Luke 22

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Ref And the feast of the unleavened food was coming nigh, that is called Passover,

2 Ref and the chief priests and the scribes were seeking how they may take him up, for they were afraid of the people.

3 Ref And the Adversary entered into Judas, who is surnamed Iscariot, being of the number of the twelve,

4 Ref and he, having gone away, spake with the chief priests and the magistrates, how he might deliver him up to them,

5 Ref and they rejoiced, and covenanted to give him money,

6 Ref and he agreed, and was seeking a favourable season to deliver him up to them without tumult.

7 Ref And the day of the unleavened food came, in which it was behoving the passover to be sacrificed,

8 Ref and he sent Peter and John, saying, `Having gone on, prepare to us the passover, that we may eat;'

9 and they said to him, `Where wilt thou that we might prepare?'

10 Ref And he said to them, `Lo, in your entering into the city, there shall meet you a man, bearing a pitcher of water, follow him to the house where he doth go in,

11 Ref and ye shall say to the master of the house, The Teacher saith to thee, Where is the guest-chamber where the passover with my disciples I may eat?

12 Ref and he shall show you a large upper room furnished, there make ready;'

13 Ref and they, having gone away, found as he hath said to them, and they made ready the passover.

14 Ref And when the hour come, he reclined (at meat), and the twelve apostles with him,

15 Ref and he said unto them, `With desire I did desire to eat this passover with you before my suffering,

16 Ref for I say to you, that no more may I eat of it till it may be fulfilled in the reign of God.'

17 Ref And having taken a cup, having given thanks, he said, `Take this and divide to yourselves,

18 Ref for I say to you that I may not drink of the produce of the vine till the reign of God may come.'

19 Ref And having taken bread, having given thanks, he brake and gave to them, saying, `This is my body, that for you is being given, this do ye -- to remembrance of me.'

20 Ref In like manner, also, the cup after the supping, saying, `This cup `is' the new covenant in my blood, that for you is being poured forth.

21 Ref `But, lo, the hand of him delivering me up `is' with me on the table,

22 Ref and indeed the Son of Man doth go according to what hath been determined; but wo to that man through whom he is being delivered up.'

23 Ref And they began to reason among themselves, who then of them it may be, who is about to do this thing.

24 Ref And there happened also a strife among them -- who of them is accounted to be greater.

25 Ref And he said to them, `The kings of the nations do exercise lordship over them, and those exercising authority upon them are called benefactors;

26 Ref but ye `are' not so, but he who is greater among you -- let him be as the younger; and he who is leading, as he who is ministering;

27 Ref for who is greater? he who is reclining (at meat), or he who is ministering? is it not he who is reclining (at meat)? and I -- I am in your midst as he who is ministering.

28 Ref `And ye -- ye are those who have remained with me in my temptations,

29 Ref and I appoint to you, as my Father did appoint to me, a kingdom,

30 Ref that ye may eat and may drink at my table, in my kingdom, and may sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel.'

31 Ref And the Lord said, `Simon, Simon, lo, the Adversary did ask you for himself to sift as the wheat,

32 Ref and I besought for thee, that thy faith may not fail; and thou, when thou didst turn, strengthen thy brethren.'

33 Ref And he said to him, `Sir, with thee I am ready both to prison and to death to go;'

34 Ref and he said, `I say to thee, Peter, a cock shall not crow to-day, before thrice thou mayest disown knowing me.'

35 Ref And he said to them, `When I sent you without bag, and scrip, and sandals, did ye lack anything?' and they said, `Nothing.'

36 Then said he to them, `But, now, he who is having a bag, let him take `it' up, and in like manner also a scrip; and he who is not having, let him sell his garment, and buy a sword,

37 Ref for I say to you, that yet this that hath been written it behoveth to be fulfilled in me: And with lawless ones he was reckoned, for also the things concerning me have an end.'

38 Ref And they said, `Sir, lo, here `are' two swords;' and he said to them, `It is sufficient.'

39 Ref And having gone forth, he went on, according to custom, to the mount of the Olives, and his disciples also followed him,

40 Ref and having come to the place, he said to them, `Pray ye not to enter into temptation.'

41 Ref And he was withdrawn from them, as it were a stone's cast, and having fallen on the knees he was praying,

42 Ref saying, `Father, if Thou be counselling to make this cup pass from me --; but, not my will, but Thine be done.' --

43 Ref And there appeared to him a messenger from heaven strengthening him;

44 Ref and having been in agony, he was more earnestly praying, and his sweat became, as it were, great drops of blood falling upon the ground.

