^{1 Ref} Then come unto Jesus do they from Jerusalem -- scribes and Pharisees -- saying,

^{2 Ref} `Wherefore do thy disciples transgress the tradition of the elders? for they do not wash their hands when they may eat bread.'

^{3 Ref} And he answering said to them, `Wherefore also do ye transgress the command of God because of your tradition?

^{4 Ref} for God did command, saying, Honour thy father and mother; and, He who is speaking evil of father or mother -- let him die the death;

^{5 Ref} but ye say, Whoever may say to father or mother, An offering `is' whatever thou mayest be profited by me; --

^{6 Ref} and he may not honour his father or his mother, and ye did set aside the command of God because of your tradition.

^{7 Ref} `Hypocrites, well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,

^{8 Ref} This people doth draw nigh to Me with their mouth, and with the lips it doth honour Me, but their heart is far off from Me;

^{9 Ref} and in vain do they worship Me, teaching teachings -- commands of men.'

^{10 Ref} And having called near the multitude, he said to them, `Hear and understand:

^{11 Ref} not that which is coming into the mouth doth defile the man, but that which is coming forth from the mouth, this defileth the man.'

^{12 Ref} Then his disciples having come near, said to him, `Hast thou known that the Pharisees, having heard the word, were stumbled?'

^{13 Ref} And he answering said, `Every plant that my heavenly Father did not plant shall be rooted up;

^{14 Ref} let them alone, guides they are -- blind of blind; and if blind may guide blind, both into a ditch shall fall.'

^{15 Ref} And Peter answering said to him, `Explain to us this simile.'

^{16 Ref} And Jesus said, `Are ye also yet without understanding?

^{17 Ref} do ye not understand that all that is going into the mouth doth pass into the belly, and into the drain is cast forth?

^{18 Ref} but the things coming forth from the mouth from the heart do come forth, and these defile the man;

^{19 Ref} for out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, whoredoms, thefts, false witnessings, evil speakings:

^{20 Ref} these are the things defiling the man; but to eat with unwashen hands doth not defile the man.'

^{21 Ref} And Jesus having come forth thence, withdrew to the parts of Tyre and Sidon,

^{22 Ref} and lo, a woman, a Canaanitess, from those borders having come forth, did call to him, saying, `Deal kindly with me, Sir -- Son of David; my daughter is miserably demonized.'

^{23 Ref} And he did not answer her a word; and his disciples having come to him, were asking him, saying -- `Let her away, because she crieth after us;'

^{24 Ref} and he answering said, `I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.'

^{25 Ref} And having come, she was bowing to him, saying, `Sir, help me;'

^{26 Ref} and he answering said, `It is not good to take the children's bread, and to cast to the little dogs.'

^{27 Ref} And she said, `Yes, sir, for even the little dogs do eat of the crumbs that are falling from their lords' table;'

^{28 Ref} then answering, Jesus said to her, `O woman, great `is' thy faith, let it be to thee as thou wilt;' and her daughter was healed from that hour.

^{29 Ref} And Jesus having passed thence, came nigh unto the sea of Galilee, and having gone up to the mountain, he was sitting there,

^{30 Ref} and there came to him great multitudes, having with them lame, blind, dumb, maimed, and many others, and they did cast them at the feet of Jesus, and he healed them,

^{31 Ref} so that the multitudes did wonder, seeing dumb ones speaking, maimed whole, lame walking, and blind seeing; and they glorified the God of Israel.

^{32 Ref} And Jesus having called near his disciples, said, `I have compassion upon the multitude, because now three days they continue with me, and they have not what they may eat; and to let them away fasting I will not, lest they faint in the way.'

^{33 Ref} And his disciples say to him, `Whence to us, in a wilderness, so many loaves, as to fill so great a multitude?'

^{34 Ref} And Jesus saith to them, `How many loaves have ye?' and they said, `Seven, and a few little fishes.'

^{35 Ref} And he commanded the multitudes to sit down upon the ground,

^{36 Ref} and having taken the seven loaves and the fishes, having given thanks, he did break, and gave to his disciples, and the disciples to the multitude.

^{37 Ref} And they did all eat, and were filled, and they took up what was over of the broken pieces seven baskets full,

³⁸ and those eating were four thousand men, apart from women and children.

