Luke 18
World English Bible (WEB)
1 Ref He also spoke a parable to them that they must always pray, and not give up,
2 Ref saying, "There was a judge in a certain city who didn't fear God, and didn't respect man.
3 Ref A widow was in that city, and she often came to him, saying, 'Defend me from my adversary!'
4 Ref He wouldn't for a while, but afterward he said to himself, 'Though I neither fear God, nor respect man,
5 Ref yet because this widow bothers me, I will defend her, or else she will wear me out by her continual coming.'"
6 Ref The Lord said, "Listen to what the unrighteous judge says.
7 Ref Won't God avenge his chosen ones, who are crying out to him day and night, and yet he exercises patience with them?
8 Ref I tell you that he will avenge them quickly. Nevertheless, when the Son of Man comes, will he find faith on the earth?"
9 Ref He spoke also this parable to certain people who were convinced of their own righteousness, and who despised all others.
10 Ref "Two men went up into the temple to pray; one was a Pharisee, and the other was a tax collector.
11 Ref The Pharisee stood and prayed to himself like this: 'God, I thank you, that I am not like the rest of men, extortioners, unrighteous, adulterers, or even like this tax collector.
12 Ref I fast twice a week. I give tithes of all that I get.'
13 Ref But the tax collector, standing far away, wouldn't even lift up his eyes to heaven, but beat his breast, saying, 'God, be merciful to me, a sinner!'
14 Ref I tell you, this man went down to his house justified rather than the other; for everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but he who humbles himself will be exalted."
15 Ref They were also bringing their babies to him, that he might touch them. But when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them.
16 Ref Jesus summoned them, saying, "Allow the little children to come to me, and don't hinder them, for the Kingdom of God belongs to such as these.
17 Ref Most assuredly, I tell you, whoever doesn't receive the Kingdom of God like a little child, he will in no way enter into it."
18 Ref A certain ruler asked him, saying, "Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?"
19 Ref Jesus asked him, "Why do you call me good? No one is good, except one--God.
20 Ref You know the commandments: 'Don't commit adultery,' 'Don't murder,' 'Don't steal,' 'Don't give false testimony,' 'Honor your father and your mother.'"
21 Ref He said, "I have observed all these things from my youth up."
22 Ref When Jesus heard these things, he said to him, "You still lack one thing. Sell all that you have, and distribute it to the poor. You will have treasure in heaven. Come, follow me."
23 Ref But when he heard these things, he became very sad, for he was very rich.
24 Ref Jesus, seeing that he became very sad, said, "How hard it is for those who have riches to enter into the Kingdom of God!
25 Ref For it is easier for a camel to enter in through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God."
26 Ref Those who heard it said, "Then who can be saved?"
27 Ref But he said, "The things which are impossible with men are possible with God."
28 Ref Peter said, "Look, we have left everything, and followed you."
29 Ref He said to them, "Most assuredly I tell you, there is no one who has left house, or wife, or brothers, or parents, or children, for the Kingdom of God's sake,
30 Ref who will not receive many times more in this time, and in the world to come, eternal life."
31 Ref He took the twelve aside, and said to them, "Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and all the things that are written through the prophets concerning the Son of Man will be completed.
32 Ref For he will be delivered up to the Gentiles, will be mocked, treated shamefully, and spit on.
33 Ref They will scourge and kill him. On the third day, he will rise again."
34 Ref They understood none of these things. This saying was hidden from them, and they didn't understand the things that were said.
35 Ref It happened, as he came near Jericho, a certain blind man sat by the road, begging.
36 Ref Hearing a multitude going by, he asked what this meant.
37 Ref They told him that Jesus of Nazareth was passing by.
38 Ref He cried out, "Jesus, you son of David, have mercy on me!"
39 Ref Those who led the way rebuked him, that he should be quiet; but he cried out all the more, "You son of David, have mercy on me!"
40 Ref Standing still, Jesus commanded him to be brought to him. When he had come near, he asked him,
41 Ref "What do you want me to do?" He said, "Lord, that I may see again."
42 Ref Jesus said to him, "Receive your sight. Your faith has healed you."
43 Ref Immediately he received his sight, and followed him, glorifying God. All the people, when they saw it, praised God.

