^{1 Ref} And thou, son of man, prophesy unto mountains of Israel, and thou hast said, O mountains of Israel, hear a word of Jehovah.

^{2 Ref} Thus said the Lord Jehovah: Because the enemy said against you, Aha, and the high places of old for a possession have been to us,

^{3 Ref} therefore, prophesy, and thou hast said: Thus said the Lord Jehovah: Because, even because, of desolating, And of swallowing you up from round about, For your being a possession to the remnant of the nations, And ye are taken up on the tip of the tongue, And `are' an evil report of the people.

^{4 Ref} Therefore, O mountains of Israel, Hear a word of the Lord Jehovah: Thus said the Lord Jehovah, to mountains, and to hills, To streams, and to valleys, And to wastes that `are' desolate, And to cities that are forsaken, That have been for a prey, And for a scorn, to the remnant of the nations who `are' round about.

^{5 Ref} Therefore, thus said the Lord Jehovah: Have I not, in the fire of My jealousy, Spoken against the remnant of the nations, And against Edom -- all of it, Who gave My land to themselves for a possession, With the joy of the whole heart -- with despite of soul, For the sake of casting it out for a prey?

^{6 Ref} Therefore, prophesy concerning the ground of Israel, And thou hast said to mountains, and to hills, To streams, and to valleys, Thus said the Lord Jehovah: Lo, I, in My jealousy, and in My fury, I have spoken, Because the shame of nations ye have borne.

^{7 Ref} Therefore, thus said the Lord Jehovah: I -- I have lifted up My hand, Do not -- the nations who `are' with you from round about -- they their own shame bear?

^{8 Ref} And ye, O mountains of Israel, Your branch ye give out, and your fruits ye bear for My people Israel, For they have drawn near to come.

^{9 Ref} For, lo, I `am' for you, and have turned to you, And ye have been tilled and sown.

^{10 Ref} And I have multiplied on you men, All the house of Israel -- all of it, And the cities have been inhabited, And the wastes are built.

^{11 Ref} And I have multiplied on you man and beast, And they have multiplied and been fruitful, And I have caused you to dwell according to your former states, And I have done better than at your beginnings, And ye have known that I `am' Jehovah.

^{12 Ref} And I have caused man to walk over you, -- My people Israel, And they possess thee, and thou hast been to them for an inheritance, And thou dost add no more to bereave them.

^{13 Ref} Thus said the Lord Jehovah: Because they are saying to you: A devourer of men `art' thou, And a bereaver of thy nations thou hast been,

^{14 Ref} Therefore, man thou devourest no more, And thy nations thou causest not to stumble any more, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah.

^{15 Ref} And I proclaim not unto thee any more the shame of the nations, And the reproach of peoples thou bearest no more, And thy nations stumble not any more, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah.'

¹⁶ And there is a word of Jehovah unto me, saying,

^{17 Ref} `Son of man, The house of Israel are dwelling on their land, And they defile it by their way and by their doings, As the uncleanness of a separated one hath their way been before Me.

^{18 Ref} And I do pour out My fury upon them For the blood that they shed on the land, And with their idols they have defiled it.

^{19 Ref} And I scatter them among nations, And they are spread through lands, According to their way, and according to their doings, I have judged them.

^{20 Ref} And one goeth in unto the nations whither they have gone, And they pollute My holy name by saying to them, The people of Jehovah `are' these, And from His land they have gone forth.

^{21 Ref} And I have pity on My holy name, That the house of Israel have polluted among nations whither they have gone in.

^{22 Ref} Therefore, say to the house of Israel, Thus said the Lord Jehovah: Not for your sake am I working, O house of Israel, But -- for My holy name, That ye have polluted among nations whither ye have gone in.

^{23 Ref} And I have sanctified My great name, That is profaned among nations, That ye have polluted in your midst, And known have the nations that I `am' Jehovah, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah, In My being sanctified in you before your eyes.

^{24 Ref} And I have taken you out of the nations, And have gathered you out of all the lands, And I have brought you in unto your land,

^{25 Ref} And I have sprinkled over you clean water, And ye have been clean; From all your uncleannesses, and from all your idols, I do cleanse you.

^{26 Ref} And I have given to you a new heart, And a new spirit I give in your midst, And I have turned aside the heart of stone out of your flesh, And I have given to you a heart of flesh.

