John 19

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Ref Then, therefore, did Pilate take Jesus and scourge `him',

2 Ref and the soldiers having plaited a crown of thorns, did place `it' on his head, and a purple garment they put around him,

3 Ref and said, `Hail! the king of the Jews;' and they were giving him slaps.

4 Ref Pilate, therefore, again went forth without, and saith to them, `Lo, I do bring him to you without, that ye may know that in him I find no fault;'

5 Ref Jesus, therefore, came forth without, bearing the thorny crown and the purple garment; and he saith to them, `Lo, the man!'

6 Ref When, therefore, the chief priests and the officers did see him, they cried out, saying, `Crucify, crucify;' Pilate saith to them, `Take ye him -- ye, and crucify; for I find no fault in him;'

7 Ref the Jews answered him, `We have a law, and according to our law he ought to die, for he made himself Son of God.'

8 Ref When, therefore, Pilate heard this word, he was the more afraid,

9 Ref and entered again to the praetorium, and saith to Jesus, `Whence art thou?' and Jesus gave him no answer.

10 Ref Pilate, therefore, saith to him, `To me dost thou not speak? hast thou not known that I have authority to crucify thee, and I have authority to release thee?'

11 Ref Jesus answered, `Thou wouldst have no authority against me, if it were not having been given thee from above; because of this, he who is delivering me up to thee hath greater sin.'

12 Ref From this `time' was Pilate seeking to release him, and the Jews were crying out, saying, `If this one thou mayest release, thou art not a friend of Caesar; every one making himself a king, doth speak against Caesar.'

13 Ref Pilate, therefore, having heard this word, brought Jesus without -- and he sat down upon the tribunal -- to a place called, `Pavement,' and in Hebrew, Gabbatha;

14 Ref and it was the preparation of the passover, and as it were the sixth hour, and he saith to the Jews, `Lo, your king!'

15 Ref and they cried out, `Take away, take away, crucify him;' Pilate saith to them, `Your king shall I crucify?' the chief priests answered, `We have no king except Caesar.'

16 Ref Then, therefore, he delivered him up to them, that he may be crucified, and they took Jesus and led `him' away,

17 Ref and bearing his cross, he went forth to the place called `Place' of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew Golgotha;

18 Ref where they crucified him, and with him two others, on this side, and on that side, and Jesus in the midst.

19 Ref And Pilate also wrote a title, and put `it' on the cross, and it was written, `Jesus the Nazarene, the king of the Jews;'

20 Ref this title, therefore, read many of the Jews, because the place was nigh to the city where Jesus was crucified, and it was having been written in Hebrew, in Greek, in Roman.

21 Ref The chief priests of the Jews said, therefore, to Pilate, `Write not -- The king of the Jews, but that one said, I am king of the Jews;'

22 Ref Pilate answered, `What I have written, I have written.'

23 Ref The soldiers, therefore, when they did crucify Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to each soldier a part, also the coat, and the coat was seamless, from the top woven throughout,

24 Ref they said, therefore, to one another, `We may not rend it, but cast a lot for it, whose it shall be;' that the Writing might be fulfilled, that is saying, `They divided my garments to themselves, and upon my raiment they did cast a lot;' the soldiers, therefore, indeed, did these things.

25 Ref And there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary of Cleopas, and Mary the Magdalene;

26 Ref Jesus, therefore, having seen `his' mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he was loving, he saith to his mother, `Woman, lo, thy son;'

27 Ref afterward he saith to the disciple, `Lo, thy mother;' and from that hour the disciple took her to his own `home'.

28 Ref After this, Jesus knowing that all things now have been finished, that the Writing may be fulfilled, saith, `I thirst;'

29 Ref a vessel, therefore, was placed full of vinegar, and they having filled a sponge with vinegar, and having put `it' around a hyssop stalk, did put `it' to his mouth;

30 Ref when, therefore, Jesus received the vinegar, he said, `It hath been finished;' and having bowed the head, gave up the spirit.

31 Ref The Jews, therefore, that the bodies might not remain on the cross on the sabbath, since it was the preparation, (for that sabbath day was a great one,) asked of Pilate that their legs may be broken, and they taken away.

