^{1 Ref} But on the first day of the week, at dawn, they came to the place where his body had been put, taking the spices which they had got ready.

^{2 Ref} And they saw that the stone had been rolled away.

^{3 Ref} And they went in, but the body of the Lord Jesus was not there.

^{4 Ref} And while they were in doubt about it, they saw two men in shining clothing by them:

^{5 Ref} And while their faces were bent down to the earth in fear, these said to them, Why are you looking for the living among the dead?

^{6 Ref} He is not here, he has come back to life: have in mind what he said to you when he was still in Galilee, saying,

^{7 Ref} The Son of man will be given up into the hands of evil-doers, and be put to death on the cross, and on the third day he will come back to life.

^{8 Ref} And his words came back into their minds,

^{9 Ref} And they went away from that place and gave an account of all these things to the eleven disciples and all the others.

^{10 Ref} Now they were Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary, the mother of James: and the other women with them said these things to the Apostles.

^{11 Ref} But these words seemed foolish to them, and they had no belief in them.

^{12 Ref} But Peter got up and went to the place where the body had been put, and looking in he saw nothing but the linen cloths, and he went to his house full of wonder at what had taken place.

^{13 Ref} And then, two of them, on that very day, were going to a little town named Emmaus, which was about seven miles from Jerusalem.

^{14 Ref} And they were talking together about all those things which had taken place.

^{15 Ref} And while they were talking and questioning together, Jesus himself came near and went with them.

^{16 Ref} But their eyes were not open that they might have knowledge of him.

^{17 Ref} And he said to them, What are you talking about together while you go?

^{18 Ref} Then stopping, and looking sadly at him, one of them, named Cleopas, said to him, Are you the only man living in Jerusalem who has not had news of the things which have taken place there at this time?

^{19 Ref} And he said to them, What things? And they said, The things to do with Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet, great in his acts and his words, before God and all the people:

^{20 Ref} And how the chief priests and our rulers gave him up to be put to death on the cross.

^{21 Ref} But we were hoping that he would be the Saviour of Israel. In addition to all this he has now let three days go by from the time when these things took place;

^{22 Ref} And certain women among us gave us cause for wonder, for they went early to the place where his body had been put,

²³ And it was not there; then they came saying that they had seen a vision of angels who said that he was living.

^{24 Ref} And some of those who were with us went to the place, and saw that it was as the women had said, but him they did not see.

^{25 Ref} And he said, O foolish men! how slow you are to give belief to what the prophets have said.

^{26 Ref} Was it not necessary for the Christ to go through these things, and to come into his glory?

^{27 Ref} And he made clear to them all the things in the Writings, from Moses and from all the prophets, which had to do with himself.

^{28 Ref} And they came near the town to which they were going, and he seemed as if he was going on;

^{29 Ref} But they kept him back, saying, Do not go, for evening is near, the day is almost gone. And he went in with them.

^{30 Ref} And when he was seated with them at table, he took the bread, and said words of blessing and, making division of it, he gave it to them.

^{31 Ref} And then their eyes were open, and they had knowledge of him, but he went from their view.

^{32 Ref} And they said to one another, Were not our hearts burning in us while he was talking to us on the way, making clear to us the holy Writings?

^{33 Ref} And that very hour they got up and went back to Jerusalem, where the eleven and the others had come together.

^{34 Ref} And they said to them, The Lord has truly come back to life again, and Simon has seen him.

^{35 Ref} And they gave an account of the things which had taken place on the way, and how, when he gave them bread, they had knowledge of him.

^{36 Ref} And while they were saying these things, he himself was among them, and said to them, Peace be with you!

^{37 Ref} But they were full of fear, being of the opinion that they were seeing a spirit.

^{38 Ref} And he said to them, Why are you troubled, and why are your hearts full of doubt?

^{39 Ref} See; my hands and my feet: it is I myself; put your hands on me and make certain; for a spirit has not flesh and bones as you see that I have.

⁴⁰ And when he had said this, he let them see his hands and his feet.

^{41 Ref} And because, for joy and wonder, they were still in doubt, he said to them, Have you any food here?

⁴² And they gave him a bit of cooked fish.

^{43 Ref} And before their eyes he took a meal.

