Matthew 22

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Ref And Jesus answering, again spake to them in similes, saying,

2 Ref `The reign of the heavens was likened to a man, a king, who made marriage-feasts for his son,

3 Ref and he sent forth his servants to call those having been called to the marriage-feasts, and they were not willing to come.

4 Ref `Again he sent forth other servants, saying, Say to those who have been called: Lo, my dinner I prepared, my oxen and the fatlings have been killed, and all things `are' ready, come ye to the marriage-feasts;

5 Ref and they, having disregarded `it', went away, the one to his own field, and the other to his merchandise;

6 Ref and the rest, having laid hold on his servants, did insult and slay `them'.

7 Ref `And the king having heard, was wroth, and having sent forth his soldiers, he destroyed those murderers, and their city he set on fire;

8 Ref then saith he to his servants, The marriage-feast indeed is ready, and those called were not worthy,

9 Ref be going, then, on to the cross-ways, and as many as ye may find, call ye to the marriage-feasts.

10 Ref `And those servants, having gone forth to the ways, did gather all, as many as they found, both bad and good, and the marriage-feast apartment was filled with those reclining.

11 Ref `And the king having come in to view those reclining, saw there a man not clothed with clothing of the marriage-feast,

12 Ref and he saith to him, Comrade, how didst thou come in hither, not having clothing of the marriage-feast? and he was speechless.

13 Ref `Then said the king to the ministrants, Having bound his feet and hands, take him up and cast forth to the outer darkness, there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of the teeth;

14 Ref for many are called, and few chosen.'

15 Ref Then the Pharisees having gone, took counsel how they might ensnare him in words,

16 Ref and they send to him their disciples with the Herodians, saying, `Teacher, we have known that thou art true, and the way of God in truth thou dost teach, and thou art not caring for any one, for thou dost not look to the face of men;

17 Ref tell us, therefore, what dost thou think? is it lawful to give tribute to Caesar or not?'

18 Ref And Jesus having known their wickedness, said, `Why me do ye tempt, hypocrites?

19 Ref show me the tribute-coin?' and they brought to him a denary;

20 Ref and he saith to them, `Whose `is' this image and the inscription?'

21 Ref they say to him, `Caesar's;' then saith he to them, `Render therefore the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God;'

22 Ref and having heard they wondered, and having left him they went away.

23 Ref In that day there came near to him Sadducees, who are saying there is not a rising again, and they questioned him, saying,

24 Ref `Teacher, Moses said, If any one may die not having children, his brother shall marry his wife, and shall raise up seed to his brother.

25 Ref `And there were with us seven brothers, and the first having married did die, and not having seed, he left his wife to his brother;

26 in like manner also the second, and the third, unto the seventh,

27 and last of all died also the woman;

28 therefore in the rising again, of which of the seven shall she be wife -- for all had her?'

29 Ref And Jesus answering said to them, `Ye go astray, not knowing the Writings, nor the power of God;

30 Ref for in the rising again they do not marry, nor are they given in marriage, but are as messengers of God in heaven.

31 Ref `And concerning the rising again of the dead, did ye not read that which was spoken to you by God, saying,

32 Ref I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not a God of dead men, but of living.'

33 Ref And having heard, the multitudes were astonished at his teaching;

34 Ref and the Pharisees, having heard that he did silence the Sadducees, were gathered together unto him;

35 Ref and one of them, a lawyer, did question, tempting him, and saying,

36 Ref `Teacher, which `is' the great command in the Law?'

37 Ref And Jesus said to him, `Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thine understanding --

38 this is a first and great command;

39 Ref and the second `is' like to it, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself;

40 Ref on these -- the two commands -- all the law and the prophets do hang.'

41 Ref And the Pharisees having been gathered together, Jesus did question them,

42 Ref saying, `What do ye think concerning the Christ? of whom is he son?' They say to him, `Of David.'

43 Ref He saith to them, `How then doth David in the Spirit call him lord, saying,

44 Ref The Lord said to my lord, Sit at my right hand, till I may make thine enemies thy footstool?

45 Ref If then David doth call him lord, how is he his son?'

46 Ref And no one was able to answer him a word, nor durst any from that day question him any more.

1 Ref And Jesus answered and spake again in parables unto them, saying,

2 Ref The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a certain king, who made a marriage feast for his son,

3 Ref and sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the marriage feast: and they would not come.

4 Ref Again he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them that are bidden, Behold, I have made ready my dinner; my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come to the marriage feast.

5 Ref But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his own farm, another to his merchandise;

6 Ref and the rest laid hold on his servants, and treated them shamefully, and killed them.

7 Ref But the king was wroth; and he sent his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned their city.

8 Ref Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they that were bidden were not worthy.

9 Ref Go ye therefore unto the partings of the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage feast.

10 Ref And those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was filled with guests.

11 Ref But when the king came in to behold the guests, he saw there a man who had not on a wedding-garment:

12 Ref and he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding-garment? And he was speechless.

13 Ref Then the king said to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and cast him out into the outer darkness; there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.

14 Ref For many are called, but few chosen.

15 Ref Then went the Pharisees, and took counsel how they might ensnare him in `his' talk.

16 Ref And they send to him their disciples, with the Herodians, saying, Teacher, we know that thou art true, and teachest the way of God in truth, and carest not for any one: for thou regardest not the person of men.

17 Ref Tell us therefore, What thinkest thou? Is it lawful to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?

18 Ref But Jesus perceived their wickedness, and said, Why make ye trial of me, ye hypocrites?

19 Ref Show me the tribute money. And they brought unto him a denarius.

20 Ref And he saith unto them, Whose is this image and superscription?

21 Ref They say unto him, Caesar's. Then saith he unto them, Render therefore unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.

