^{1 Ref} Then came together unto him the Pharisees, and certain of the scribes, which came from Jerusalem.

^{2 Ref} And when they saw some of his disciples eat bread with defiled, that is to say, with unwashen, hands, they found fault.

^{3 Ref} For the Pharisees, and all the Jews, except they wash their hands oft, eat not, holding the tradition of the elders.

^{4 Ref} And when they come from the market, except they wash, they eat not. And many other things there be, which they have received to hold, as the washing of cups, and pots, brasen vessels, and of tables.

^{5 Ref} Then the Pharisees and scribes asked him, Why walk not thy disciples according to the tradition of the elders, but eat bread with unwashen hands?

^{6 Ref} He answered and said unto them, Well hath Esaias prophesied of you hypocrites, as it is written, This people honoureth me with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

^{7 Ref} Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

^{8 Ref} For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

^{9 Ref} And he said unto them, Full well ye reject the commandment of God, that ye may keep your own tradition.

^{10 Ref} For Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, Whoso curseth father or mother, let him die the death:

^{11 Ref} But ye say, If a man shall say to his father or mother, It is Corban, that is to say, a gift, by whatsoever thou mightest be profited by me; he shall be free.

¹² And ye suffer him no more to do ought for his father or his mother;

^{13 Ref} Making the word of God of none effect through your tradition, which ye have delivered: and many such like things do ye.

^{14 Ref} And when he had called all the people unto him, he said unto them, Hearken unto me every one of you, and understand:

^{15 Ref} There is nothing from without a man, that entering into him can defile him: but the things which come out of him, those are they that defile the man.

¹⁶ If any man have ears to hear, let him hear.

^{17 Ref} And when he was entered into the house from the people, his disciples asked him concerning the parable.

^{18 Ref} And he saith unto them, Are ye so without understanding also? Do ye not perceive, that whatsoever thing from without entereth into the man, it cannot defile him;

^{19 Ref} Because it entereth not into his heart, but into the belly, and goeth out into the draught, purging all meats?

^{20 Ref} And he said, That which cometh out of the man, that defileth the man.

^{21 Ref} For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,

^{22 Ref} Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:

^{23 Ref} All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

^{24 Ref} And from thence he arose, and went into the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and entered into an house, and would have no man know it: but he could not be hid.

^{25 Ref} For a certain woman, whose young daughter had an unclean spirit, heard of him, and came and fell at his feet:

^{26 Ref} The woman was a Greek, a Syrophenician by nation; and she besought him that he would cast forth the devil out of her daughter.

^{27 Ref} But Jesus said unto her, Let the children first be filled: for it is not meet to take the children's bread, and to cast it unto the dogs.

^{28 Ref} And she answered and said unto him, Yes, Lord: yet the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs.

^{29 Ref} And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the devil is gone out of thy daughter.

^{30 Ref} And when she was come to her house, she found the devil gone out, and her daughter laid upon the bed.

^{31 Ref} And again, departing from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis.

^{32 Ref} And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to put his hand upon him.

^{33 Ref} And he took him aside from the multitude, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spit, and touched his tongue;

^{34 Ref} And looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.

^{35 Ref} And straightway his ears were opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.

^{36 Ref} And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it;

^{37 Ref} And were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well: he maketh both the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.

^{15 Ref} there is nothing from without the man, that going into him can defile him; but the things which proceed out of the man are those that defile the man.

¹⁶ `If any man hath ears to hear, let him hear.'

^{17 Ref} And when he was entered into the house from the multitude, his disciples asked of him the parable.

^{28 Ref} But she answered and saith unto him, Yea, Lord; even the dogs under the table eat of the children's crumbs.

^{29 Ref} And he said unto her, For this saying go thy way; the demon is gone out of thy daughter.

^{30 Ref} And she went away unto her house, and found the child laid upon the bed, and the demon gone out.

^{31 Ref} And again he went out from the borders of Tyre, and came through Sidon unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the borders of Decapolis.

^{32 Ref} And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to lay his hand upon him.

^{33 Ref} And he took him aside from the multitude privately, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat, and touched his tongue;

^{34 Ref} and looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened.

^{35 Ref} And his ears were opened, and the bond of his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain.