^{27 Ref} And My Spirit I give in your midst, And I have done this, so that in My statutes ye walk, And My judgments ye keep, and have done them.

^{28 Ref} And ye have dwelt in the land that I have given to your fathers, And ye have been to Me for a people, And I -- I am to you for God.

^{29 Ref} And I have saved you from all your uncleannesses, And I have called unto the corn, and multiplied it, And I have put no famine upon you.

^{30 Ref} And I have multiplied the fruit of the tree, And the increase of the field, So that ye receive not any more a reproach of famine among nations.

^{31 Ref} And ye have remembered your ways that `are' evil, And your doings that `are' not good, And have been loathsome in your own faces, For your iniquities, and for your abominations.

^{32 Ref} Not for your sake am I working, An affirmation of the Lord Jehovah, Be it known to you, Be ashamed and confounded, because of your ways, O house of Israel.

^{33 Ref} Thus said the Lord Jehovah: In the day of My cleansing you from all your iniquities, I have caused the cities to be inhabited, And the wastes have been built,

^{34 Ref} And the desolate land is tilled, Instead of which it was a desolation before the eyes of every passer by,

^{35 Ref} And they have said: This land, that was desolated, Hath been as the garden of Eden, And the cities -- the wasted, And the desolated, and the broken down, Fenced places have remained.

^{36 Ref} And known have the nations who are left round about you, That I Jehovah have built the thrown down, I have planted the desolated: I Jehovah have spoken, and I have done `it'.

^{37 Ref} Thus said the Lord Jehovah: Yet this I am required, By the house of Israel to do to them, I multiply them as a flock of men,

^{38 Ref} As a flock of holy ones, as a flock of Jerusalem, In her appointed seasons, So are the waste cities full of flocks of men, And they have known that I `am' Jehovah!'

^{1 Ref} You, son of man, prophesy to the mountains of Israel, and say, You mountains of Israel, hear the word of Yahweh.

^{2 Ref} Thus says the Lord Yahweh: Because the enemy has said against you, Aha! and, The ancient high places are ours in possession;

^{3 Ref} therefore prophesy, and say, Thus says the Lord Yahweh: Because, even because they have made you desolate, and swallowed you up on every side, that you might be a possession to the residue of the nations, and you are taken up in the lips of talkers, and the evil report of the people;

^{4 Ref} therefore, you mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord Yahweh: Thus says the Lord Yahweh to the mountains and to the hills, to the watercourses and to the valleys, to the desolate wastes and to the cities that are forsaken, which are become a prey and derision to the residue of the nations that are round about;

^{5 Ref} therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: Surely in the fire of my jealousy have I spoken against the residue of the nations, and against all Edom, that have appointed my land to themselves for a possession with the joy of all their heart, with despite of soul, to cast it out for a prey.

^{6 Ref} Therefore prophesy concerning the land of Israel, and tell the mountains and to the hills, to the watercourses and to the valleys, Thus says the Lord Yahweh: Behold, I have spoken in my jealousy and in my wrath, because you have borne the shame of the nations:

^{7 Ref} therefore thus says the Lord Yahweh: I have sworn, [saying], Surely the nations that are round about you, they shall bear their shame.

^{8 Ref} But you, mountains of Israel, you shall shoot forth your branches, and yield your fruit to my people Israel; for they are at hand to come.

^{9 Ref} For, behold, I am for you, and I will turn into you, and you shall be tilled and sown;

^{10 Ref} and I will multiply men on you, all the house of Israel, even all of it; and the cities shall be inhabited, and the waste places shall be built;

^{11 Ref} and I will multiply on you man and animal; and they shall increase and be fruitful; and I will cause you to be inhabited after your former estate, and will do better [to you] than at your beginnings: and you shall know that I am Yahweh.

^{12 Ref} Yes, I will cause men to walk on you, even my people Israel; and they shall possess you, and you shall be their inheritance, and you shall no more henceforth bereave them of children.

^{13 Ref} Thus says the Lord Yahweh: Because they say to you, You [land] are a devourer of men, and have been a bereaver of your nation;

^{14 Ref} therefore you shall devour men no more, neither bereave your nation any more, says the Lord Yahweh;

^{15 Ref} neither will I let you hear any more the shame of the nations, neither shall you bear the reproach of the peoples any more, neither shall you cause your nation to stumble any more, says the Lord Yahweh.

