1 Peter 4

World English Bible (WEB)

1 Ref Forasmuch then as Christ suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves also with the same mind; for he who has suffered in the flesh has ceased from sin;

2 Ref that you no longer should live the rest of your time in the flesh for the lusts of men, but for the will of God.

3 Ref For we have spent enough of our past time doing the desire of the Gentiles, and having walked in lewdness, lusts, drunken binges, orgies, carousings, and abominable idolatries.

4 Ref They think it is strange that you don't run with them into the same excess of riot, blaspheming:

5 Ref who will give account to him who is ready to judge the living and the dead.

6 Ref For to this end was the Gospel preached even to the dead, that they might be judged indeed as men in the flesh, but live as to God in the spirit.

7 Ref But the end of all things is near. Therefore be of sound mind, self-controlled, and sober in prayer.

8 Ref And above all things be earnest in your love among yourselves, for love covers a multitude of sins.

9 Ref Be hospitable one to another without grumbling.

10 Ref According as each has received a gift, be ministering it among yourselves, as good stewards of the grace of God in its various forms.

11 Ref If any man speaks, let it be as it were oracles of God. If any man serves, let it be as of the strength which God supplies, that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom belong the glory and the dominion forever and ever. Amen.

12 Ref Beloved, don't be astonished at the fiery trial which has come upon you, to test you, as though a strange thing happened to you.

13 Ref But because you are partakers of Christ's sufferings, rejoice; that at the revelation of his glory also you may rejoice with exceeding joy.

14 Ref If you are insulted for the name of Christ, blessed are you; because the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. On their part he is blasphemed, but on your part he is glorified.

15 Ref For let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or an evil doer, or as a meddler in other men's matters.

16 Ref But if one of you suffers for being a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God in this matter.

17 Ref For the time has come for judgment to begin at the house of God. If it begins first with us, what will happen to those who don't obey the Gospel of God?

18 Ref "If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will happen to the ungodly and the sinner?"

19 Ref Therefore let them also who suffer according to the will of God in doing good entrust their souls to him, as to a faithful Creator.

King James Version (KJV)

1 Ref Forasmuch then as Christ hath suffered for us in the flesh, arm yourselves likewise with the same mind: for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;

2 Ref That he no longer should live the rest of his time in the flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

3 Ref For the time past of our life may suffice us to have wrought the will of the Gentiles, when we walked in lasciviousness, lusts, excess of wine, revellings, banquetings, and abominable idolatries:

4 Ref Wherein they think it strange that ye run not with them to the same excess of riot, speaking evil of you:

5 Ref Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.

6 Ref For for this cause was the gospel preached also to them that are dead, that they might be judged according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

7 Ref But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore sober, and watch unto prayer.

8 Ref And above all things have fervent charity among yourselves: for charity shall cover the multitude of sins.

9 Ref Use hospitality one to another without grudging.

10 Ref As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

11 Ref If any man speak, let him speak as the oracles of God; if any man minister, let him do it as of the ability which God giveth: that God in all things may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom be praise and dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

12 Ref Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial which is to try you, as though some strange thing happened unto you:

13 Ref But rejoice, inasmuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings; that, when his glory shall be revealed, ye may be glad also with exceeding joy.

14 Ref If ye be reproached for the name of Christ, happy are ye; for the spirit of glory and of God resteth upon you: on their part he is evil spoken of, but on your part he is glorified.

15 Ref But let none of you suffer as a murderer, or as a thief, or as an evildoer, or as a busybody in other men's matters.

16 Ref Yet if any man suffer as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God on this behalf.

17 Ref For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God?

18 Ref And if the righteous scarcely be saved, where shall the ungodly and the sinner appear?

19 Ref Wherefore let them that suffer according to the will of God commit the keeping of their souls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator.

Bible in Basic English (BBE)

1 Ref So that as Jesus was put to death in the flesh, do you yourselves be of the same mind; for the death of the flesh puts an end to sin;

2 Ref So that you may give the rest of your lives in the flesh, not to the desires of men, but to the purpose of God.

3 Ref Because for long enough, in times past, we have been living after the way of the Gentiles, given up to the desires of the flesh, to drinking and feasting and loose behaviour and unclean worship of images;

4 Ref And they are wondering that you no longer go with them in this violent wasting of life, and are saying evil things of you:

5 Ref But they will have to give an account of themselves to him who is ready to be the judge of the living and the dead.

6 Ref For this was the reason why the good news of Jesus was given even to the dead, so that they might be judged as men in the flesh, but might be living before God in the spirit.

7 Ref But the end of all things is near: so be serious in your behaviour and keep on the watch with prayer;

8 Ref And most of all be warm in your love for one another; because in love there is forgiveness for sins without number:

9 Ref Keep open house for all with a glad heart;

10 Ref Making distribution among one another of whatever has been given to you, like true servants of the unmeasured grace of God;

11 Ref If anyone has anything to say, let it be as the words of God; if anyone has the desire to be the servant of others, let him do it in the strength which is given by God; so that in all things God may have the glory through Jesus Christ, whose are the glory and the power for ever.

12 Ref Dear brothers, do not be surprised, as if it was something strange, if your faith is tested as by fire:

13 Ref But be glad that you are given a part in the pains of Christ; so that at the revelation of his glory you may have great joy.

14 Ref If men say evil things of you because of the name of Christ, happy are you; for the Spirit of glory and of God is resting on you.

15 Ref Let no one among you undergo punishment as a taker of life, or as a thief, or as an evil-doer, or as one who is over-interested in other men's business;

16 Ref But if he undergoes punishment as a Christian, that is no shame to him; let him give glory to God in this name.

17 Ref For the time has come for the judging, starting with the church of God; but if it makes a start with us, what will be the end of those who are not under the rule of God?

18 Ref And if it is hard for even the good man to get salvation, what chance has the man without religion or the sinner?

19 Ref For this reason let those who by the purpose of God undergo punishment, keep on in well-doing and put their souls into the safe hands of their Maker.
