1 Corinthians 10
Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
1 Ref And I do not wish you to be ignorant, brethren, that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea,
2 Ref and all to Moses were baptized in the cloud, and in the sea;
3 Ref and all the same spiritual food did eat,
4 Ref and all the same spiritual drink did drink, for they were drinking of a spiritual rock following them, and the rock was the Christ;
5 Ref but in the most of them God was not well pleased, for they were strewn in the wilderness,
6 Ref and those things became types of us, for our not passionately desiring evil things, as also these did desire.
7 Ref Neither become ye idolaters, as certain of them, as it hath been written, `The people sat down to eat and to drink, and stood up to play;'
8 Ref neither may we commit whoredom, as certain of them did commit whoredom, and there fell in one day twenty-three thousand;
9 Ref neither may we tempt the Christ, as also certain of them did tempt, and by the serpents did perish;
10 Ref neither murmur ye, as also some of them did murmur, and did perish by the destroyer.
11 Ref And all these things as types did happen to those persons, and they were written for our admonition, to whom the end of the ages did come,
12 Ref so that he who is thinking to stand -- let him observe, lest he fall.
13 Ref No temptation hath taken you -- except human; and God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above what ye are able, but He will make, with the temptation, also the outlet, for your being able to bear `it'.
14 Ref Wherefore, my beloved, flee from the idolatry;
15 Ref as to wise men I speak -- judge ye what I say:
16 Ref The cup of the blessing that we bless -- is it not the fellowship of the blood of the Christ? the bread that we break -- is it not the fellowship of the body of the Christ?
17 Ref because one bread, one body, are we the many -- for we all of the one bread do partake.
18 Ref See Israel according to the flesh! are not those eating the sacrifices in the fellowship of the altar?
19 Ref what then do I say? that an idol is anything? or that a sacrifice offered to an idol is anything? --
20 Ref `no,' but that the things that the nations sacrifice -- they sacrifice to demons and not to God; and I do not wish you to come into the fellowship of the demons.
21 Ref Ye are not able the cup of the Lord to drink, and the cup of demons; ye are not able of the table of the Lord to partake, and of the table of demons;
22 Ref do we arouse the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than He?
23 Ref All things to me are lawful, but all things are not profitable; all things to me are lawful, but all things do not build up;
24 Ref let no one seek his own -- but each another's.
25 Ref Whatever in the meat-market is sold eat ye, not inquiring, because of the conscience,
26 Ref for the Lord's `is' the earth, and its fulness;
27 Ref and if any one of the unbelieving do call you, and ye wish to go, all that is set before you eat, nothing inquiring, because of the conscience;
28 Ref and if any one may say to you, `This is a thing sacrificed to an idol,' -- do not eat, because of that one who shewed `it', and of the conscience, for the Lord's `is' the earth and its fulness:
29 Ref and conscience, I say, not of thyself, but of the other, for why `is it' that my liberty is judged by another's conscience?
30 Ref and if I thankfully do partake, why am I evil spoken of, for that for which I give thanks?
31 Ref Whether, then, ye eat, or drink, or do anything, do all to the glory of God;
32 Ref become offenceless, both to Jews and Greeks, and to the assembly of God;
33 Ref as I also in all things do please all, not seeking my own profit, but that of many -- that they may be saved.
King James Version (KJV)
1 Ref Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant, how that all our fathers were under the cloud, and all passed through the sea;
2 Ref And were all baptized unto Moses in the cloud and in the sea;
3 Ref And did all eat the same spiritual meat;
4 Ref And did all drink the same spiritual drink: for they drank of that spiritual Rock that followed them: and that Rock was Christ.
5 Ref But with many of them God was not well pleased: for they were overthrown in the wilderness.
6 Ref Now these things were our examples, to the intent we should not lust after evil things, as they also lusted.
7 Ref Neither be ye idolaters, as were some of them; as it is written, The people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
8 Ref Neither let us commit fornication, as some of them committed, and fell in one day three and twenty thousand.
9 Ref Neither let us tempt Christ, as some of them also tempted, and were destroyed of serpents.
10 Ref Neither murmur ye, as some of them also murmured, and were destroyed of the destroyer.
11 Ref Now all these things happened unto them for ensamples: and they are written for our admonition, upon whom the ends of the world are come.
12 Ref Wherefore let him that thinketh he standeth take heed lest he fall.
13 Ref There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
14 Ref Wherefore, my dearly beloved, flee from idolatry.
15 Ref I speak as to wise men; judge ye what I say.
16 Ref The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not the communion of the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, is it not the communion of the body of Christ?
17 Ref For we being many are one bread, and one body: for we are all partakers of that one bread.
18 Ref Behold Israel after the flesh: are not they which eat of the sacrifices partakers of the altar?
19 Ref What say I then? that the idol is any thing, or that which is offered in sacrifice to idols is any thing?
20 Ref But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.
21 Ref Ye cannot drink the cup of the Lord, and the cup of devils: ye cannot be partakers of the Lord's table, and of the table of devils.
22 Ref Do we provoke the Lord to jealousy? are we stronger than he?
23 Ref All things are lawful for me, but all things are not expedient: all things are lawful for me, but all things edify not.
24 Ref Let no man seek his own, but every man another's wealth.
25 Ref Whatsoever is sold in the shambles, that eat, asking no question for conscience sake:
26 Ref For the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof.
27 Ref If any of them that believe not bid you to a feast, and ye be disposed to go; whatsoever is set before you, eat, asking no question for conscience sake.
28 Ref But if any man say unto you, This is offered in sacrifice unto idols, eat not for his sake that shewed it, and for conscience sake: for the earth is the Lord's, and the fulness thereof:
29 Ref Conscience, I say, not thine own, but of the other: for why is my liberty judged of another man's conscience?
30 Ref For if I by grace be a partaker, why am I evil spoken of for that for which I give thanks?
31 Ref Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.
32 Ref Give none offence, neither to the Jews, nor to the Gentiles, nor to the church of God:
33 Ref Even as I please all men in all things, not seeking mine own profit, but the profit of many, that they may be saved.
