¹⁹ The image, a workman hath cast `it', and the goldsmith overlayeth it with gold, and casteth `for it' silver chains.

¹⁸ What profiteth the graven image, that the maker thereof hath graven it; the molten image, even the teacher of lies, that he that fashioneth its form trusteth therein, to make dumb idols?

¹⁹ Woe unto him that saith to the wood, Awake; to the dumb stone, Arise! Shall this teach? Behold, it is overlaid with gold and silver, and there is no breath at all in the midst of it.

⁹ There is silver beaten into plates, which is brought from Tarshish, and gold from Uphaz, the work of the artificer and of the hands of the goldsmith; blue and purple for their clothing; they are all the work of skilful men.

⁴ Their idols are silver and gold, The work of men's hands.

⁵ They have mouths, but they speak not; Eyes have they, but they see not;

⁶ They have ears, but they hear not; Noses have they, but they smell not;

⁷ They have hands, but they handle not; Feet have they, but they walk not; Neither speak they through their throat.

⁸ They that make them shall be like unto them; Yea, every one that trusteth in them.

⁶ For from Israel is even this; the workman made it, and it is no God; yea, the calf of Samaria shall be broken in pieces.

³ For the customs of the peoples are vanity; for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman with the axe.

⁴ They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not.

⁵ They are like a palm-tree, of turned work, and speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither is it in them to do good.

⁶ Such as lavish gold out of the bag, and weigh silver in the balance, they hire a goldsmith, and he maketh it a god; they fall down, yea, they worship.

⁷ They bear it upon the shoulder, they carry it, and set it in its place, and it standeth, from its place shall it not remove: yea, one may cry unto it, yet can it not answer, nor save him out of his trouble.

¹⁰ Who hath fashioned a god, or molten an image that is profitable for nothing?

¹¹ Behold, all his fellows shall be put to shame; and the workmen, they are of men: let them all be gathered together, let them stand up; they shall fear, they shall be put to shame together.

¹² The smith `maketh' an axe, and worketh in the coals, and fashioneth it with hammers, and worketh it with his strong arm: yea, he is hungry, and his strength faileth; he drinketh no water, and is faint.

¹⁸ Of a truth, Jehovah, the kings of Assyria have laid waste all the countries, and their land,

¹⁹ and have cast their gods into the fire: for they were no gods, but the work of men's hands, wood and stone; therefore they have destroyed them.

²⁰ In that day men shall cast away their idols of silver, and their idols of gold, which have been made for them to worship, to the moles and to the bats;

¹⁸ They that make them shall be like unto them; Yea, every one that trusteth in them.

¹⁵ The idols of the nations are silver and gold, The work of men's hands.

⁴ And when he restored the money unto his mother, his mother took two hundred `pieces' of silver, and gave them to the founder, who made thereof a graven image and a molten image: and it was in the house of Micah.

² And Aaron said unto them, Break off the golden rings, which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring them unto me.

³ And all the people brake off the golden rings which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron.

⁴ And he received it at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, and made it a molten calf: and they said, These are thy gods, O Israel, which brought thee up out of the land of Egypt.

⁶ They help every one his neighbor; and `every one' saith to his brother, Be of good courage.

⁷ So the carpenter encourageth the goldsmith, `and' he that smootheth with the hammer him that smiteth the anvil, saying of the soldering, It is good; and he fasteneth it with nails, that is should not be moved.
