³⁰ For this cause many among you are weak and sickly, and not a few sleep.

¹⁹ As many as I love, I reprove and chasten: be zealous therefore, and repent.

¹⁴ For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also that are fallen asleep in Jesus will God bring with him.

⁵¹ Behold, I tell you a mystery: We all shall not sleep, but we shall all be changed,

³² But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

³⁶ For David, after he had in his own generation served the counsel of God, fell asleep, and was laid unto his fathers, and saw corruption:

² You only have I known of all the families of the earth: therefore I will visit upon you all your iniquities.

³¹ If they break my statutes, And keep not my commandments;

³² Then will I visit their transgression with the rod, And their iniquity with stripes.

³³ But my lovingkindness will I not utterly take from him, Nor suffer my faithfulness to fail.

³⁴ My covenant will I not break, Nor alter the thing that is gone out of my lips.

³⁰ They were not estranged from that which they desired, Their food was yet in their mouths,

³¹ When the anger of God went up against them, And slew of the fattest of them, And smote down the young men of Israel.

¹ O Jehovah, rebuke me not in thy wrath; Neither chasten me in thy hot displeasure.

² For thine arrows stick fast in me, And thy hand presseth me sore.

³ There is no soundness in my flesh because of thine indignation; Neither is there any health in my bones because of my sin.

⁴ For mine iniquities are gone over my head: As a heavy burden they are too heavy for me.

⁵ My wounds are loathsome and corrupt, Because of my foolishness.

⁶ I am pained and bowed down greatly; I go mourning all the day long.

⁷ For my loins are filled with burning; And there is no soundness in my flesh.

⁸ I am faint and sore bruised: I have groaned by reason of the disquietness of my heart.

²¹ and he cried unto the man of God that came from Judah, saying, Thus saith Jehovah, Forasmuch as thou hast been disobedient unto the mouth of Jehovah, and hast not kept the commandment which Jehovah thy God commanded thee,

²² but camest back, and hast eaten bread and drunk water in the place of which he said to thee, Eat no bread, and drink no water; thy body shall not come unto the sepulchre of thy fathers.

²³ And it came to pass, after he had eaten bread, and after he had drunk, that he saddled for him the ass, `to wit', for the prophet whom he had brought back.

²⁴ And when he was gone, a lion met him by the way, and slew him: and his body was cast in the way, and the ass stood by it; the lion also stood by the body.

¹⁴ Howbeit, because by this deed thou hast given great occasion to the enemies of Jehovah to blaspheme, the child also that is born unto thee shall surely die.

¹⁵ And Nathan departed unto his house. And Jehovah struck the child that Uriah's wife bare unto David, and it was very sick.

¹⁶ David therefore besought God for the child; and David fasted, and went in, and lay all night upon the earth.

¹⁷ And the elders of his house arose, `and stood' beside him, to raise him up from the earth: but he would not, neither did he eat bread with them.

¹⁸ And it came to pass on the seventh day, that the child died. And the servants of David feared to tell him that the child was dead; for they said, Behold, while the child was yet alive, we spake unto him, and he hearkened not unto our voice: how will he then vex himself, if we tell him that the child is dead!

⁶ And Jehovah sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people; and much people of Israel died.

⁷ And the people came to Moses, and said, We have sinned, because we have spoken against Jehovah, and against thee; pray unto Jehovah, that he take away the serpents from us. And Moses prayed for the people.

⁸ And Jehovah said unto Moses, Make thee a fiery serpent, and set it upon a standard: and it shall come to pass, that every one that is bitten, when he seeth it, shall live.

⁹ And Moses made a serpent of brass, and set it upon the standard: and it came to pass, that if a serpent had bitten any man, when he looked unto the serpent of brass, he lived.

²⁴ Aaron shall be gathered unto his people; for he shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel, because ye rebelled against my word at the waters of Meribah.

¹² And Jehovah said unto Moses and Aaron, Because ye believed not in me, to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, therefore ye shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given them.

²⁶ and he said, If thou wilt diligently hearken to the voice of Jehovah thy God, and wilt do that which is right in his eyes, and wilt give ear to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases upon thee, which I have put upon the Egyptians: for I am Jehovah that healeth thee.

⁵ and ye have forgotten the exhortation which reasoneth with you as with sons, My son, regard not lightly the chastening of the Lord, Nor faint when thou art reproved of him;

⁶ For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth, And scourgeth every son whom he receiveth.

⁷ It is for chastening that ye endure; God dealeth with you as with sons; for what son is there whom `his' father chasteneth not?

⁸ But if ye are without chastening, whereof all have been made partakers, then are ye bastards, and not sons.

⁹ Furthermore, we had the fathers of our flesh to chasten us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live?

¹⁰ For they indeed for a few days chastened `us' as seemed good to them; but he for `our' profit, that `we' may be partakers of his holiness.

¹¹ All chastening seemeth for the present to be not joyous but grievous; yet afterward it yieldeth peaceable fruit unto them that have been exercised thereby, `even the fruit' of righteousness.
