have heard me what I said to them. Behold, these know the things which I said."

22 Ref When he had said this, one of the officers standing by slapped Jesus with his hand, saying, "Do you answer the high priest like that?"

23 Ref Jesus answered him, "If I have spoken evil, testify of the evil; but if well, why do you beat me?"

24 Ref Annas sent him bound to Caiaphas, the high priest.

25 Ref Now Simon Peter was standing and warming himself. They said therefore to him, "You aren't also one of his disciples, are you?" He denied it, and said, "I am not."

26 Ref One of the servants of the high priest, being a relative of him whose ear Peter had cut off, said, "Didn't I see you in the garden with him?"

27 Ref Peter therefore denied it again, and immediately the rooster crowed.

28 Ref They led Jesus therefore from Caiaphas into the Praetorium. It was early, and they themselves didn't enter into the Praetorium, that they might not be defiled, but might eat the Passover.

29 Ref Pilate therefore went out to them, and said, "What accusation do you bring against this man?"

30 Ref They answered him, "If this man weren't an evildoer, we wouldn't have delivered him up to you."

31 Ref Pilate therefore said to them, "Take him yourselves, and judge him according to your law." Therefore the Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,"

32 Ref that the word of Jesus might be fulfilled, which he spoke, signifying by what kind of death he should die.

33 Ref Pilate therefore entered again into the Praetorium, called Jesus, and said to him, "Are you the King of the Jews?"

34 Jesus answered him, "Do you say this by yourself, or did others tell you about me?"

35 Ref Pilate answered, "I'm not a Jew, am I? Your own nation and the chief priests delivered you to me. What have you done?"

36 Ref Jesus answered, "My Kingdom is not of this world. If my Kingdom were of this world, then my servants would fight, that I wouldn't be delivered to the Jews. But now my Kingdom is not from here."

37 Ref Pilate therefore said to him, "Are you a king then?" Jesus answered, "You say that I am a king. For this reason I have been born, and for this reason I have come into the world, that I should testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice."

38 Ref Pilate said to him, "What is truth?" When he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, "I find no basis for a charge against him.

39 Ref But you have a custom, that I should release someone to you at the Passover. Therefore do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?"

40 Ref Then they all shouted again, saying, "Not this man, but Barabbas!" Now Barabbas was a robber.
