Luke 20

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Ref And it came to pass, on one of those days, as he is teaching the people in the temple, and proclaiming good news, the chief priests and the scribes, with the elders, came upon `him',

2 Ref and spake unto him, saying, `Tell us by what authority thou dost these things? or who is he that gave to thee this authority?'

3 Ref And he answering said unto them, `I will question you -- I also -- one thing, and tell me:

4 Ref the baptism of John, from heaven was it, or from men?'

5 Ref And they reasoned with themselves, saying -- `If we may say, From heaven, he will say, Wherefore, then, did ye not believe him?

6 Ref and if we may say, From men, all the people will stone us, for they are having been persuaded John to be a prophet.'

7 Ref And they answered, that they knew not whence `it was',

8 Ref and Jesus said to them, `Neither do I say to you by what authority I do these things.'

9 Ref And he began to speak unto the people this simile: `A certain man planted a vineyard, and gave it out to husbandmen, and went abroad for a long time,

10 Ref and at the season he sent unto the husbandmen a servant, that from the fruit of the vineyard they may give to him, but the husbandmen having beat him, did send `him' away empty.

11 Ref `And he added to send another servant, and they that one also having beaten and dishonoured, did send away empty;

12 and he added to send a third, and this one also, having wounded, they did cast out.

13 Ref `And the owner of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my son -- the beloved, perhaps having seen this one, they will do reverence;

14 Ref and having seen him, the husbandmen reasoned among themselves, saying, This is the heir; come, we may kill him, that the inheritance may become ours;

15 Ref and having cast him outside of the vineyard, they killed `him'; what, then, shall the owner of the vineyard do to them?

16 Ref He will come, and destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard to others.' And having heard, they said, `Let it not be!'

17 Ref and he, having looked upon them, said, `What, then, is this that hath been written: A stone that the builders rejected -- this became head of a corner?

18 Ref every one who hath fallen on that stone shall be broken, and on whom it may fall, it will crush him to pieces.'

19 Ref And the chief priests and the scribes sought to lay hands on him in that hour, and they feared the people, for they knew that against them he spake this simile.

20 Ref And, having watched `him', they sent forth liers in wait, feigning themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his word, to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor,

21 Ref and they questioned him, saying, `Teacher, we have known that thou dost say and teach rightly, and dost not accept a person, but in truth the way of God dost teach;

22 Ref Is it lawful to us to give tribute to Caesar or not?'

23 Ref And he, having perceived their craftiness, said unto them, `Why me do ye tempt?

24 Ref shew me a denary; of whom hath it an image and superscription?' and they answering said, `Of Caesar:'

25 Ref and he said to them, `Give back, therefore, the things of Caesar to Caesar, and the things of God to God;'

26 Ref and they were not able to take hold on his saying before the people, and having wondered at his answer, they were silent.

27 Ref And certain of the Sadducees, who are denying that there is a rising again, having come near, questioned him,

28 Ref saying, `Teacher, Moses wrote to us, If any one's brother may die, having a wife, and he may die childless -- that his brother may take the wife, and may raise up seed to his brother.

29 Ref `There were, then, seven brothers, and the first having taken a wife, died childless,

30 and the second took the wife, and he died childless,

31 and the third took her, and in like manner also the seven -- they left not children, and they died;

32 Ref and last of all died also the woman:

33 Ref in the rising again, then, of which of them doth she become wife? -- for the seven had her as wife.'

34 Ref And Jesus answering said to them, `The sons of this age do marry and are given in marriage,

35 Ref but those accounted worthy to obtain that age, and the rising again that is out of the dead, neither marry, nor are they given in marriage;

36 Ref for neither are they able to die any more -- for they are like messengers -- and they are sons of God, being sons of the rising again.

37 Ref `And that the dead are raised, even Moses shewed at the Bush, since he doth call the Lord, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob;

38 Ref and He is not a God of dead men, but of living, for all live to Him.'

39 Ref And certain of the scribes answering said, `Teacher, thou didst say well;'

40 Ref and no more durst they question him anything.

41 Ref And he said unto them, `How do they say the Christ to be son of David,

42 Ref and David himself saith in the Book of Psalms, The Lord said to my lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

43 Ref till I shall make thine enemies thy footstool;

44 Ref David, then, doth call him lord, and how is he his son?'

45 Ref And, all the people hearing, he said to his disciples,

46 Ref `Take heed of the scribes, who are wishing to walk in long robes, and are loving salutations in the markets, and first seats in the synagogues, and first couches in the suppers,

47 Ref who devour the houses of the widows, and for a pretence make long prayers, these shall receive more abundant judgment.'

American Standard-ASV1901 (ASV)

1 Ref And it came to pass, on one of the days, as he was teaching the people in the temple, and preaching the gospel, there came upon him the chief priests and the scribes with the elders;

2 Ref and they spake, saying unto him, Tell us: By what authority doest thou these things? or who is he that gave thee this authority?

3 Ref And he answered and said unto them, I also will ask you a question; and tell me:

4 Ref The baptism of John, was it from heaven, or from men?

5 Ref And they reasoned with themselves, saying, If we shall say, From heaven; he will say, Why did ye not believe him?

6 Ref But if we shall say, From men; all the people will stone us: for they are persuaded that John was a prophet.

7 Ref And they answered, that they knew not whence `it was'.

8 Ref And Jesus said unto them, Neither tell I you by what authority I do these things.

9 Ref And he began to speak unto the people this parable: A man planted a vineyard, and let it out to husbandmen, and went into another country for a long time.

10 Ref And at the season he sent unto the husbandmen a servant, that they should give him of the fruit of the vineyard: but the husbandmen beat him, and sent him away empty.

11 Ref And he sent yet another servant: and him also they beat, and handled him shamefully, and sent him away empty.

12 And he sent yet a third: and him also they wounded, and cast him forth.

13 Ref And the lord of the vineyard said, What shall I do? I will send my beloved son; it may be they will reverence him.

14 Ref But when the husbandmen saw him, they reasoned one with another, saying, This is the heir; let us kill him, that the inheritance may be ours.

15 Ref And they cast him forth out of the vineyard, and killed him. What therefore will the lord of the vineyard do unto them?

16 Ref He will come and destroy these husbandmen, and will give the vineyard unto others. And when they heard it, they said, God forbid.

17 Ref But he looked upon them, and said, What then is this that is written, The stone which the builders rejected, The same was made the head of the corner?

18 Ref Every one that falleth on that stone shall be broken to pieces; but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will scatter him as dust.

19 Ref And the scribes and the chief priests sought to lay hands on him in that very hour; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he spake this parable against them.

20 Ref And they watched him, and sent forth spies, who feigned themselves to be righteous, that they might take hold of his speech, so as to deliver him up to the rule and to the authority of the governor.

21 Ref And they asked him, saying, Teacher, we know that thou sayest and teachest rightly, and acceptest not the person `of any', but of a truth teachest the way of God:

22 Ref Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Caesar, or not?

23 Ref But he perceived their craftiness, and said unto them,

24 Ref Show me a denarius. Whose image and superscription hath it? And they said, Caesar's.

25 Ref And he said unto them, Then render unto Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's.

26 Ref And they were not able to take hold of the saying before the people: and they marvelled at his answer, and held their peace.

27 Ref And there came to him certain of the Sadducees, they that say that there is no resurrection;

28 Ref and they asked him, saying, Teacher, Moses wrote unto us, that if a man's brother die, having a wife, and he be childless, his brother should take the wife, and raise up seed unto his brother.

29 Ref There were therefore seven brethren: and the first took a wife, and died childless;

30 and the second:

31 and the third took her; and likewise the seven also left no children, and died.

32 Ref Afterward the woman also died.

33 Ref In the resurrection therefore whose wife of them shall she be? for the seven had her to wife.

34 Ref And Jesus said unto them, The sons of this world marry, and are given in marriage:

35 Ref but they that are accounted worthy to attain to that world, and the resurrection from the dead, neither marry, nor are given in marriage:

36 Ref for neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are sons of God, being sons of the resurrection.

37 Ref But that the dead are raised, even Moses showed, in `the place concerning' the Bush, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.

38 Ref Now he is not the God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.

39 Ref And certain of the scribes answering said, Teacher, thou hast well said.

40 Ref For they durst not any more ask him any question.

41 Ref And he said unto them, How say they that the Christ is David's son?

42 Ref For David himself saith in the book of Psalms, The Lord said unto my Lord, Sit thou on my right hand,

43 Ref Till I make thine enemies the footstool of thy feet.

44 Ref David therefore calleth him Lord, and how is he his son?

45 Ref And in the hearing of all the people he said unto his disciples,

46 Ref Beware of the scribes, who desire to walk in long robes, and love salutations in the marketplaces, and chief seats in the synagogues, and chief places at feasts;

47 Ref who devour widows' houses, and for a pretence make long prayers: these shall receive greater condemnation.