^{44 Ref} And he said to them, These are the words which I said to you when I was still with you, how it was necessary for all the things which are in the writings of Moses and the prophets and in the Psalms about me, to be put into effect.

^{45 Ref} Then he made the holy Writings clear to their minds.

^{46 Ref} And he said to them, So it is in the Writings that the Christ would undergo death, and come back to life again on the third day;

^{47 Ref} And that teaching about a change of heart and forgiveness of sins is to be given to Jerusalem first and to all nations in his name.

^{48 Ref} You are witnesses of these things.

^{49 Ref} And now I will send to you what my father has undertaken to give you, but do not go from the town, till the power from heaven comes to you.

^{50 Ref} And he took them out till they were near Bethany, and lifting up his hands, he gave them a blessing.

^{51 Ref} And while he was doing so, he went from them and was taken up into heaven.

^{52 Ref} And they gave him worship and went back to Jerusalem with great joy.

^{53 Ref} And they were in the Temple at all times, giving praise to God.

^{5 Ref} and as they were affrighted and bowed down their faces to the earth, they said unto them, Why seek ye the living among the dead?

^{6 Ref} He is not here, but is risen: remember how he spake unto you when he was yet in Galilee,

^{7 Ref} saying that the Son of man must be delivered up into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.

^{8 Ref} And they remembered his words,

^{9 Ref} and returned from the tomb, and told all these things to the eleven, and to all the rest.

^{10 Ref} Now they were Mary Magdalene, and Joanna, and Mary the `mother' of James: and the other women with them told these things unto the apostles.

^{11 Ref} And these words appeared in their sight as idle talk; and they disbelieved them.

^{12 Ref} But Peter arose, and ran unto the tomb; and stooping and looking in, he seeth the linen cloths by themselves; and he departed to his home, wondering at that which was come to pass.

^{13 Ref} And behold, two of them were going that very day to a village named Emmaus, which was threescore furlongs from Jerusalem.

^{14 Ref} And they communed with each other of all these things which had happened.

^{15 Ref} And it came to pass, while they communed and questioned together, that Jesus himself drew near, and went with them.

^{16 Ref} But their eyes were holden that they should not know him.

^{17 Ref} And he said unto them, What communications are these that ye have one with another, as ye walk? And they stood still, looking sad.

^{18 Ref} And one of them, named Cleopas, answering said unto him, Dost thou alone sojourn in Jerusalem and not know the things which are come to pass there in these days?

^{19 Ref} And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, The things concerning Jesus the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people:

^{20 Ref} and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him.

^{21 Ref} But we hoped that it was he who should redeem Israel. Yea and besides all this, it is now the third day since these things came to pass.

^{22 Ref} Moreover certain women of our company amazed us, having been early at the tomb;

²³ and when they found not his body, they came, saying, that they had also seen a vision of angels, who said that he was alive.

^{24 Ref} And certain of them that were with us went to the tomb, and found it even so as the women had said: but him they saw not.

^{25 Ref} And he said unto them, O foolish men, and slow of heart to believe in all that the prophets have spoken!

^{26 Ref} Behooved it not the Christ to suffer these things, and to enter into his glory?

^{27 Ref} And beginning from Moses and from all the prophets, he interpreted to them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself.

^{28 Ref} And they drew nigh unto the village, whither they were going: and he made as though he would go further.

^{29 Ref} And they constrained him, saying, Abide with us; for it is toward evening, and the day is now far spent. And he went in to abide with them.

^{30 Ref} And it came to pass, when he had sat down with them to meat, he took the bread and blessed; and breaking `it' he gave to them.

^{31 Ref} And their eyes were opened, and they knew him; and he vanished out of their sight.

^{32 Ref} And they said one to another, Was not our heart burning within us, while he spake to us in the way, while he opened to us the scriptures?

^{33 Ref} And they rose up that very hour, and returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and them that were with them,

^{34 Ref} saying, The Lord is risen indeed, and hath appeared to Simon.

^{35 Ref} And they rehearsed the things `that happened' in the way, and how he was known of them in the breaking of the bread.

^{36 Ref} And as they spake these things, he himself stood in the midst of them, and saith unto them, Peace `be' unto you.

^{37 Ref} But they were terrified and affrighted, and supposed that they beheld a spirit.

