1 Peter 4

American Standard-ASV1901 (ASV)

1 Ref Forasmuch then as Christ suffered in the flesh, arm ye yourselves also with the same mind; for he that hath suffered in the flesh hath ceased from sin;

2 Ref that ye no longer should live the rest of your time in flesh to the lusts of men, but to the will of God.

3 Ref For the time past may suffice to have wrought the desire of the Gentiles, and to have walked in lasciviousness, lusts, winebibbings, revellings, carousings, and abominable idolatries:

4 Ref wherein they think strange that ye run not with `them' into the same excess of riot, speaking evil of `of':

5 Ref who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the living and the dead.

6 Ref For unto this end was the gospel preached even to the dead, that they might be judged indeed according to men in the flesh, but live according to God in the spirit.

7 Ref But the end of all things is at hand: be ye therefore of sound mind, and be sober unto prayer:

8 Ref above all things being fervent in your love among yourselves; for love covereth a multitude of sins:

9 Ref using hospitality one to another without murmuring:

10 Ref according as each hath received a gift, ministering it among yourselves, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God;

11 Ref if any man speaketh, `speaking' as it were oracles of God; is any man ministereth, `ministering' as of the strength which God supplieth: that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, whose is the glory and the dominion for ever and ever. Amen.

12 Ref Beloved, think it not strange concerning the fiery trial among you, which cometh upon you to prove you, as though a strange thing happened unto you:

13 Ref but insomuch as ye are partakers of Christ's sufferings, rejoice; that at the revelation of his glory also ye may rejoice with exceeding joy.

14 Ref If ye are reproached for the name of Christ, blessed `are ye'; because the `Spirit' of glory and the Spirit of God resteth upon you.

15 Ref For let none of you suffer as a murderer, or a thief, or an evil-doer, or as a meddler in other men's matters:

16 Ref but if `a man suffer' as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; but let him glorify God in this name.

17 Ref For the time `is come' for judgment to begin at the house of God: and if `it begin' first at us, what `shall be' the end of them that obey not the gospel of God?

18 Ref And if the righteous is scarcely saved, where shall the ungodly and sinner appear?

19 Ref Wherefore let them also that suffer according to the will of God commit their souls in well-doing unto a faithful Creator.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Ref Christ, then, having suffered for us in the flesh, ye also with the same mind arm yourselves, because he who did suffer in the flesh hath done with sin,

2 Ref no more in the desires of men, but in the will of God, to live the rest of the time in the flesh;

3 Ref for sufficient to us `is' the past time of life the will of the nations to have wrought, having walked in lasciviousnesses, desires, excesses of wines, revelings, drinking-bouts, and unlawful idolatries,

4 Ref in which they think it strange -- your not running with them to the same excess of dissoluteness, speaking evil,

5 Ref who shall give an account to Him who is ready to judge living and dead,

6 Ref for for this also to dead men was good news proclaimed, that they may be judged, indeed, according to men in the flesh, and may live according to God in the spirit.

7 Ref And of all things the end hath come nigh; be sober-minded, then, and watch unto the prayers,

8 Ref and, before all things, to one another having the earnest love, because the love shall cover a multitude of sins;

9 Ref hospitable to one another, without murmuring;

10 Ref each, according as he received a gift, to one another ministering it, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God;

11 Ref if any one doth speak -- `as oracles of God;' if any one doth minister -- `as of the ability which God doth supply;' that in all things God may be glorified through Jesus Christ, to whom is the glory and the power -- to the ages of the ages. Amen.

12 Ref Beloved, think it not strange at the fiery suffering among you that is coming to try you, as if a strange thing were happening to you,

13 Ref but, according as ye have fellowship with the sufferings of the Christ, rejoice ye, that also in the revelation of his glory ye may rejoice -- exulting;

14 Ref if ye be reproached in the name of Christ -- happy `are ye', because the Spirit of glory and of God upon you doth rest; in regard, indeed, to them, he is evil-spoken of, and in regard to you, he is glorified;

15 Ref for let none of you suffer as a murderer, or thief, or evil-doer, or as an inspector into other men's matters;

16 Ref and if as a Christian, let him not be ashamed; and let him glorify God in this respect;

17 Ref because it is the time of the beginning of the judgment from the house of God, and if first from us, what the end of those disobedient to the good news of God?

18 Ref And if the righteous man is scarcely saved, the ungodly and sinner -- where shall he appear?

19 Ref so that also those suffering according to the will of god, as to a stedfast Creator, let them commit their own souls in good doing.
