Numbers 21

Bible in Basic English (BBE)

1 Ref And it came to the ears of the Canaanite, the king of Arad, living in the South, that Israel was coming by the way of Atharim, and he came out against them and took some of them prisoners.

2 Ref Then Israel made an oath to the Lord, and said, If you will give up this people into my hands, then I will send complete destruction on all their towns.

3 Ref And the Lord, in answer to the voice of Israel, gave the Canaanites up to them; and they put them and their towns completely to destruction: and that place was named Hormah.

4 Ref Then they went on from Mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea, going round the land of Edom: and the spirit of the people was overcome with weariness on the way.

5 Ref And crying out against God and against Moses, they said, Why have you taken us out of Egypt to come to our death in the waste land? For there is no bread and no water, and this poor bread is disgusting to us.

6 Ref Then the Lord sent poison-snakes among the people; and their bites were a cause of death to numbers of the people of Israel.

7 Ref Then the people came to Moses and said, We have done wrong in crying out against the Lord and against you: make prayer to the Lord to take away the snakes from us. So Moses made prayer for the people.

8 Ref And the Lord said to Moses, Make an image of a snake and put it on a rod, and anyone who has been wounded by the snakes, looking on it will be made well.

9 Ref So Moses made a snake of brass and put it on a rod; and anyone who had a snakebite, after looking on the snake of brass, was made well.

10 Ref Then the children of Israel went on and put up their tents in Oboth.

11 And journeying on again from Oboth, they put up their tents in Iye-abarim, in the waste land before Moab looking east.

12 Ref And moving on from there, they put up their tents in the valley of Zered.

13 Ref From there they went on and put up their tents on the other side of the Arnon, which is on the waste land at the edge of the land of the Amorites; for the Arnon is the line of division between Moab and the Amorites:

14 Ref As it says in the book of the Wars of the Lord, Vaheb in Suphah, and the valley of the Amon;

15 Ref The slope of the valleys going down to the tents of Ar and touching the edge of Moab.

16 Ref From there they went on to Beer, the water-spring of which the Lord said to Moses, Make the people come together and I will give them water.

17 Ref Then Israel gave voice to this song: Come up, O water-spring, let us make a song to it:

18 Ref The fountain made by the chiefs, made deep by the great ones of the people, with the law-givers' rod, and with their sticks. Then from the waste land they went on to Mattanah:

19 And from Mattanah to Nahaliel: and from Nahaliel to Bamoth:

20 Ref And from Bamoth to the valley in the open country of Moab, and to the top of Pisgah looking over Jeshimon.

21 Ref And Israel sent men to Sihon, king of the Amorites, saying,

22 Ref Let me go through your land: we will not go into field or vine-garden, or take the water of the springs; we will go by the highway till we have gone past the limits of your land.

23 Ref And Sihon would not let Israel go through his land; but got all his people together and went out against Israel into the waste land, as far as Jahaz, to make war on Israel.

24 Ref But Israel overcame him, and took all his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the country of the children of Ammon, for the country of the children of Ammon was strongly armed.

25 Ref And Israel took all their towns, living in Heshbon and all the towns and small places of the Amorites.

26 For Heshbon was the town of Sihon, king of the Amorites, who had made war against an earlier king of Moab and taken from him all his land as far as the Arnon.

27 Ref So the makers of wise sayings say, Come to Heshbon, building up the town of Sihon and making it strong:

28 Ref For a fire has gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the town of Sihon: for the destruction of Ar in Moab, and the lords of the high places of the Arnon.

29 Ref Sorrow is yours, O Moab! Destruction is your fate, O people of Chemosh: his sons have gone in flight, and his daughters are prisoners, in the hands of Sihon, king of the Amorites.

30 Ref They are wounded with our arrows; destruction has come on Heshbon, even to Dibon; and we have made the land waste as far as Nophah, stretching out to Medeba.

31 Ref So Israel put up their tents in the land of the Amorites.

32 Ref And Moses sent men secretly to Jazer, and they took its towns, driving out the Amorites who were living there.

33 Ref Then turning they went up by the way of Bashan; and Og, king of Bashan, went out against them with all his people, to the fight at Edrei.

34 Ref And the Lord said to Moses, Have no fear of him: for I have given him up into your hands, with all his people and his land; do to him as you did to Sihon, king of the Amorites, at Heshbon.

35 Ref So they overcame him and his sons and his people, driving them all out: and they took his land for their heritage.