^{39 Ref} And having let away the multitudes, he went into the boat, and did come to the borders of Magdala.

^{1 Ref} Then Pharisees and scribes came to Jesus from Jerusalem, saying,

^{2 Ref} "Why do your disciples disobey the tradition of the elders? For they don't wash their hands when they eat bread."

^{3 Ref} He answered them, "Why do you also disobey the commandment of God because of your tradition?

^{4 Ref} For God commanded, 'Honor your father and your mother,' and, 'He who speaks evil of father or mother, let him be put to death.'

^{5 Ref} But you say, 'Whoever may tell his father or his mother, "Whatever help you might otherwise have gotten from me is a gift devoted to God,"

^{6 Ref} he shall not honor his father or mother.' You have made the commandment of God void because of your tradition.

^{7 Ref} You hypocrites! Well did Isaiah prophesy of you, saying,

^{8 Ref} 'These people draw near to me with their mouth, And honor me with their lips; But their heart is far from me.

^{9 Ref} And in vain do they worship me, Teaching as doctrine rules made by men.'"

^{10 Ref} He summoned the multitude, and said to them, "Hear, and understand.

^{11 Ref} That which enters into the mouth doesn't defile the man; but that which proceeds out of the mouth, this defiles the man."

^{12 Ref} Then the disciples came, and said to him, "Do you know that the Pharisees were offended, when they heard this saying?"

^{13 Ref} But he answered, "Every plant which my heavenly Father didn't plant will be uprooted.

^{14 Ref} Leave them alone. They are blind guides of the blind. If the blind guide the blind, both will fall into a pit."

^{15 Ref} Peter answered him, "Explain the parable to us."

^{16 Ref} So Jesus said, "Do you also still not understand?

^{17 Ref} Don't you understand that whatever goes into the mouth passes into the belly, and then out of the body?

^{18 Ref} But the things which proceed out of the mouth come out of the heart, and they defile the man.

^{19 Ref} For out of the heart come forth evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, sexual sins, thefts, false testimony, and blasphemies.

^{20 Ref} These are the things which defile the man; but to eat with unwashed hands doesn't defile the man."

^{21 Ref} Jesus went out from there, and withdrew into the region of Tyre and Sidon.

^{22 Ref} Behold, a Canaanite woman came out from those borders, and cried, saying, "Have mercy on me, Lord, you son of David! My daughter is severely demonized!"

^{23 Ref} But he answered her not a word. His disciples came and begged him, saying, "Send her away; for she cries after us."

^{24 Ref} But he answered, "I wasn't sent to anyone but the lost sheep of the house of Israel."

^{25 Ref} But she came and worshiped him, saying, "Lord, help me."

^{26 Ref} But he answered, "It is not appropriate to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs."

^{27 Ref} But she said, "Yes, Lord, but even the dogs eat the crumbs which fall from their masters' table."

^{28 Ref} Then Jesus answered her, "Woman, great is your faith! Be it done to you even as you desire." And her daughter was healed from that hour.

^{29 Ref} Jesus departed there, and came near to the sea of Galilee; and he went up into the mountain, and sat there.

^{30 Ref} Great multitudes came to him, having with them the lame, blind, mute, maimed, and many others, and they put them down at his feet. He healed them,

^{31 Ref} so that the multitude wondered when they saw the mute speaking, injured whole, lame walking, and blind seeing--and they glorified the God of Israel.

^{32 Ref} Jesus summoned his disciples and said, "I have compassion on the multitude, because they continue with me now three days and have nothing to eat. I don't want to send them away fasting, or they might faint on the way."

^{33 Ref} The disciples said to him, "Where should we get so many loaves in a deserted place as to satisfy so great a multitude?"

^{34 Ref} Jesus said to them, "How many loaves do you have?" They said, "Seven, and a few small fish."

^{35 Ref} He commanded the multitude to sit down on the ground;

^{36 Ref} and he took the seven loaves and the fish. He gave thanks and broke them, and gave to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.

^{37 Ref} They all ate, and were filled. They took up seven baskets full of the broken pieces that were left over.

³⁸ Those who ate were four thousand men, besides women and children.

^{39 Ref} Then he sent away the multitudes, got into the boat, and came into the borders of Magdala.

