John 9

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 And passing by, he saw a man blind from birth,

2 Ref and his disciples asked him, saying, `Rabbi, who did sin, this one or his parents, that he should be born blind?'

3 Ref Jesus answered, `Neither did this one sin nor his parents, but that the works of God may be manifested in him;

4 Ref it behoveth me to be working the works of Him who sent me while it is day; night doth come, when no one is able to work: --

5 Ref when I am in the world, I am a light of the world.'

6 Ref These things saying, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and rubbed the clay on the eyes of the blind man, and said to him,

7 Ref `Go away, wash at the pool of Siloam,' which is, interpreted, Sent. He went away, therefore, and did wash, and came seeing;

8 Ref the neighbours, therefore, and those seeing him before, that he was blind, said, `Is not this he who is sitting and begging?'

9 others said -- `This is he;' and others -- `He is like to him;' he himself said, -- `I am `he'.'

10 Ref They said, therefore, to him, `How were thine eyes opened?'

11 Ref he answered and said, `A man called Jesus made clay, and rubbed my eyes, and said to me, Go away to the pool of Siloam, and wash; and having gone away and having washed, I received sight;'

12 Ref they said, therefore, to him, `Where is that one?' he saith, `I have not known.'

13 Ref They bring him to the Pharisees who once `was' blind,

14 Ref and it was a sabbath when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.

15 Ref Again, therefore, the Pharisees also were asking him how he received sight, and he said to them, `Clay he did put upon my eyes, and I did wash -- and I see.'

16 Ref Of the Pharisees, therefore, certain said, `This man is not from God, because the sabbath he doth not keep;' others said, `How is a man -- a sinful one -- able to do such signs?' and there was a division among them.

17 Ref They said to the blind man again, `Thou -- what dost thou say of him -- that he opened thine eyes?'

18 Ref and he said -- `He is a prophet.' The Jews, therefore, did not believe concerning him that he was blind and did receive sight, till that they called the parents of him who received sight,

19 Ref and they asked them, saying, `Is your son, of whom ye say that he was born blind? how then now doth he see?'

20 His parents answered them and said, `We have known that this is our son, and that he was born blind;

21 and how he now seeth, we have not known; or who opened his eyes, we have not known; himself is of age, ask him; he himself shall speak concerning himself.'

22 Ref These things said his parents, because they were afraid of the Jews, for already had the Jews agreed together, that if any one may confess him -- Christ, he may be put out of the synagogue;

23 Ref because of this his parents said -- `He is of age, ask him.'

24 Ref They called, therefore, a second time the man who was blind, and they said to him, `Give glory to God, we have known that this man is a sinner;'

25 Ref he answered, therefore, and said, `If he be a sinner -- I have not known, one thing I have known, that, being blind, now I see.'

26 And they said to him again, `What did he to thee? how did he open thine eyes?'

27 Ref He answered them, `I told you already, and ye did not hear; why again do ye wish to hear? do ye also wish to become his disciples?'

28 Ref They reviled him, therefore, and said, `Thou art his disciple, and we are Moses' disciples;

29 Ref we have known that God hath spoken to Moses, but this one -- we have not known whence he is.'

30 Ref The man answered and said to them, `Why, in this is a wonderful thing, that ye have not known whence he is, and he opened my eyes!

31 Ref and we have known that God doth not hear sinners, but, if any one may be a worshipper of God, and may do His will, him He doth hear;

32 Ref from the age it was not heard, that any one did open eyes of one who hath been born blind;

33 Ref if this one were not from God, he were not able to do anything.'

34 Ref They answered and said to him, `In sins thou wast born altogether, and thou dost teach us!' and they cast him forth without.

35 Ref Jesus heard that they cast him forth without, and having found him, he said to him, `Dost thou believe in the Son of God?'

36 Ref he answered and said, `Who is he, sir, that I may believe in him?'

37 Ref And Jesus said to him, `Thou hast both seen him, and he who is speaking with thee is he;'

38 Ref and he said, `I believe, sir,' and bowed before him.

39 Ref And Jesus said, `For judgment I to this world did come, that those not seeing may see, and those seeing may become blind.'

40 Ref And those of the Pharisees who were with him heard these things, and they said to him, `Are we also blind?'

41 Ref Jesus said to them, `If ye were blind, ye were not having had sin, but now ye say -- We see, therefore doth your sin remain.

