¹³ But as for me, when they were sick, my clothing was sackcloth: I afflicted my soul with fasting; And my prayer returned into mine own bosom.

²⁵ Did not I weep for him that was in trouble? Was not my soul grieved for the needy?

¹³ And if the house be worthy, let your peace come upon it: but if it be not worthy, let your peace return to you.

¹⁰ When I wept, `and chastened' my soul with fasting, That was to my reproach.

¹¹ When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword unto them.

⁶ And if a son of peace be there, your peace shall rest upon him: but if not, it shall turn to you again.

¹⁴ Bless them that persecute you; bless, and curse not.

¹⁵ Rejoice with them that rejoice; weep with them that weep.

¹⁴ Then come to him the disciples of John, saying, Why do we and the Pharisees fast oft, but thy disciples fast not?

¹⁵ And Jesus said unto them, Can the sons of the bridechamber mourn, as long as the bridegroom is with them? but the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then will they fast.

⁴⁴ but I say unto you, love your enemies, and pray for them that persecute you;

⁵ Is such the fast that I have chosen? the day for a man to afflict his soul? Is it to bow down his head as a rush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to Jehovah?

³ Wherefore have we fasted, `say they', and thou seest not? `wherefore' have we afflicted our soul, and thou takest no knowledge? Behold, in the day of your fast ye find `your own' pleasure, and exact all your labors.

²⁷ And it came to pass, when Ahab heard those words, that he rent his clothes, and put sackcloth upon his flesh, and fasted, and lay in sackcloth, and went softly.

²⁸ And the word of Jehovah came to Elijah the Tishbite, saying,

²⁹ Seest thou how Ahab humbleth himself before me? because he humbleth himself before me, I will not bring the evil in his days; but in his son's days will I bring the evil upon his house.

³¹ It is a sabbath of solemn rest unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls; it is a statute for ever.

²⁹ And it shall be a statute for ever unto you: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and shall do no manner of work, the home-born, or the stranger that sojourneth among you:
