Acts 7

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Ref And the chief priest said, `Are then these things so?'

2 Ref and he said, `Men, brethren, and fathers, hearken: The God of the glory did appear to our father Abraham, being in Mesopotamia, before his dwelling in Haran,

3 Ref and He said to him, Go forth out of thy land, and out of thy kindred, and come to a land that I shall shew thee.

4 Ref `Then having come forth out of the land of the Chaldeans, he dwelt in Haran, and from thence, after the death of his father, He did remove him to this land wherein ye now dwell,

5 Ref and He gave him no inheritance in it, not even a footstep, and did promise to give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him -- he having no child.

6 Ref `And God spake thus, That his seed shall be sojourning in a strange land, and they shall cause it to serve, and shall do it evil four hundred years,

7 Ref and the nation whom they shall serve I will judge, said God; and after these things they shall come forth and shall do Me service in this place.

8 Ref `And He gave to him a covenant of circumcision, and so he begat Isaac, and did circumcise him on the eighth day, and Isaac `begat' Jacob, and Jacob -- the twelve patriarchs;

9 Ref and the patriarchs, having been moved with jealousy, sold Joseph to Egypt, and God was with him,

10 Ref and did deliver him out of all his tribulations, and gave him favour and wisdom before Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he did set him -- governor over Egypt and all his house.

11 Ref `And there came a dearth upon all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great tribulation, and our fathers were not finding sustenance,

12 Ref and Jacob having heard that there was corn in Egypt, sent forth our fathers a first time;

13 Ref and at the second time was Joseph made known to his brethren, and Joseph's kindred became manifest to Pharaoh,

14 Ref and Joseph having sent, did call for his father Jacob, and all his kindred -- with seventy and five souls --

15 Ref and Jacob went down to Egypt, and died, himself and our fathers,

16 Ref and they were carried over into Sychem, and were laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a price in money from the sons of Emmor, of Sychem.

17 Ref `And according as the time of the promise was drawing nigh, which God did swear to Abraham, the people increased and multiplied in Egypt,

18 Ref till another king rose, who had not known Joseph;

19 Ref this one, having dealt subtilely with our kindred, did evil to our fathers, causing to expose their babes, that they might not live;

20 Ref in which time Moses was born, and he was fair to God, and he was brought up three months in the house of his father;

21 Ref and he having been exposed, the daughter of Pharaoh took him up, and did rear him to herself for a son;

22 Ref and Moses was taught in all wisdom of the Egyptians, and he was powerful in words and in works.

23 Ref `And when forty years were fulfilled to him, it came upon his heart to look after his brethren, the sons of Israel;

24 Ref and having seen a certain one suffering injustice, he did defend, and did justice to the oppressed, having smitten the Egyptian;

25 Ref and he was supposing his brethren to understand that God through his hand doth give salvation; and they did not understand.

26 Ref `On the succeeding day, also, he shewed himself to them as they are striving, and urged them to peace, saying, Men, brethren are ye, wherefore do ye injustice to one another?

27 Ref and he who is doing injustice to the neighbour, did thrust him away, saying, Who set thee a ruler and a judge over us?

28 to kill me dost thou wish, as thou didst kill yesterday the Egyptian?

29 Ref `And Moses fled at this word, and became a sojourner in the land of Midian, where he begat two sons,

30 Ref and forty years having been fulfilled, there appeared to him in the wilderness of mount Sinai a messenger of the Lord, in a flame of fire of a bush,

31 Ref and Moses having seen did wonder at the sight; and he drawing near to behold, there came a voice of the Lord unto him,

32 Ref I `am' the God of thy fathers; the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob. `And Moses having become terrified, durst not behold,

33 Ref and the Lord said to him, Loose the sandal of thy feet, for the place in which thou hast stood is holy ground;

34 Ref seeing I have seen the affliction of My people that `is' in Egypt, and their groaning I did hear, and came down to deliver them; and now come, I will send thee to Egypt.

35 Ref `This Moses, whom they did refuse, saying, Who did set thee a ruler and a judge? this one God a ruler and a redeemer did send, in the hand of a messenger who appeared to him in the bush;

36 Ref this one did bring them forth, having done wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years;

37 Ref this is the Moses who did say to the sons of Israel: A prophet to you shall the Lord your God raise up out of your brethren, like to me, him shall ye hear.