1 Ref And he spake a parable unto them to the end that they ought always to pray, and not to faint;
2 Ref saying, There was in a city a judge, who feared not God, and regarded not man:
3 Ref and there was a widow in that city; and she came oft unto him, saying, Avenge me of mine adversary.
4 Ref And he would not for a while: but afterward he said within himself, Though I fear not God, nor regard man;
5 Ref yet because this widow troubleth me, I will avenge her, lest she wear me out by her continual coming.
6 Ref And the Lord said, Hear what the unrighteous judge saith.
7 Ref And shall not God avenge his elect, that cry to him day and night, and `yet' he is longsuffering over them?
8 Ref I say unto you, that he will avenge them speedily. Nevertheless, when the Son of man cometh, shall he find faith on the earth?
9 Ref And he spake also this parable unto certain who trusted in themselves that they were righteous, and set all others at nought:
10 Ref Two men went up into the temple to pray; the one a Pharisee, and the other a publican.
11 Ref The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God, I thank thee, that I am not as the rest of men, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as this publican.
12 Ref I fast twice in the week; I give tithes of all that I get.
13 Ref But the publican, standing afar off, would not lift up so much as his eyes unto heaven, but smote his breast, saying, God, be thou merciful to me a sinner.
14 Ref I say unto you, This man went down to his house justified rather than the other: for every one that exalteth himself shall be humbled; but he that humbleth himself shall be exalted.
15 Ref And they were bringing unto him also their babes, that he should touch them: but when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them.
16 Ref But Jesus called them unto him, saying, Suffer the little children to come unto me, and forbid them not: for to such belongeth the kingdom of God.
17 Ref Verily I say unto you, Whosoever shall not receive the kingdom of God as a little child, he shall in no wise enter therein.
18 Ref And a certain ruler asked him, saying, Good Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?
19 Ref And Jesus said unto him, Why callest thou me good? none is good, save one, `even' God.
20 Ref Thou knowest the commandments, Do not commit adultery, Do not kill, Do not steal, Do not bear false witness, Honor thy father and mother.
21 Ref And he said, All these things have I observed from my youth up.
22 Ref And when Jesus heard it, he said unto him, One thing thou lackest yet: sell all that thou hast, and distribute unto the poor, and thou shalt have treasure in heaven: and come, follow me.
23 Ref But when he heard these things, he became exceeding sorrowful; for he was very rich.
24 Ref And Jesus seeing him said, How hardly shall they that have riches enter into the kingdom of God!
25 Ref For it is easier for a camel to enter in through a needle's eye, than for a rich man to enter into the kingdom of God.
26 Ref And they that heard it said, Then who can be saved?
27 Ref But he said, The things which are impossible with men are possible with God.
28 Ref And Peter said, Lo, we have left our own, and followed thee.
29 Ref And he said unto them, Verily I say unto you, There is no man that hath left house, or wife, or brethren, or parents, or children, for the kingdom of God's sake,
30 Ref who shall not receive manifold more in this time, and in the world to come eternal life.
31 Ref And he took unto him the twelve, and said unto them, Behold, we go up to Jerusalem, and all the things that are written through the prophets shall be accomplished unto the Son of man.
32 Ref For he shall be delivered up unto the Gentiles, and shall be mocked, and shamefully treated, and spit upon:
33 Ref and they shall scourge and kill him: and the third day he shall rise again.
34 Ref And they understood none of these things; and this saying was hid from them, and they perceived not the things that were said.
35 Ref And it came to pass, as he drew nigh unto Jericho, a certain blind man sat by the way side begging:
36 Ref and hearing a multitude going by, he inquired what this meant.
37 Ref And they told him that Jesus of Nazareth passeth by.
38 Ref And he cried, saying, Jesus, thou son of David, have mercy on me.
39 Ref And they that went before rebuked him, that he should hold his peace: but he cried out the more a great deal, Thou son of David, have mercy on me.
40 Ref And Jesus stood, and commanded him to be brought unto him: and when he was come near, he asked him,
41 Ref What wilt thou that I should do unto thee? And he said, Lord, that I may receive my sight.
42 Ref And Jesus said unto him, Receive thy sight; thy faith hath made thee whole.
43 Ref And immediately he received his sight, and followed him, glorifying God: and all the people, when they saw it, gave praise unto God.