Bible in Basic English (BBE)

1 And when he went on his way, he saw a man blind from birth.

2 Ref And his disciples put a question to him, saying, Master, was it because of this man's sin, or the sin of his father and mother, that he has been blind from birth?

3 Ref Jesus said in answer, It was not because of his sin, or because of his father's or mother's; it was so that the works of God might be seen openly in him.

4 Ref While it is day we have to do the works of him who sent me: the night comes when no work may be done.

5 Ref As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

6 Ref Having said these words, he put earth, mixed with water from his mouth, on the man's eyes,

7 Ref And said to him, Go and make yourself clean in the bath of Siloam (the sense of the name is, Sent). So he went away and, after washing, came back able to see.

8 Ref Then the neighbours and others who had seen him before in the street, with his hand out for money, said, Is not this the man who got money from people?

9 Some said, It is he: others said, No, but he is like him. He said, I am he.

10 Ref So they said to him, How then were your eyes made open?

11 Ref His answer was: The man who is named Jesus put earth mixed with water on my eyes, and said to me, Go and make yourself clean in Siloam: so I went away and, after washing, am now able to see.

12 Ref And they said to him, Where is he? His answer was: I have no knowledge.

13 Ref They took him before the Pharisees--this man who had been blind.

14 Ref Now the day on which the earth was mixed by Jesus and the man's eyes were made open was the Sabbath.

15 Ref So the Pharisees put more questions to him about how his eyes had been made open. And he said to them, He put earth on my eyes, and I had a wash and am able to see.

16 Ref Then some of the Pharisees said, That man has not come from God, for he does not keep the Sabbath. Others said, How is it possible for a sinner to do such signs? So there was a division among them.

17 Ref Again they said to the blind man, What have you to say about him for opening your eyes? And he said, He is a prophet.

18 Ref Now the Jews had no belief in the statement that he had been blind and was now able to see, till they sent for the father and mother of the man whose eyes had been made open,

19 Ref And put the question to them, saying, Is this your son, of whom you say that he was blind at birth? how is it then that he is now able to see?

20 In answer his father and mother said, We are certain that this is our son and that he was blind at birth:

21 But how it is he is now able to see, or who made his eyes open, we are not able to say: put the question to him; he is old enough to give an answer for himself.

22 Ref They said this because of their fear of the Jews: for the Jews had come to an agreement that if any man said that Jesus was the Christ he would be put out of the Synagogue.

23 Ref That was the reason why they said, He is old enough; put the question to him.

24 Ref So they sent a second time for the man who had been blind and they said to him, Give glory to God: it is clear to us that this man is a sinner.

25 Ref He said in answer, I have no knowledge if he is a sinner or not, but one thing I am certain about; I was blind, and now I see.

26 Then they said to him, What did he do to you? how did he give you the use of your eyes?

27 Ref His answer was: I have said it before, but your ears were shut: why would you have me say it again? is it your desire to become his disciples?

28 Ref And they were angry with him and said, You are his disciple, but we are disciples of Moses.

29 Ref We are certain that God gave his word to Moses: but as for this man, we have no knowledge where he comes from.

30 Ref The man said in answer, Why, here is a strange thing! You have no knowledge where he comes from though he gave me the use of my eyes.

31 Ref We have knowledge that God does not give ear to sinners, but if any man is a worshipper of God and does his pleasure, to him God's ears are open.

32 Ref In all the years nobody has ever before seen the eyes of a man blind from birth made open.

33 Ref If this man did not come from God he would be unable to do anything.

34 Ref Their answer was: You came to birth through sin; do you make yourself our teacher? And they put him out of the Synagogue.

35 Ref It came to the ears of Jesus that they had put him out, and meeting him he said, Have you faith in the Son of man?

36 Ref He said in answer, And who is he, Lord? Say, so that I may have faith in him.

37 Ref Jesus said to him, You have seen him; it is he who is talking to you.

38 Ref And he said, Lord, I have faith. And he gave him worship.

39 Ref And Jesus said, I came into this world to be a judge, so that those who do not see may see, and those who see may become blind.

40 Ref These words came to the ears of the Pharisees who were with him and they said to him, Are we, then, blind?

41 Ref Jesus said to them, If you were blind you would have no sin: but now that you say, We see; your sin is there still.

