^{1 Ref} And immediately, in the morning, the chief priests having made a consultation, with the elders, and scribes, and the whole sanhedrim, having bound Jesus, did lead away, and delivered `him' to Pilate;

^{2 Ref} and Pilate questioned him, `Art thou the king of the Jews?' and he answering said to him, `Thou dost say `it'.'

^{3 Ref} And the chief priests were accusing him of many things, `but he answered nothing.'

^{4 Ref} And Pilate again questioned him, saying, `Thou dost not answer anything! lo, how many things they do testify against thee!'

^{5 Ref} and Jesus did no more answer anything, so that Pilate wondered.

^{6 Ref} And at every feast he was releasing to them one prisoner, whomsoever they were asking;

^{7 Ref} and there was `one' named Barabbas, bound with those making insurrection with him, who had in the insurrection committed murder.

⁸ And the multitude having cried out, began to ask for themselves as he was always doing to them,

^{9 Ref} and Pilate answered them, saying, `Will ye `that' I shall release to you the king of the Jews?'

^{10 Ref} for he knew that because of envy the chief priests had delivered him up;

^{11 Ref} and the chief priests did move the multitude, that he might rather release Barabbas to them.

^{12 Ref} And Pilate answering, again said to them, `What, then, will ye `that' I shall do to him whom ye call king of the Jews?'

¹³ and they again cried out, `Crucify him.'

^{14 Ref} And Pilate said to them, `Why -- what evil did he?' and they cried out the more vehemently, `Crucify him;'

^{15 Ref} and Pilate, wishing to content the multitude, released to them Barabbas, and delivered up Jesus -- having scourged `him' -- that he might be crucified.

^{16 Ref} And the soldiers led him away into the hall, which is Praetorium, and call together the whole band,

^{17 Ref} and clothe him with purple, and having plaited a crown of thorns, they put `it' on him,

^{18 Ref} and began to salute him, `Hail, King of the Jews.'

^{19 Ref} And they were smiting him on the head with a reed, and were spitting on him, and having bent the knee, were bowing to him,

^{20 Ref} and when they `had' mocked him, they took the purple from off him, and clothed him in his own garments, and they led him forth, that they may crucify him.

^{21 Ref} And they impress a certain one passing by -- Simon, a Cyrenian, coming from the field, the father of Alexander and Rufus -- that he may bear his cross,

^{22 Ref} and they bring him to the place Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, `Place of a skull;'

^{23 Ref} and they were giving him to drink wine mingled with myrrh, and he did not receive.

^{24 Ref} And having crucified him, they were dividing his garments, casting a lot upon them, what each may take;

^{25 Ref} and it was the third hour, and they crucified him;

^{26 Ref} and the inscription of his accusation was written above -- `The King of the Jews.'

^{27 Ref} And with him they crucify two robbers, one on the right hand, and one on his left,

²⁸ and the Writing was fulfilled that is saying, `And with lawless ones he was numbered.'

^{29 Ref} And those passing by were speaking evil of him, shaking their heads, and saying, `Ah, the thrower down of the sanctuary, and in three days the builder!

³⁰ save thyself, and come down from the cross!'

^{31 Ref} And in like manner also the chief priests, mocking with one another, with the scribes, said, `Others he saved; himself he is not able to save.

^{32 Ref} The Christ! the king of Israel -- let him come down now from the cross, that we may see and believe;' and those crucified with him were reproaching him.

^{33 Ref} And the sixth hour having come, darkness came over the whole land till the ninth hour,

^{34 Ref} and at the ninth hour Jesus cried with a great voice, saying, `Eloi, Eloi, lamma sabachthani?' which is, being interpreted, `My God, my God, why didst Thou forsake me?'

^{35 Ref} And certain of those standing by, having heard, said, `Lo, Elijah he doth call;'

^{36 Ref} and one having run, and having filled a spunge with vinegar, having put `it' also on a reed, was giving him to drink, saying, `Let alone, let us see if Elijah doth come to take him down.'

^{37 Ref} And Jesus having uttered a loud cry, yielded the spirit,

^{38 Ref} and the veil of the sanctuary was rent in two, from top to bottom,

^{39 Ref} and the centurion who was standing over-against him, having seen that, having so cried out, he yielded the spirit, said, `Truly this man was Son of God.'

^{40 Ref} And there were also women afar off beholding, among whom was also Mary the Magdalene, and Mary of James the less, and of Joses, and Salome,

^{41 Ref} (who also, when he was in Galilee, were following him, and were ministering to him,) and many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.

^{42 Ref} And now evening having come, seeing it was the preparation, that is, the fore-sabbath,

^{43 Ref} Joseph of Arimathea, an honourable counsellor, who also himself was waiting for the reign of God, came, boldly entered in unto Pilate, and asked the body of Jesus.