45 Ref And having risen up from the prayer, having come unto the disciples, he found them sleeping from the sorrow,

46 Ref and he said to them, `Why do ye sleep? having risen, pray that ye may not enter into temptation.'

47 Ref And while he is speaking, lo, a multitude, and he who is called Judas, one of the twelve, was coming before them, and he came nigh to Jesus to kiss him,

48 Ref and Jesus said to him, `Judas, with a kiss the Son of Man dost thou deliver up?'

49 Ref And those about him, having seen what was about to be, said to him, `Sir, shall we smite with a sword?'

50 Ref And a certain one of them smote the servant of the chief priest, and took off his right ear,

51 Ref and Jesus answering said, `Suffer ye thus far,' and having touched his ear, he healed him.

52 Ref And Jesus said to those having come upon him -- chief priests, and magistrates of the temple, and elders -- `As upon a robber have ye come forth, with swords and sticks?

53 Ref while daily I was with you in the temple, ye did stretch forth no hands against me; but this is your hour and the power of the darkness.'

54 Ref And having taken him, they led and brought him to the house of the chief priest. And Peter was following afar off,

55 Ref and they having kindled a fire in the midst of the court, and having sat down together, Peter was sitting in the midst of them,

56 Ref and a certain maid having seen him sitting at the light, and having earnestly looked at him, she said, `And this one was with him!'

57 Ref and he disowned him, saying, `Woman, I have not known him.'

58 Ref And after a little, another having seen him, said, `And thou art of them!' and Peter said, `Man, I am not.'

59 Ref And one hour, as it were, having intervened, a certain other was confidently affirming, saying, `Of a truth this one also was with him, for he is also a Galilean;'

60 Ref and Peter said, `Man, I have not known what thou sayest;' and presently, while he is speaking, a cock crew.

61 Ref And the Lord having turned did look on Peter, and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he said to him -- `Before a cock shall crow, thou mayest disown me thrice;'

62 Ref and Peter having gone without, wept bitterly.

63 Ref And the men who were holding Jesus were mocking him, beating `him';

64 Ref and having blindfolded him, they were striking him on the face, and were questioning him, saying, `Prophesy who he is who smote thee?'

65 Ref and many other things, speaking evilly, they spake in regard to him.

66 Ref And when it became day there was gathered together the eldership of the people, chief priests also, and scribes, and they led him up to their own sanhedrim,

67 Ref saying, `If thou be the Christ, tell us.' And he said to them, `If I may tell you, ye will not believe;

68 Ref and if I also question `you', ye will not answer me or send me away;

69 Ref henceforth, there shall be the Son of Man sitting on the right hand of the power of God.'

70 Ref And they all said, `Thou, then, art the Son of God?' and he said unto them, `Ye say `it', because I am;'

71 Ref and they said, `What need yet have we of testimony? for we ourselves did hear `it' from his mouth.'

World English Bible (WEB)

1 Ref Now the feast of unleavened bread, which is called the Passover, drew near.

2 Ref The chief priests and the scribes sought how they might put him to death, for they feared the people.

3 Ref Satan entered into Judas, who was surnamed Iscariot, who was numbered with the twelve.

4 Ref He went away, and talked with the chief priests and captains about how he might deliver him to them.

5 Ref They were glad, and agreed to give him money.

6 Ref He consented, and sought an opportunity to deliver him to them in the absence of the multitude.

7 Ref The day of unleavened bread came, on which the Passover must be sacrificed.

8 Ref He sent Peter and John, saying, "Go and prepare the Passover for us, that we may eat."

9 They said to him, "Where do you want us to prepare?"

10 Ref He said to them, "Behold, when you have entered into the city, a man carrying a pitcher of water will meet you. Follow him into the house which he enters.

11 Ref Tell the master of the house, 'The Teacher says to you, "Where is the guest room, where I may eat the Passover with my disciples?"'

12 Ref He will show you a large, furnished upper room. Make preparations there."

13 Ref They went, found things as he had told them, and they prepared the Passover.

14 Ref When the hour had come, he sat down with the twelve apostles.

15 Ref He said to them, "I have earnestly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer,

16 Ref for I tell you, I will no longer by any means eat of it until it is fulfilled in the Kingdom of God."

17 Ref He received a cup, and when he had given thanks, he said, "Take this, and share it among yourselves,

18 Ref for I tell you, I will not drink at all again from the fruit of the vine, until the Kingdom of God comes."

19 Ref He took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and gave to them, saying, "This is my body which is given for you. Do this in memory of me."