King James Version (KJV)

1 And as Jesus passed by, he saw a man which was blind from his birth.

2 Ref And his disciples asked him, saying, Master, who did sin, this man, or his parents, that he was born blind?

3 Ref Jesus answered, Neither hath this man sinned, nor his parents: but that the works of God should be made manifest in him.

4 Ref I must work the works of him that sent me, while it is day: the night cometh, when no man can work.

5 Ref As long as I am in the world, I am the light of the world.

6 Ref When he had thus spoken, he spat on the ground, and made clay of the spittle, and he anointed the eyes of the blind man with the clay,

7 Ref And said unto him, Go, wash in the pool of Siloam, (which is by interpretation, Sent.) He went his way therefore, and washed, and came seeing.

8 Ref The neighbours therefore, and they which before had seen him that he was blind, said, Is not this he that sat and begged?

9 Some said, This is he: others said, He is like him: but he said, I am he.

10 Ref Therefore said they unto him, How were thine eyes opened?

11 Ref He answered and said, A man that is called Jesus made clay, and anointed mine eyes, and said unto me, Go to the pool of Siloam, and wash: and I went and washed, and I received sight.

12 Ref Then said they unto him, Where is he? He said, I know not.

13 Ref They brought to the Pharisees him that aforetime was blind.

14 Ref And it was the sabbath day when Jesus made the clay, and opened his eyes.

15 Ref Then again the Pharisees also asked him how he had received his sight. He said unto them, He put clay upon mine eyes, and I washed, and do see.

16 Ref Therefore said some of the Pharisees, This man is not of God, because he keepeth not the sabbath day. Others said, How can a man that is a sinner do such miracles? And there was a division among them.

17 Ref They say unto the blind man again, What sayest thou of him, that he hath opened thine eyes? He said, He is a prophet.

18 Ref But the Jews did not believe concerning him, that he had been blind, and received his sight, until they called the parents of him that had received his sight.

19 Ref And they asked them, saying, Is this your son, who ye say was born blind? how then doth he now see?

20 His parents answered them and said, We know that this is our son, and that he was born blind:

21 But by what means he now seeth, we know not; or who hath opened his eyes, we know not: he is of age; ask him: he shall speak for himself.

22 Ref These words spake his parents, because they feared the Jews: for the Jews had agreed already, that if any man did confess that he was Christ, he should be put out of the synagogue.

23 Ref Therefore said his parents, He is of age; ask him.

24 Ref Then again called they the man that was blind, and said unto him, Give God the praise: we know that this man is a sinner.

25 Ref He answered and said, Whether he be a sinner or no, I know not: one thing I know, that, whereas I was blind, now I see.

26 Then said they to him again, What did he to thee? how opened he thine eyes?

27 Ref He answered them, I have told you already, and ye did not hear: wherefore would ye hear it again? will ye also be his disciples?

28 Ref Then they reviled him, and said, Thou art his disciple; but we are Moses' disciples.

29 Ref We know that God spake unto Moses: as for this fellow, we know not from whence he is.

30 Ref The man answered and said unto them, Why herein is a marvellous thing, that ye know not from whence he is, and yet he hath opened mine eyes.

31 Ref Now we know that God heareth not sinners: but if any man be a worshipper of God, and doeth his will, him he heareth.

32 Ref Since the world began was it not heard that any man opened the eyes of one that was born blind.

33 Ref If this man were not of God, he could do nothing.

34 Ref They answered and said unto him, Thou wast altogether born in sins, and dost thou teach us? And they cast him out.

35 Ref Jesus heard that they had cast him out; and when he had found him, he said unto him, Dost thou believe on the Son of God?

36 Ref He answered and said, Who is he, Lord, that I might believe on him?

37 Ref And Jesus said unto him, Thou hast both seen him, and it is he that talketh with thee.

38 Ref And he said, Lord, I believe. And he worshipped him.

39 Ref And Jesus said, For judgment I am come into this world, that they which see not might see; and that they which see might be made blind.

40 Ref And some of the Pharisees which were with him heard these words, and said unto him, Are we blind also?

41 Ref Jesus said unto them, If ye were blind, ye should have no sin: but now ye say, We see; therefore your sin remaineth.