^{44 Ref} And Pilate wondered if he were already dead, and having called near the centurion, did question him if he were long dead,

^{45 Ref} and having known `it' from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

^{46 Ref} And he, having brought fine linen, and having taken him down, wrapped him in the linen, and laid him in a sepulchre that had been hewn out of a rock, and he rolled a stone unto the door of the sepulchre,

^{47 Ref} and Mary the Magdalene, and Mary of Joses, were beholding where he is laid.

^{6 Ref} Now at the feast he used to release to them one prisoner, whom they asked of him.

^{7 Ref} There was one called Barabbas, bound with those who had made insurrection, men who in the insurrection had committed murder.

⁸ The multitude, crying aloud, began to ask him to do as he always did for them.

^{9 Ref} Pilate answered them, saying, "Do you want me to release to you the King of the Jews?"

^{10 Ref} For he perceived that for envy the chief priests had delivered him up.

^{11 Ref} But the chief priests stirred up the multitude, that he should release Barabbas to them instead.

^{12 Ref} Pilate again asked them, "What then should I do to him whom you call the King of the Jews?"

¹³ They cried out again, "Crucify him!"

^{14 Ref} Pilate said to them, "Why, what evil has he done?" But they cried out exceedingly, "Crucify him!"

^{15 Ref} Pilate, wishing to please the multitude, released Barabbas to them, and handed over Jesus, when he had flogged him, to be crucified.

^{16 Ref} The soldiers led him away within the court, which is the Praetorium; and they called together the whole cohort.

^{17 Ref} They clothed him with purple, and weaving a crown of thorns, they put it on him.

^{18 Ref} They began to salute him, "Hail, King of the Jews!"

^{19 Ref} They struck his head with a reed, and spat on him, and bowing their knees, did homage to him.

^{20 Ref} When they had mocked him, they took the purple off of him, and put his own garments on him. They led him out to crucify him.

^{21 Ref} They compelled one passing by, coming from the country, Simon of Cyrene, the father of Alexander and Rufus, to go with them, that he might bear his cross.

^{22 Ref} They brought him to the place called Golgotha, which is, being interpreted, "The place of a skull."

^{23 Ref} They offered him wine mixed with myrrh to drink, but he didn't take it.

^{24 Ref} Crucifying him, they parted his garments among them, casting lots on them, what each should take.

^{25 Ref} It was the third hour,{9:00 A. M.} and they crucified him.

^{26 Ref} The superscription of his accusation was written over him, "THE KING OF THE JEWS."

^{27 Ref} With him they crucified two robbers; one on his right hand, and one on his left.

²⁸ The Scripture was fulfilled, which says, "He was numbered with transgressors."

^{29 Ref} Those who passed by blasphemed him, wagging their heads, and saying, "Ha! You who destroy the temple, and build it in three days,

³⁰ save yourself, and come down from the cross!"

^{31 Ref} Likewise, also the chief priests mocking among themselves with the scribes said, "He saved others. He can't save himself.

^{32 Ref} Let the Christ, the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, that we may see and believe him.{TR omits "him"}" Those who were crucified with him insulted him.

^{33 Ref} When the sixth hour{or, noon} had come, there was darkness over the whole land until the ninth hour.{3:00 PM}

^{34 Ref} At the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, "Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?" which is, being interpreted, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

^{35 Ref} Some of those who stood by, when they heard it, said, "Behold, he is calling Elijah."

^{36 Ref} One ran, and filling a sponge full of vinegar, put it on a reed, and gave it to him to drink, saying, "Let him be. Let's see whether Elijah comes to take him down."

^{37 Ref} Jesus cried out with a loud voice, and gave up the spirit.

^{38 Ref} The veil of the temple was torn in two from the top to the bottom.

^{39 Ref} When the centurion, who stood by opposite him, saw that he cried out like this and breathed his last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!"

^{40 Ref} There were also women watching from afar, among whom were both Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James the less and of Joses, and Salome;

^{41 Ref} who, when he was in Galilee, followed him, and served him; and many other women who came up with him to Jerusalem.

^{42 Ref} When evening had now come, because it was the Preparation Day, that is, the day before the Sabbath,

^{43 Ref} Joseph of Arimathaea, a prominent council member who also himself was looking for the Kingdom of God, came. He boldly went in to Pilate, and asked for Jesus' body.

^{44 Ref} Pilate marveled if he were already dead; and summoning the centurion, he asked him whether he had been dead long.

^{45 Ref} When he found out from the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph.

^{46 Ref} He bought a linen cloth, and taking him down, wound him in the linen cloth, and laid him in a tomb which had been cut out of a rock. He rolled a stone against the door of the tomb.

^{47 Ref} Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother of Joses, saw where he was laid.