¹⁶ Moreover the word of Yahweh came to me, saying,

^{17 Ref} Son of man, when the house of Israel lived in their own land, they defiled it by their way and by their doings: their way before me was as the uncleanness of a woman in her impurity.

^{18 Ref} Therefore I poured out my wrath on them for the blood which they had poured out on the land, and because they had defiled it with their idols;

^{19 Ref} and I scattered them among the nations, and they were dispersed through the countries: according to their way and according to their doings I judged them.

^{20 Ref} When they came to the nations, where they went, they profaned my holy name; in that men said of them, These are the people of Yahweh, and are gone forth out of his land.

^{21 Ref} But I had regard for my holy name, which the house of Israel had profaned among the nations, where they went.

^{22 Ref} Therefore tell the house of Israel, Thus says the Lord Yahweh: I don't do [this] for your sake, house of Israel, but for my holy name, which you have profaned among the nations, where you went.

^{23 Ref} I will sanctify my great name, which has been profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in the midst of them; and the nations shall know that I am Yahweh, says the Lord Yahweh, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes.

^{24 Ref} For I will take you from among the nations, and gather you out of all the countries, and will bring you into your own land.

^{25 Ref} I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you.

^{26 Ref} A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you; and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.

^{27 Ref} I will put my Spirit within you, and cause you to walk in my statutes, and you shall keep my ordinances, and do them.

^{28 Ref} You shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and you shall be my people, and I will be your God.

^{29 Ref} I will save you from all your uncleanness: and I will call for the grain, and will multiply it, and lay no famine on you.

^{30 Ref} I will multiply the fruit of the tree, and the increase of the field, that you may receive no more the reproach of famine among the nations.

^{31 Ref} Then shall you remember your evil ways, and your doings that were not good; and you shall loathe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquities and for your abominations.

^{32 Ref} Nor for your sake do I [this], says the Lord Yahweh, be it known to you: be ashamed and confounded for your ways, house of Israel.

^{33 Ref} Thus says the Lord Yahweh: In the day that I cleanse you from all your iniquities, I will cause the cities to be inhabited, and the waste places shall be built.

^{34 Ref} The land that was desolate shall be tilled, whereas it was a desolation in the sight of all who passed by.

^{35 Ref} They shall say, This land that was desolate is become like the garden of Eden; and the waste and desolate and ruined cities are fortified and inhabited.

^{36 Ref} Then the nations that are left round about you shall know that I, Yahweh, have built the ruined places, and planted that which was desolate: I, Yahweh, have spoken it, and I will do it.

^{37 Ref} Thus says the Lord Yahweh: For this, moreover, will I be inquired of by the house of Israel, to do it for them: I will increase them with men like a flock.

^{38 Ref} As the flock for sacrifice, as the flock of Jerusalem in her appointed feasts, so shall the waste cities be filled with flocks of men; and they shall know that I am Yahweh.

^{1 Ref} And you, son of man, be a prophet about the mountains of Israel, and say, You mountains of Israel, give ear to the word of the Lord:

^{2 Ref} This is what the Lord has said: Because your hater has said against you, Aha! and, The old waste places are our heritage, we have taken them:

^{3 Ref} For this cause be a prophet, and say, This is what the Lord has said: Because, even because they have been glad over you and put you to shame on every side, because you have become a heritage for the rest of the nations, and you are taken up on the lips of talkers and in the evil talk of the people:

^{4 Ref} For this reason, you mountains of Israel, give ear to the word of the Lord; this is what the Lord has said to the mountains and to the hills, to the streams and to the valleys, to the unpeopled wastes and to the towns where no one is living, from which the goods have been taken and which have been put to shame by the rest of the nations who are round about:

^{5 Ref} For this cause the Lord has said: Truly, in the heat of my bitter feeling I have said things against the rest of the nations and against all Edom, who have taken my land as a heritage for themselves with the joy of all their heart, and with bitter envy of soul have made attacks on it:

^{6 Ref} For this cause be a prophet about the land of Israel, and say to the mountains and to the hills, to the streams and to the valleys, This is what the Lord has said: Truly, in my bitter feeling and in my wrath I have said these things, because you have undergone the shame of the nations:

^{7 Ref} For this cause the Lord has said, See, I have taken an oath that the nations which are round about you are themselves to undergo the shame which they have put on you.

