¹⁴ From men by thy hand, O Jehovah, From men of the world, whose portion is in `this' life, And whose belly thou fillest with thy treasure: They are satisfied with children, And leave the rest of their substance to their babes.

²⁵ But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and Lazarus in like manner evil things: but now here he is comforted and thou art in anguish.

⁸ And his lord commended the unrighteous steward because he had done wisely: for the sons of this world are for their own generation wiser than the sons of the light.

¹⁸ Yet he filled their houses with good things: But the counsel of the wicked is far from me.

¹⁴ If his children be multiplied, it is for the sword; And his offspring shall not be satisfied with bread.

¹⁵ Those that remain of him shall be buried in death, And his widows shall make no lamentation.

¹⁶ Though he heap up silver as the dust, And prepare raiment as the clay;

¹⁷ He may prepare it, but the just shall put it on, And the innocent shall divide the silver.

¹⁷ For when he dieth he shall carry nothing away; His glory shall not descend after him.

¹⁸ Though while he lived he blessed his soul (And men praise thee, when thou doest well to thyself,)

¹⁹ He shall go to the generation of his fathers; They shall never see the light.

¹⁹ And I will say to my soul, Soul, thou hast much goods laid up for many years; take thine ease, eat, drink, be merry.

²⁰ But God said unto him, Thou foolish one, this night is thy soul required of thee; and the things which thou hast prepared, whose shall they be?

²¹ So is he that layeth up treasure for himself, and is not rich toward God.

²³ And he said unto them, Ye are from beneath; I am from above: ye are of this world; I am not of this world.

¹⁹ If ye were of the world, the world would love its own: but because ye are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hateth you.

¹⁴ I have given them thy word; and the world hated them, because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

⁴ Ye are of God, `my' little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you than he that is in the world.

⁵ They are of the world: therefore speak they `as' of the world, and the world heareth them.

⁵ Ye have lived delicately on the earth, and taken your pleasure; ye have nourished your hearts in a day of slaughter.

²⁷ And he said, I pray thee therefore, father, that thou wouldest send him to my father's house;

²⁸ for I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

⁹ Who knoweth not in all these, That the hand of Jehovah hath wrought this,

⁷ Wherefore do the wicked live, Become old, yea, wax mighty in power?

⁸ Their seed is established with them in their sight, And their offspring before their eyes.

⁹ Their houses are safe from fear, Neither is the rod of God upon them.

¹⁰ Their bull gendereth, and faileth not; Their cow calveth, and casteth not her calf.

¹¹ They send forth their little ones like a flock, And their children dance.

¹² They sing to the timbrel and harp, And rejoice at the sound of the pipe.

¹³ They spend their days in prosperity, And in a moment they go down to Sheol.

¹⁴ And they say unto God, Depart from us; For we desire not the knowledge of thy ways.

¹⁵ What is the Almighty, that we should serve him? And what profit should we have, if we pray unto him?

²¹ For what careth he for his house after him, When the number of his months is cut off?

⁶ Surely every man walketh in a vain show; Surely they are disquieted in vain: He heapeth up `riches', and knoweth not who shall gather them.

³ For I was envious at the arrogant, When I saw the prosperity of the wicked.

⁴ For there are no pangs in their death; But their strength is firm.

⁵ They are not in trouble as `other' men; Neither are they plagued like `other' men.

⁶ Therefore pride is as a chain about their neck; Violence covereth them as a garment.

⁷ Their eyes stand out with fatness: They have more than heart could wish.

¹² Behold, these are the wicked; And, being alway at ease, they increase in riches.

⁴ If thou seek her as silver, And search for her as for hid treasures:

⁴⁴ The kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in the field; which a man found, and hid; and in his joy he goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.

⁶ The tents of robbers prosper, And they that provoke God are secure; Into whose hand God bringeth `abundantly'.