10 Ref And the sons of Israel journey, and encamp in Oboth.

11 And they journey from Oboth, and encamp in Ije-Abarim, in the wilderness that `is' on the front of Moab, at the rising of the sun.

25 Ref And Israel taketh all these cities, and Israel dwelleth in all the cities of the Amorite, in Heshbon, and in all its villages;

26 for Heshbon is a city of Sihon king of the Amorite, and he hath fought against the former king of Moab, and taketh all his land out of his hand, unto Arnon;

27 Ref therefore those using similes say -- `Enter ye Heshbon, Let the city of Sihon be built and ready,

28 Ref For fire hath gone out from Heshbon, A flame from the city of Sihon, It hath consumed Ar of Moab, Owners of the high places of Arnon.

2 Ref Israel vowed a vow to Yahweh, and said, If you will indeed deliver this people into my hand, then I will utterly destroy their cities.

3 Ref Yahweh listened to the voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed them and their cities: and the name of the place was called Hormah.

4 Ref They traveled from Mount Hor by the way to the Red Sea, to compass the land of Edom: and the soul of the people was much discouraged because of the way.

5 Ref The people spoke against God, and against Moses, Why have you brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? for there is no bread, and there is no water; and our soul loathes this light bread.

6 Ref Yahweh sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

7 Ref The people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, because we have spoken against Yahweh, and against you; pray to Yahweh, that he take away the serpents from us. Moses prayed for the people.

8 Ref Yahweh said to Moses, Make you a fiery serpent, and set it on a standard: and it shall happen, that everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.

9 Ref Moses made a serpent of brass, and set it on the standard: and it happened, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked to the serpent of brass, he lived.

10 Ref The children of Israel traveled, and encamped in Oboth.

11 They traveled from Oboth, and encamped at Iyeabarim, in the wilderness which is before Moab, toward the sunrise.

12 Ref From there they traveled, and encamped in the valley of Zered.

13 Ref From there they traveled, and encamped on the other side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness, that comes out of the border of the Amorites: for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorites.

14 Ref Therefore it is said in the book of the Wars of Yahweh, Vaheb in Suphah, The valleys of the Arnon,

15 Ref The slope of the valleys That inclines toward the dwelling of Ar, Leans on the border of Moab.

16 Ref From there they traveled to Beer: that is the well of which Yahweh said to Moses, Gather the people together, and I will give them water.

17 Ref Then sang Israel this song: Spring up, well; sing you to it:

18 Ref The well, which the princes dug, Which the nobles of the people dug, With the scepter, [and] with their poles. From the wilderness [they traveled] to Mattanah;

19 and from Mattanah to Nahaliel; and from Nahaliel to Bamoth;

20 Ref and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the field of Moab, to the top of Pisgah, which looks down on the desert.

21 Ref Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorites, saying,

22 Ref Let me pass through your land: we will not turn aside into field, or into vineyard; we will not drink of the water of the wells: we will go by the king's highway, until we have passed your border.

23 Ref Sihon would not allow Israel to pass through his border: but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel into the wilderness, and came to Jahaz; and he fought against Israel.

24 Ref Israel struck him with the edge of the sword, and possessed his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, even to the children of Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was strong.

25 Ref Israel took all these cities: and Israel lived in all the cities of the Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the towns of it.

26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even to the Arnon.

27 Ref Therefore those who speak in proverbs say, Come you to Heshbon; Let the city of Sihon be built and established:

28 Ref For a fire is gone out of Heshbon, A flame from the city of Sihon: It has devoured Ar of Moab, The lords of the high places of the Arnon.

29 Ref Woe to you, Moab! You are undone, people of Chemosh: He has given his sons as fugitives, His daughters into captivity, To Sihon king of the Amorites.

30 Ref We have shot at them; Heshbon is perished even to Dibon, We have laid waste even to Nophah, Which [reaches] to Medeba.

31 Ref Thus Israel lived in the land of the Amorites.

32 Ref Moses sent to spy out Jazer; and they took the towns of it, and drove out the Amorites who were there.

33 Ref They turned and went up by the way of Bashan: and Og the king of Bashan went out against them, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei.

34 Ref Yahweh said to Moses, Don't fear him: for I have delivered him into your hand, and all his people, and his land; and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived at Heshbon.

35 Ref So they struck him, and his sons and all his people, until there was none left him remaining: and they possessed his land.