^{8 Ref} But you, O mountains of Israel, will put out your branches and give your fruit to my people Israel; for they are ready to come.

^{9 Ref} For truly I am for you, and I will be turned to you, and you will be ploughed and planted:

^{10 Ref} And I will let your numbers be increased, all the children of Israel, even all of them: and the towns will be peopled and the waste places will have buildings;

^{11 Ref} Man and beast will be increased in you, and they will have offspring and be fertile: I will make you thickly peopled as you were before, and will do more for you than at the first: and you will be certain that I am the Lord.

^{12 Ref} Yes, I will have you walked on by the feet of men, even my people Israel; they will have you for a heritage and you will be theirs, and never again will you take their children from them.

^{13 Ref} This is what the Lord has said: Because they say to you, You, O land, are the destruction of men, causing loss of children to your nation;

^{14 Ref} For this reason you will no longer take the lives of men and will never again be the cause of loss of children to your nation, says the Lord.

^{15 Ref} And I will not let the shaming of the nations come to your ears, and no longer will you be looked down on by the peoples, says the Lord.

¹⁶ Then the word of the Lord came to me, saying,

^{17 Ref} Son of man, when the children of Israel were living in their land, they made it unclean by their way and their acts: their way before me was as when a woman is unclean at the time when she is kept separate.

^{18 Ref} So I let loose my wrath on them because of those whom they had violently put to death in the land, and because they had made it unclean with their images:

^{19 Ref} And I sent them in flight among the nations and wandering through the countries: I was their judge, rewarding them for their way and their acts.

^{20 Ref} And when they came among the nations, wherever they went, they made my holy name unclean, when it was said of them, These are the people of the Lord who have gone out from his land.

^{21 Ref} But I had pity for my holy name which the children of Israel had made unclean wherever they went.

^{22 Ref} For this cause say to the children of Israel, This is what the Lord has said: I am doing this, not because of you, O children of Israel, but because of my holy name, which you have made unclean among the nations wherever you went.

^{23 Ref} And I will make holy my great name which has been made unclean among the nations, which you have made unclean among them; and it will be clear to the nations that I am the Lord, says the Lord, when I make myself holy in you before their eyes.

^{24 Ref} For I will take you out from among the nations, and get you together from all the countries, and take you into your land.

^{25 Ref} And I will put clean water on you so that you may be clean: from all your unclean ways and from all your images I will make you clean.

^{26 Ref} And I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you: I will take away the heart of stone from your flesh, and give you a heart of flesh.

^{27 Ref} And I will put my spirit in you, causing you to be guided by my rules, and you will keep my orders and do them.

^{28 Ref} So that you may go on living in the land which I gave to your fathers; and you will be to me a people, and I will be to you a God.

^{29 Ref} And I will make you free from all your unclean ways: and at my voice the grain will come up and be increased, and I will not let you be short of food.

^{30 Ref} And I will make the tree give more fruit and the field fuller produce, and no longer will you be shamed among the nations for need of food.

^{31 Ref} And at the memory of your evil ways and your wrongdoings, you will have bitter hate for yourselves because of your evil-doings and your disgusting ways, O children of Israel.

^{32 Ref} Not because of you am I doing it, says the Lord; let it be clear to you, and be shamed and made low because of your ways, O children of Israel.

^{33 Ref} This is what the Lord has said: In the day when I make you clean from all your evil-doings I will let the towns be peopled and there will be building on the waste places.

^{34 Ref} And the land which was waste will be farmed, in place of being a waste in the eyes of everyone who went by.

^{35 Ref} And they will say, This land which was waste has become like the garden of Eden; and the towns which were unpeopled and wasted and pulled down are walled and peopled.

^{36 Ref} Then the rest of the nations round about you will be certain that I the Lord am the builder of the places which were pulled down and the planter of that which was waste: I the Lord have said it, and I will do it.

^{37 Ref} This is what the Lord has said: The children of Israel will again make prayer to me for this, that I may do it for them; I will make them increased with men like a flock.

^{38 Ref} Like sheep for the offerings, like the sheep of Jerusalem at her fixed feasts, so the unpeopled towns will be made full of men: and they will be certain that I am the Lord.