^{1 Ref} Then there came to Jesus from Jerusalem Pharisees and scribes, saying,

^{2 Ref} Why do your disciples go against the teaching of the fathers? for they take food with unwashed hands.

^{3 Ref} And in answer he said to them, Why do you, yourselves, go against the word of God on account of the teaching which has been handed down to you?

^{4 Ref} For God said, Give honour to your father and mother: and, He who says evil of father or mother will be put to death.

^{5 Ref} But you say, If a man says to his father or his mother, That by which you might have had profit from me is given to God;

^{6 Ref} There is no need for him to give honour to his father. And you have made the word of God without effect because of your teaching.

^{7 Ref} You false ones, well did Isaiah say of you,

^{8 Ref} These people give me honour with their lips, but their heart is far from me.

^{9 Ref} But their worship is to no purpose, while they give as their teaching the rules of men.

^{10 Ref} And he got the people together and said to them, Give ear, and let my words be clear to you:

^{11 Ref} Not that which goes into the mouth makes a man unclean, but that which comes out of the mouth.

^{12 Ref} Then the disciples came and said to him, Did you see that the Pharisees were troubled when these words came to their ears?

^{13 Ref} But he said in answer, Every plant which my Father in heaven has not put in the earth, will be taken up by the roots.

^{14 Ref} Let them be: they are blind guides. And if a blind man is guiding a blind man, the two will go falling into a hole together.

^{15 Ref} Then Peter said to him, Make the story clear to us.

^{16 Ref} And he said, Are you, like them, still without wisdom?

^{17 Ref} Do you not see that whatever goes into the mouth goes on into the stomach, and is sent out as waste?

^{18 Ref} But the things which come out of the mouth come from the heart; and they make a man unclean.

^{19 Ref} For out of the heart come evil thoughts, the taking of life, broken faith between the married, unclean desires of the flesh, taking of property, false witness, bitter words:

^{20 Ref} These are the things which make a man unclean; but to take food with unwashed hands does not make a man unclean.

^{21 Ref} And Jesus went away from there into the country of Tyre and Sidon.

^{22 Ref} And a woman of Canaan came out from those parts, crying and saying, Have pity on me, O Lord, Son of David; my daughter is greatly troubled with an unclean spirit.

^{23 Ref} But he gave her no answer. And his disciples came and said to him, Send her away, for she is crying after us.

^{24 Ref} But he made answer and said, I was sent only to the wandering sheep of the house of Israel.

^{25 Ref} But she came and gave him worship, saying, Help, Lord.

^{26 Ref} And he made answer and said, It is not right to take the children's bread and give it to the dogs.

^{27 Ref} But she said, Yes, Lord: but even the dogs take the bits from under their masters' table.

^{28 Ref} Then Jesus, answering, said to her, O woman, great is your faith: let your desire be done. And her daughter was made well from that hour.

^{29 Ref} And Jesus went from there and came to the sea of Galilee; and he went up into the mountain, and took his seat there.

^{30 Ref} And there came to him great numbers of people having with them those who were broken in body, or blind, or without voice, or wounded, or ill in any way, and a number of others; they put them down at his feet and he made them well:

^{31 Ref} So that the people were full of wonder when they saw that those who had no voice were talking, the feeble were made strong, those whose bodies were broken had the power of walking, and the blind were able to see: and they gave glory to the God of Israel.

^{32 Ref} And Jesus got his disciples together and said, I have pity for the people, because they have now been with me three days and have no food: and I will not send them away without food, or they will have no strength for the journey.

^{33 Ref} And the disciples say to him, How may we get enough bread in a waste place, to give food to such a number of people?

^{34 Ref} And Jesus says to them, How much bread have you? And they said, Seven cakes, and some small fishes.

^{35 Ref} Then he gave an order to the people to be seated on the earth,

^{36 Ref} And he took the seven cakes of bread and the fishes; and having given praise, he gave the broken bread to the disciples, and the disciples gave it to the people.

^{37 Ref} And they all took food, and had enough; and they took up of the broken bits, seven baskets full.

³⁸ And there were four thousand men who took food, together with women and children.

^{39 Ref} And when he had sent the people away, he got into the boat, and came into the country of Magadan.