^{36 Ref} And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it.

^{37 Ref} And they were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well; he maketh even the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.

^{4 Ref} and, `coming' from the market-place, if they do not baptize themselves, they do not eat; and many other things there are that they received to hold, baptisms of cups, and pots, and brazen vessels, and couches.

^{5 Ref} Then question him do the Pharisees and the scribes, `Wherefore do thy disciples not walk according to the tradition of the elders, but with unwashed hands do eat the bread?'

^{6 Ref} and he answering said to them -- `Well did Isaiah prophesy concerning you, hypocrites, as it hath been written, This people with the lips doth honor Me, and their heart is far from Me;

^{7 Ref} and in vain do they worship Me, teaching teachings, commands of men;

^{8 Ref} for, having put away the command of God, ye hold the tradition of men, baptisms of pots and cups; and many other such like things ye do.'

^{9 Ref} And he said to them, `Well do ye put away the command of God that your tradition ye may keep;

^{10 Ref} for Moses said, Honour thy father and thy mother; and, He who is speaking evil of father or mother -- let him die the death;

^{11 Ref} and ye say, If a man may say to father or to mother, Korban (that is, a gift), `is' whatever thou mayest be profited out of mine,

¹² and no more do ye suffer him to do anything for his father or for his mother,

^{13 Ref} setting aside the word of God for your tradition that ye delivered; and many such like things ye do.'

^{14 Ref} And having called near all the multitude, he said to them, `Hearken to me, ye all, and understand;

^{15 Ref} there is nothing from without the man entering into him that is able to defile him, but the things coming out from him, those are the things defiling the man.

¹⁶ If any hath ears to hear -- let him hear.'

^{17 Ref} And when he entered into a house from the multitude, his disciples were questioning him about the simile,

^{18 Ref} and he saith to them, `So also ye are without understanding! Do ye not perceive that nothing from without entering into the man is able to defile him?

^{19 Ref} because it doth not enter into his heart, but into the belly, and into the drain it doth go out, purifying all the meats.'

^{20 Ref} And he said -- `That which is coming out from the man, that doth defile the man;

^{21 Ref} for from within, out of the heart of men, the evil reasonings do come forth, adulteries, whoredoms, murders,

^{22 Ref} thefts, covetous desires, wickedness, deceit, arrogance, an evil eye, evil speaking, pride, foolishness;

^{23 Ref} all these evils do come forth from within, and they defile the man.'

^{24 Ref} And from thence having risen, he went away to the borders of Tyre and Sidon, and having entered into the house, he wished none to know, and he was not able to be hid,

^{25 Ref} for a woman having heard about him, whose little daughter had an unclean spirit, having come, fell at his feet, --

^{26 Ref} and the woman was a Greek, a Syro-Phenician by nation -- and was asking him, that the demon he may cast forth out of her daughter.

^{27 Ref} And Jesus said to her, `Suffer first the children to be filled, for it is not good to take the children's bread, and to cast `it' to the little dogs.'

^{28 Ref} And she answered and saith to him, `Yes, sir; for the little dogs also under the table do eat of the children's crumbs.'

^{29 Ref} And he said to her, `Because of this word go; the demon hath gone forth out of thy daughter;'

^{30 Ref} and having come away to her house, she found the demon gone forth, and the daughter laid upon the couch.

^{31 Ref} And again, having gone forth from the coasts of Tyre and Sidon, he came unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the coasts of Decapolis,

^{32 Ref} and they bring to him a deaf, stuttering man, and they call on him that he may put the hand on him.

^{33 Ref} And having taken him away from the multitude by himself, he put his fingers to his ears, and having spit, he touched his tongue,

^{34 Ref} and having looked to the heaven, he sighed, and saith to him, `Ephphatha,' that is, `Be thou opened;'

^{35 Ref} and immediately were his ears opened, and the string of his tongue was loosed, and he was speaking plain.

^{36 Ref} And he charged them that they may tell no one, but the more he was charging them, the more abundantly they were proclaiming `it',

^{37 Ref} and they were being beyond measure astonished, saying, `Well hath he done all things; both the deaf he doth make to hear, and the dumb to speak.'