Bible in Basic English (BBE)
1 Ref And he made a story for them, the point of which was that men were to go on making prayer and not get tired;
2 Ref Saying, There was a judge in a certain town, who had no fear of God or respect for man:
3 Ref And there was a widow in that town, and she kept on coming to him and saying, Give me my right against the man who has done me wrong.
4 Ref And for a time he would not: but later, he said to himself, Though I have no fear of God or respect for man,
5 Ref Because this widow is a trouble to me, I will give her her right; for if not, I will be completely tired out by her frequent coming.
6 Ref And the Lord said, Give ear to the words of the evil judge.
7 Ref And will not God do right in the cause of his saints, whose cries come day and night to his ears, though he is long in doing it?
8 Ref I say to you that he will quickly do right in their cause. But when the Son of man comes, will there be any faith on earth?
9 Ref And he made this story for some people who were certain that they were good, and had a low opinion of others:
10 Ref Two men went up to the Temple for prayer; one a Pharisee, and the other a tax-farmer.
11 Ref The Pharisee, taking up his position, said to himself these words: God, I give you praise because I am not like other men, who take more than their right, who are evil-doers, who are untrue to their wives, or even like this tax-farmer.
12 Ref Twice in the week I go without food; I give a tenth of all I have.
13 Ref The tax-farmer, on the other hand, keeping far away, and not lifting up even his eyes to heaven, made signs of grief and said, God, have mercy on me, a sinner.
14 Ref I say to you, This man went back to his house with God's approval, and not the other: for everyone who makes himself high will be made low and whoever makes himself low will be made high.
15 Ref And they took their children to him, so that he might put his hands on them: but when the disciples saw it, they said sharp words to them
16 Ref But Jesus sent for them, saying, Let the children come to me, and do not keep them away, for of such is the kingdom of heaven.
17 Ref Truly I say to you, Whoever does not put himself under the kingdom of God like a little child, will not come into it at all.
18 Ref And a certain ruler put a question to him, saying, Good Master, what have I to do so that I may have eternal life?
19 Ref And Jesus said to him, Why do you say that I am good? No one is good, but only God.
20 Ref You have knowledge of what the law says: Do not be untrue to your wife, Do not put anyone to death, Do not take what is not yours, Do not give false witness, Give honour to your father and mother.
21 Ref And he said, All these things I have done from the time when I was a boy.
22 Ref And Jesus, hearing it, said to him, One thing you still have need of; get money for your goods, and give it away to the poor, and you will have wealth in heaven; and come after me.
23 Ref But at these words he became very sad, for he had great wealth.
24 Ref And Jesus, looking at him, said, How hard it is for those who have wealth to get into the kingdom of God!
25 Ref It is simpler for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a man who has much money to come into the kingdom of God.
26 Ref And those who were present said, Then who may have salvation?
27 Ref But he said, Things which are not possible with man are possible with God.
28 Ref And Peter said, See, we have given up what is ours to come after you.
29 Ref And he said to them, Truly I say to you, There is no man who has given up house or wife or brothers or father or mother or children, because of the kingdom of God,
30 Ref Who will not get much more in this time, and in the world to come, eternal life.
31 Ref And he took with him the twelve and said to them, Now we are going up to Jerusalem, and all the things which were said by the prophets will be done to the Son of man.
32 Ref For he will be given up to the Gentiles, and will be made sport of and put to shame:
33 Ref And he will be given cruel blows and put to death, and on the third day he will come back to life.
34 Ref But they did not take in the sense of any of these words, and what he said was not clear to them, and their minds were not able to see it.
35 Ref And it came about that when he got near Jericho, a certain blind man was seated by the side of the road, making requests for money from those who went by.
36 Ref And hearing the sound of a great number of people going by, he said, What is this?
37 Ref And they said to him, Jesus of Nazareth is going by.
38 Ref And he said in a loud voice, Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me.
39 Ref And those who were in front made protests and said to him, Be quiet: but he said all the more, O Son of David, have mercy on me.
40 Ref And Jesus, stopping, gave orders that he was to come to him, and when he came near, he said to him,
41 Ref What would you have me do for you? And he said, Lord, that I may be able to see again.
42 Ref And Jesus said, See again: your faith has made you well.
43 Ref And straight away he was able to see, and he went after him, giving glory to God; and all the people when they saw it gave praise to God.