38 Ref `This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness, with the messenger who is speaking to him in the mount Sinai, and with our fathers who did receive the living oracles to give to us;

39 Ref to whom our fathers did not wish to become obedient, but did thrust away, and turned back in their hearts to Egypt,

40 Ref saying to Aaron, Make to us gods who shall go on before us, for this Moses, who brought us forth out of the land of Egypt, we have not known what hath happened to him.

41 Ref `And they made a calf in those days, and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and were rejoicing in the works of their hands,

42 Ref and God did turn, and did give them up to do service to the host of the heaven, according as it hath been written in the scroll of the prophets: Slain beasts and sacrifices did ye offer to Me forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

43 Ref and ye took up the tabernacle of Moloch, and the star of your god Remphan -- the figures that ye made to bow before them, and I will remove your dwelling beyond Babylon.

44 Ref `The tabernacle of the testimony was among our fathers in the wilderness, according as He did direct, who is speaking to Moses, to make it according to the figure that he had seen;

45 Ref which also our fathers having in succession received, did bring in with Joshua, into the possession of the nations whom God did drive out from the presence of our fathers, till the days of David,

46 Ref who found favour before God, and requested to find a tabernacle for the God of Jacob;

47 Ref and Solomon built Him an house.

48 Ref `But the Most High in sanctuaries made with hands doth not dwell, according as the prophet saith:

49 Ref The heaven `is' My throne, and the earth My footstool; what house will ye build to Me? saith the Lord, or what `is' the place of My rest?

50 Ref hath not My hand made all these things?

51 Ref `Ye stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and in ears! ye do always the Holy Spirit resist; as your fathers -- also ye;

52 Ref which of the prophets did not your fathers persecute? and they killed those who declared before about the coming of the Righteous One, of whom now ye betrayers and murderers have become,

53 Ref who received the law by arrangement of messengers, and did not keep `it'.'

54 Ref And hearing these things, they were cut to the hearts, and did gnash the teeth at him;

55 Ref and being full of the Holy Spirit, having looked stedfastly to the heaven, he saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

56 Ref and he said, `Lo, I see the heavens having been opened, and the Son of Man standing on the right hand of God.'

57 Ref And they, having cried out with a loud voice, stopped their ears, and did rush with one accord upon him,

58 Ref and having cast him forth outside of the city, they were stoning `him' -- and the witnesses did put down their garments at the feet of a young man called Saul --

59 Ref and they were stoning Stephen, calling and saying, `Lord Jesus, receive my spirit;'

60 Ref and having bowed the knees, he cried with a loud voice, `Lord, mayest thou not lay to them this sin;' and this having said, he fell asleep.

World English Bible (WEB)

1 Ref The high priest said, "Are these things so?"

2 Ref He said, "Brothers and fathers, listen. The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham, when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran,

3 Ref and said to him, 'Get out of your land, and from your relatives, and come into a land which I will show you.'

4 Ref Then he came out of the land of the Chaldaeans, and lived in Haran. From there, when his father was dead, God moved him into this land, where you are now living.

5 Ref He gave him no inheritance in it, no, not so much as to set his foot on. He promised that he would give it to him for a possession, and to his seed after him, when he still had no child.

6 Ref God spoke in this way: that his seed would live as aliens in a strange land, and that they would be enslaved and mistreated for four hundred years.

7 Ref 'I will judge the nation to which they will be in bondage,' said God, 'and after that will they come out, and serve me in this place.'

8 Ref He gave him the covenant of circumcision. So Abraham became the father of Isaac, and circumcised him the eighth day. Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob became the father of the twelve patriarchs.

9 Ref "The patriarchs, moved with jealousy against Joseph, sold him into Egypt. God was with him,

10 Ref and delivered him out of all his afflictions, and gave him favor and wisdom before Pharaoh, king of Egypt. He made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

11 Ref Now a famine came over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and great affliction. Our fathers found no food.

12 Ref But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers the first time.

13 Ref On the second time Joseph was made known to his brothers, and Joseph's race was revealed to Pharaoh.

14 Ref Joseph sent, and summoned Jacob, his father, and all his relatives, seventy-five souls.

15 Ref Jacob went down into Egypt, and he died, himself and our fathers,

16 Ref and they were brought back to Shechem, and laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a price in silver from the children of Hamor of Shechem.

17 Ref "But as the time of the promise came close which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt,

18 Ref until there arose a different king, who didn't know Joseph.

19 Ref The same took advantage of our race, and mistreated our fathers, and forced them to throw out their babies, so that they wouldn't stay alive.