^{38 Ref} And he said unto them, Why are ye troubled? and wherefore do questionings arise in your heart?

^{39 Ref} See my hands and my feet, that it is I myself: handle me, and see; for a spirit hath not flesh and bones, as ye behold me having.

⁴⁰ And when he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.

^{41 Ref} And while they still disbelieved for joy, and wondered, he said unto them, Have ye here anything to eat?

⁴² And they gave him a piece of a broiled fish.

^{43 Ref} And he took it, and ate before them.

^{44 Ref} And he said unto them, These are my words which I spake unto you, while I was yet with you, that all things must needs be fulfilled, which are written in the law of Moses, and the prophets, and the psalms, concerning me.

^{45 Ref} Then opened he their mind, that they might understand the scriptures;

^{46 Ref} and he said unto them, Thus it is written, that the Christ should suffer, and rise again from the dead the third day;

^{47 Ref} and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name unto all the nations, beginning from Jerusalem.

^{48 Ref} Ye are witnesses of these things.

^{49 Ref} And behold, I send forth the promise of my Father upon you: but tarry ye in the city, until ye be clothed with power from on high.

^{50 Ref} And he led them out until `they were' over against Bethany: and he lifted up his hands, and blessed them.

^{51 Ref} And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he parted from them, and was carried up into heaven.

^{52 Ref} And they worshipped him, and returned to Jerusalem with great joy:

^{53 Ref} and were continually in the temple, blessing God.

^{14 Ref} They talked with each other about all of these things which had happened.

^{15 Ref} It happened, while they talked and questioned together, that Jesus himself came near, and went with them.

^{16 Ref} But their eyes were kept from recognizing him.

^{17 Ref} He said to them, "What are you talking about as you walk, and are sad?"

^{18 Ref} One of them, named Cleopas, answered him, "Are you the only stranger in Jerusalem who doesn't know the things which have happened there in these days?"

^{19 Ref} He said to them, "What things?" They said to him, "The things concerning Jesus, the Nazarene, who was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people;

^{20 Ref} and how the chief priests and our rulers delivered him up to be condemned to death, and crucified him.

^{28 Ref} They drew near to the village, where they were going, and he acted like he would go further.

^{29 Ref} They urged him, saying, "Stay with us, for it is almost evening, and the day is almost over." He went in to stay with them.

^{30 Ref} It happened, that when he had sat down at the table with them, he took the bread and gave thanks. Breaking it, he gave to them.

^{31 Ref} Their eyes were opened, and they recognized him, and he vanished out of their sight.

^{32 Ref} They said one to another, "Weren't our hearts burning within us, while he spoke to us along the way, and while he opened the Scriptures to us?"

^{33 Ref} They rose up that very hour, returned to Jerusalem, and found the eleven gathered together, and those who were with them,

^{34 Ref} saying, "The Lord is risen indeed, and has appeared to Simon!"

^{35 Ref} They related the things that happened along the way, and how he was recognized by them in the breaking of the bread.

^{36 Ref} As they said these things, Jesus himself stood among them, and said to them, "Peace be to you."

^{37 Ref} But they were terrified and filled with fear, and supposed that they had seen a spirit.

^{38 Ref} He said to them, "Why are you troubled? Why do doubts arise in your hearts?

^{39 Ref} See my hands and my feet, that it is truly me. Touch me and see, for a spirit doesn't have flesh and bones, as you see that I have."

⁴⁰ When he had said this, he showed them his hands and his feet.

^{41 Ref} While they still didn't believe for joy, and wondered, he said to them, "Do you have anything here to eat?"

⁴² They gave him a piece of a broiled fish and some honeycomb.

^{43 Ref} He took them, and ate in front of them.

^{44 Ref} He said to them, "This is what I told you, while I was still with you, that all things which are written in the law of Moses, the prophets, and the psalms, concerning me must be fulfilled."

^{45 Ref} Then he opened their minds, that they might understand the Scriptures.

^{46 Ref} He said to them, "Thus it is written, and thus it was necessary for the Christ to suffer and to rise from the dead the third day,

^{47 Ref} and that repentance and remission of sins should be preached in his name to all the nations, beginning at Jerusalem.

^{48 Ref} You are witnesses of these things.

^{53 Ref} and were continually in the temple, praising and blessing God. Amen.