22 Ref And when they heard it, they marvelled, and left him, and went away.

23 Ref On that day there came to him Sadducees, they that say that there is no resurrection: and they asked him,

24 Ref saying, Teacher, Moses said, If a man die, having no children, his brother shall marry his wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

25 Ref Now there were with us seven brethren: and the first married and deceased, and having no seed left his wife unto his brother;

26 in like manner the second also, and the third, unto the seventh.

27 And after them all, the woman died.

28 In the resurrection therefore whose wife shall she be of the seven? for they all had her.

29 Ref But Jesus answered and said unto them, Ye do err, not knowing the scriptures, nor the power of God.

30 Ref For in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are as angels in heaven.

31 Ref But as touching the resurrection of the dead, have ye not read that which was spoken unto you by God, saying,

32 Ref I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not `the God' of the dead, but of the living.

33 Ref And when the multitudes heard it, they were astonished at his teaching.

34 Ref But the Pharisees, when they heard that he had put the Sadducees to silence, gathered themselves together.

35 Ref And one of them, a lawyer, asked him a question, trying him:

36 Ref Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?

37 Ref And he said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.

38 This is the great and first commandment.

39 Ref And a second like `unto it' is this, Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.

40 Ref On these two commandments the whole law hangeth, and the prophets.

41 Ref Now while the Pharisees were gathered together, Jesus asked them a question,

42 Ref saying, What think ye of the Christ? whose son is he? They say unto him, `The son' of David.

43 Ref He saith unto them, How then doth David in the Spirit call him Lord, saying,

44 Ref The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand, Till I put thine enemies underneath thy feet?

45 Ref If David then calleth him Lord, how is he his son?

46 Ref And no one was able to answer him a word, neither durst any man from that day forth ask him any more questions.

Bible in Basic English (BBE)

1 Ref And Jesus, talking to them again in stories, said:

2 Ref The kingdom of heaven is like a certain king, who made a feast when his son was married,

3 Ref And sent out his servants to get in the guests to the feast: and they would not come.

4 Ref Again he sent out other servants, with orders to say to the guests, See, I have made ready my feast: my oxen and my fat beasts have been put to death, and all things are ready: come to the feast.

5 Ref But they gave no attention, and went about their business, one to his farm, another to his trade:

6 Ref And the rest put violent hands on his servants, and did evil to them, and put them to death.

7 Ref But the king was angry; and he sent his armies, and those who had put his servants to death he gave to destruction, burning down their town with fire.

8 Ref Then he said to his servants, The feast is ready but the guests were not good enough.

9 Ref Go then to the cross-roads, and get all those whom you see to come to the bride-feast.

10 Ref And those servants went out into the streets, and got together all those whom they came across, bad and good: and the feast was full of guests.

11 Ref But when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man who had not on a guest's robe;

12 Ref And he says to him, Friend, how came you in here not having a guest's robe? And he had nothing to say.

13 Ref Then the king said to the servants, Put cords round his hands and feet and put him out into the dark; there will be weeping and cries of sorrow.

14 Ref For out of all to whom the good news has come, only a small number will get salvation.

15 Ref Then the Pharisees went and had a meeting to see how they might make use of his words to take him.

16 Ref And they sent to him their disciples, with the Herodians, saying, Master, we see that you are true, and that you are teaching the true way of God, and have no fear of anyone, because you have no respect for a man's position.

17 Ref Give us, then, your opinion of this: Is it right to give tax to Caesar, or not?

18 Ref But Jesus saw their trick and said, Oh false ones, why are you attempting to put me in the wrong?

19 Ref Let me see the tax money. And they gave him a penny.

20 Ref And he said to them, Whose is this image and name on it?

21 Ref They say to him, Caesar's. Then he said to them, Give to Caesar the things which are Caesar's, and to God the things which are God's.

22 Ref And hearing it, they were full of wonder, and went away from him.

23 Ref On the same day there came to him the Sadducees, who say that there is no coming back from the dead: and they put a question to him, saying,

24 Ref Master, Moses said, If a man, at the time of his death, has no children, let his brother take his wife, and get a family for his brother;

25 Ref Now there were among us seven brothers; and the first was married and at his death, having no seed, gave his wife to his brother;

26 In the same way the second and the third, up to the seventh.

27 And last of all the woman came to her end.

28 When they come back from the dead, then, whose wife will she be of the seven? because they all had her.

29 Ref But Jesus said to them in answer, You are in error, not having knowledge of the Writings, or of the power of God.

30 Ref For when they come back from the dead there are no husbands and wives, but they are as the angels in heaven.

31 Ref But about the dead coming back to life, have you no knowledge of what was said to you by God in the Writings:

32 Ref I am the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob? God is not the God of the dead but of the living.

33 Ref And the people hearing it were surprised at his teaching.

34 Ref But the Pharisees, hearing how the mouths of the Sadducees had been stopped, came together;

35 Ref And one of them, a teacher of the law, put a question to him, testing him, and saying,

36 Ref Master, which is the chief rule in the law?

37 Ref And he said to him, Have love for the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind.

38 This is the first and greatest rule.

39 Ref And a second like it is this, Have love for your neighbour as for yourself.

40 Ref On these two rules all the law and the prophets are based.

41 Ref Now while the Pharisees were together, Jesus put a question to them, saying,

42 Ref What is your opinion of the Christ? whose son is he? They say to him, The Son of David.

43 Ref He says to them, How then does David in the Spirit give him the name of Lord, saying,

44 Ref The Lord said to my Lord, Be seated at my right hand, till I put under your feet all those who are against you?

45 Ref If David then gives him the name of Lord, how is he his son?

46 Ref And no one was able to give him an answer, and so great was their fear of him, that from that day no one put any more questions to him.