20 Ref At that time Moses was born, and was exceedingly handsome. He was nourished three months in his father's house.

21 Ref When he was thrown out, Pharaoh's daughter took him up, and reared him as her own son.

22 Ref Moses was instructed in all the wisdom of the Egyptians. He was mighty in his words and works.

23 Ref But when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers{The word for "brothers" here and where the context allows may be also correctly translated "brothers and sisters" or "siblings."}, the children of Israel.

24 Ref Seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him who was oppressed, striking the Egyptian.

25 Ref He supposed that his brothers understood that God, by his hand, was giving them deliverance; but they didn't understand.

26 Ref "The day following, he appeared to them as they fought, and urged them to be at peace again, saying, 'Sirs, you are brothers. Why do you wrong one another?'

27 Ref But he who did his neighbor wrong pushed him away, saying, 'Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?

28 Do you want to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?'

29 Ref Moses fled at this saying, and became a stranger in the land of Midian, where he became the father of two sons.

30 Ref "When forty years were fulfilled, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in the wilderness of Mount Sinai, in a flame of fire in a bush.

31 Ref When Moses saw it, he wondered at the sight. As he came close to see, a voice of the Lord came to him,

32 Ref 'I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.' Moses trembled, and dared not look.

33 Ref The Lord said to him, 'Take your sandals off of your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.

34 Ref I have surely seen the affliction of my people that is in Egypt, and have heard their groaning. I have come down to deliver them. Now come, I will send you into Egypt.'

35 Ref "This Moses, whom they refused, saying, 'Who made you a ruler and a judge?'--God has sent him as both a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the angel who appeared to him in the bush.

36 Ref This man led them out, having worked wonders and signs in Egypt, in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness for forty years.

37 Ref This is that Moses, who said to the children of Israel, 'The Lord our God will raise up a prophet for you from among your brothers, like me.{TR adds "You shall listen to him."}'

38 Ref This is he who was in the assembly in the wilderness with the angel that spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers, who received living oracles to give to us,

39 Ref to whom our fathers wouldn't be obedient, but rejected him, and turned back in their hearts to Egypt,

40 Ref saying to Aaron, 'Make us gods that will go before us, for as for this Moses, who led us out of the land of Egypt, we don't know what has become of him.'

41 Ref They made a calf in those days, and brought a sacrifice to the idol, and rejoiced in the works of their hands.

42 Ref But God turned, and gave them up to serve the host of the sky, as it is written in the book of the prophets, 'Did you offer to me slain animals and sacrifices Forty years in the wilderness, O house of Israel?

43 Ref You took up the tent of Moloch, The star of your god Rephan, The figures which you made to worship. I will carry you away beyond Babylon.'

44 Ref "Our fathers had the tent of the testimony in the wilderness, even as he who spoke to Moses commanded him to make it according to the pattern that he had seen;

45 Ref which also our fathers, in their turn, brought in with Joshua when they entered into the possession of the nations, whom God drove out before the face of our fathers, to the days of David,

46 Ref who found favor in the sight of God, and asked to find a habitation for the God of Jacob.

47 Ref But Solomon built him a house.

48 Ref However, the Most High doesn't dwell in temples made with hands, as the prophet says,

49 Ref 'heaven is my throne, And the earth a footstool for my feet. What kind of house will you build me?' says the Lord; 'Or what is the place of my rest?

50 Ref Didn't my hand make all these things?'

51 Ref "You stiff-necked and uncircumcised in heart and ears, you always resist the Holy Spirit! As your fathers did, so you do.

52 Ref Which of the prophets didn't your fathers persecute? They killed those who foretold the coming of the Righteous One, of whom you have now become betrayers and murderers.

53 Ref You received the law as it was ordained by angels, and didn't keep it!"

54 Ref Now when they heard these things, they were cut to the heart, and they gnashed at him with their teeth.

55 Ref But he, being full of the Holy Spirit, looked up steadfastly into heaven, and saw the glory of God, and Jesus standing on the right hand of God,

56 Ref and said, "Behold, I see the heavens opened, and the Son of Man standing at the right hand of God!"

57 Ref But they cried out with a loud voice, and stopped their ears, and rushed at him with one accord.

58 Ref They threw him out of the city, and stoned him. The witnesses placed their garments at the feet of a young man named Saul.

59 Ref They stoned Stephen as he called out, saying, "Lord Jesus, receive my Spirit!"

60 Ref He kneeled down, and cried with a loud voice, "Lord, don't hold this sin against them!" When he had said this, he fell asleep.
