¹ I am the man that hath seen affliction by the rod of his wrath.

⁷ Thy wrath lieth hard upon me, And thou hast afflicted me with all thy waves. Selah

²¹ Have pity upon me, have pity upon me, O ye my friends; For the hand of God hath touched me.

¹⁵ I am afflicted and ready to die from my youth up: While I suffer thy terrors I am distracted.

¹⁶ Thy fierce wrath is gone over me; Thy terrors have cut me off.

²⁰ Thou, who hast showed us many and sore troubles, Wilt quicken us again, And wilt bring us up again from the depths of the earth.

³ He was despised, and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and as one from whom men hide their face he was despised; and we esteemed him not.

¹⁷ I sat not in the assembly of them that make merry, nor rejoiced; I sat alone because of thy hand; for thou hast filled me with indignation.

¹⁸ Why is my pain perpetual, and my wound incurable, which refuseth to be healed? wilt thou indeed be unto me as a deceitful `brook', as waters that fail?

¹⁴ Cursed be the day wherein I was born: let not the day wherein my mother bare me be blessed.

¹⁵ Cursed be the man who brought tidings to my father, saying, A man-child is born unto thee; making him very glad.

¹⁶ And let that man be as the cities which Jehovah overthrew, and repented not: and let him hear a cry in the morning, and shouting at noontime;

¹⁷ because he slew me not from the womb; and so my mother would have been my grave, and her womb always great.

¹⁸ Wherefore came I forth out of the womb to see labor and sorrow, that my days should be consumed with shame?

⁶ Then took they Jeremiah, and cast him into the dungeon of Malchijah the king's son, that was in the court of the guard: and they let down Jeremiah with cords. And in the dungeon there was no water, but mire; and Jeremiah sank in the mire.

¹² Is it nothing to you, all ye that pass by? Behold, and see if there be any sorrow like unto my sorrow, which is brought upon me, Wherewith Jehovah hath afflicted `me' in the day of his fierce anger.

¹³ From on high hath he sent fire into my bones, and it prevaileth against them; He hath spread a net for my feet, he hath turned me back: He hath made me desolate and faint all the day.

¹⁴ The yoke of my transgressions is bound by his hand; They are knit together, they are come up upon my neck; he hath made my strength to fail: The Lord hath delivered me into their hands, against whom I am not able to stand.