20 Ref Likewise, he took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you.

21 Ref But behold, the hand of him who betrays me is with me on the table.

22 Ref The Son of Man indeed goes, as it has been determined, but woe to that man through whom he is betrayed!"

23 Ref They began to question among themselves, which of them it was who would do this thing.

24 Ref There arose also a contention among them, which of them was considered to be greatest.

25 Ref He said to them, "The kings of the Gentiles lord it over them, and those who have authority over them are called 'benefactors.'

26 Ref But not so with you. But one who is the greater among you, let him become as the younger, and one who is governing, as one who serves.

27 Ref For who is greater, one who sits at the table, or one who serves? Isn't it he who sits at the table? But I am in the midst of you as one who serves.

28 Ref But you are those who have continued with me in my trials.

29 Ref I confer on you a kingdom, even as my Father conferred on me,

30 Ref that you may eat and drink at my table in my Kingdom. You will sit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel."

31 Ref The Lord said, "Simon, Simon, behold, Satan asked to have you, that he might sift you as wheat,

32 Ref but I prayed for you, that your faith wouldn't fail. You, when once you have turned again, establish your brothers{The word for "brothers" here may be also correctly translated "brothers and sisters" or "siblings."}."

33 Ref He said to him, "Lord, I am ready to go with you both to prison and to death!"

34 Ref He said, "I tell you, Peter, the rooster will by no means crow today until you deny that you know me three times."

35 Ref He said to them, "When I sent you out without purse, and wallet, and shoes, did you lack anything?" They said, "Nothing."

36 Then he said to them, "But now, whoever has a purse, let him take it, and likewise a wallet. Whoever has none, let him sell his cloak, and buy a sword.

37 Ref For I tell you that this which is written must still be fulfilled in me: 'He was counted with the lawless.' For that which concerns me has an end."

38 Ref They said, "Lord, behold, here are two swords." He said to them, "That is enough."

39 Ref He came out, and went, as his custom was, to the Mount of Olives. His disciples also followed him.

40 Ref When he was at the place, he said to them, "Pray that you don't enter into temptation."

41 Ref He was withdrawn from them about a stone's throw, and he knelt down and prayed,

42 Ref saying, "Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done."

43 Ref An angel from heaven appeared to him, strengthening him.

44 Ref Being in agony he prayed more earnestly. His sweat became like great drops of blood falling down on the ground.

45 Ref When he rose up from his prayer, he came to the disciples, and found them sleeping because of grief,

46 Ref and said to them, "Why do you sleep? Rise and pray that you may not enter into temptation."

47 Ref While he was still speaking, behold, a multitude, and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, was leading them. He came near to Jesus to kiss him.

48 Ref But Jesus said to him, "Judas, do you betray the Son of Man with a kiss?"

49 Ref When those who were around him saw what was about to happen, they said to him, "Lord, shall we strike with the sword?"

50 Ref A certain one of them struck the servant of the high priest, and cut off his right ear.

51 Ref But Jesus answered, "Let me at least do this"--and he touched his ear, and healed him.

52 Ref Jesus said to the chief priests, captains of the temple, and elders, who had come against him, "Have you come out as against a robber, with swords and clubs?

53 Ref When I was with you in the temple daily, you didn't stretch out your hands against me. But this is your hour, and the power of darkness."

54 Ref They seized him, and led him away, and brought him into the high priest's house. But Peter followed from a distance.

55 Ref When they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard, and had sat down together, Peter sat among them.

56 Ref A certain servant girl saw him as he sat in the light, and looking intently at him, said, "This man also was with him."

57 Ref He denied Jesus, saying, "Woman, I don't know him."

58 Ref After a little while someone else saw him, and said, "You also are one of them!" But Peter answered, "Man, I am not!"

59 Ref After about one hour passed, another confidently affirmed, saying, "Truly this man also was with him, for he is a Galilean!"

60 Ref But Peter said, "Man, I don't know what you are talking about!" Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.

61 Ref The Lord turned, and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered the Lord's word, how he said to him, "Before the rooster crows you will deny me three times."

62 Ref He went out, and wept bitterly.

63 Ref The men who held Jesus mocked him and beat him.

64 Ref Having blindfolded him, they struck him on the face and asked him, "Prophesy! Who is the one who struck you?"

65 Ref They spoke many other things against him, insulting him.

66 Ref As soon as it was day, the assembly of the elders of the people was gathered together, both chief priests and scribes, and they led him away into their council, saying,

67 Ref "If you are the Christ, tell us." But he said to them, "If I tell you, you won't believe,

68 Ref and if I ask, you will in no way answer me or let me go.

69 Ref From now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the power of God."

70 Ref They all said, "Are you then the Son of God?" He said to them, "You say it, because I AM."

71 Ref They said, "Why do we need any more witness? For we ourselves have heard from his own mouth!"