32 Ref The soldiers, therefore, came, and of the first indeed they did break the legs, and of the other who was crucified with him,

33 and having come to Jesus, when they saw him already having been dead, they did not break his legs;

34 Ref but one of the soldiers with a spear did pierce his side, and immediately there came forth blood and water;

35 Ref and he who hath seen hath testified, and his testimony is true, and that one hath known that true things he speaketh, that ye also may believe.

36 Ref For these things came to pass, that the Writing may be fulfilled, `A bone of him shall not be broken;'

37 Ref and again another Writing saith, `They shall look to him whom they did pierce.'

38 Ref And after these things did Joseph of Arimathea -- being a disciple of Jesus, but concealed, through the fear of the Jews -- ask of Pilate, that he may take away the body of Jesus, and Pilate gave leave; he came, therefore, and took away the body of Jesus,

39 Ref and Nicodemus also came -- who came unto Jesus by night at the first -- bearing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, as it were, a hundred pounds.

40 Ref They took, therefore, the body of Jesus, and bound it with linen clothes with the spices, according as it was the custom of the Jews to prepare for burial;

41 Ref and there was in the place where he was crucified a garden, and in the garden a new tomb, in which no one was yet laid;

42 Ref there, therefore, because of the preparation of the Jews, because the tomb was nigh, they laid Jesus.

King James Version (KJV)

1 Ref Then Pilate therefore took Jesus, and scourged him.

2 Ref And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple robe,

3 Ref And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.

4 Ref Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that I find no fault in him.

5 Ref Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the man!

6 Ref When the chief priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and crucify him: for I find no fault in him.

7 Ref The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God.

8 Ref When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid;

9 Ref And went again into the judgment hall, and saith unto Jesus, Whence art thou? But Jesus gave him no answer.

10 Ref Then saith Pilate unto him, Speakest thou not unto me? knowest thou not that I have power to crucify thee, and have power to release thee?

11 Ref Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

12 Ref And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him: but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Caesar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a king speaketh against Caesar.

13 Ref When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus forth, and sat down in the judgment seat in a place that is called the Pavement, but in the Hebrew, Gabbatha.

14 Ref And it was the preparation of the passover, and about the sixth hour: and he saith unto the Jews, Behold your King!

15 Ref But they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The chief priests answered, We have no king but Caesar.

16 Ref Then delivered he him therefore unto them to be crucified. And they took Jesus, and led him away.

17 Ref And he bearing his cross went forth into a place called the place of a skull, which is called in the Hebrew Golgotha:

18 Ref Where they crucified him, and two other with him, on either side one, and Jesus in the midst.

19 Ref And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.

20 Ref This title then read many of the Jews: for the place where Jesus was crucified was nigh to the city: and it was written in Hebrew, and Greek, and Latin.

21 Ref Then said the chief priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.

22 Ref Pilate answered, What I have written I have written.

23 Ref Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took his garments, and made four parts, to every soldier a part; and also his coat: now the coat was without seam, woven from the top throughout.

24 Ref They said therefore among themselves, Let us not rend it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be: that the scripture might be fulfilled, which saith, They parted my raiment among them, and for my vesture they did cast lots. These things therefore the soldiers did.

25 Ref Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother's sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.

26 Ref When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!

27 Ref Then saith he to the disciple, Behold thy mother! And from that hour that disciple took her unto his own home.

28 Ref After this, Jesus knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the scripture might be fulfilled, saith, I thirst.

29 Ref Now there was set a vessel full of vinegar: and they filled a spunge with vinegar, and put it upon hyssop, and put it to his mouth.

30 Ref When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.

31 Ref The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day, (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

32 Ref Then came the soldiers, and brake the legs of the first, and of the other which was crucified with him.

33 But when they came to Jesus, and saw that he was dead already, they brake not his legs:

34 Ref But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.

35 Ref And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.

36 Ref For these things were done, that the scripture should be fulfilled, A bone of him shall not be broken.

37 Ref And again another scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.

38 Ref And after this Joseph of Arimathaea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly for fear of the Jews, besought Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus: and Pilate gave him leave. He came therefore, and took the body of Jesus.

39 Ref And there came also Nicodemus, which at the first came to Jesus by night, and brought a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about an hundred pound weight.

40 Ref Then took they the body of Jesus, and wound it in linen clothes with the spices, as the manner of the Jews is to bury.

41 Ref Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden; and in the garden a new sepulchre, wherein was never man yet laid.

42 Ref There laid they Jesus therefore because of the Jews' preparation day; for the sepulchre was nigh at hand.
