^{1 Ref} Now Sarai, Abram's wife, had given him no children; and she had a servant, a woman of Egypt whose name was Hagar.

^{2 Ref} And Sarai said to Abram, See, the Lord has not let me have children; go in to my servant, for I may get a family through her. And Abram did as Sarai said.

^{3 Ref} So after Abram had been living for ten years in the land of Canaan, Sarai took Hagar, her Egyptian servant, and gave her to Abram for his wife.

^{4 Ref} And he went in to Hagar and she became with child, and when she saw that she was with child, she no longer had any respect for her master's wife.

^{5 Ref} And Sarai said to Abram, May my wrong be on you: I gave you my servant for your wife and when she saw that she was with child, she no longer had any respect for me: may the Lord be judge between you and me.

^{6 Ref} And Abram said, The woman is in your power; do with her whatever seems good to you. And Sarai was cruel to her, so that she went running away from her.

^{7 Ref} And an angel of the Lord came to her by a fountain of water in the waste land, by the fountain on the way to Shur.

^{8 Ref} And he said, Hagar, Sarai's servant, where have you come from and where are you going? And she said, I am running away from Sarai, my master's wife.

^{9 Ref} And the angel said to her, Go back, and put yourself under her authority.

^{10 Ref} And the angel of the Lord said, Your seed will be greatly increased so that it may not be numbered.

^{11 Ref} And the angel of the Lord said, See, you are with child and will give birth to a son, to whom you will give the name Ishmael, because the ears of the Lord were open to your sorrow.

^{12 Ref} And he will be like a mountain ass among men; his hand will be against every man and every man's hand against him, and he will keep his place against all his brothers.

^{13 Ref} And to the Lord who was talking with her she gave this name, You are a God who is seen; for she said, Have I not even here in the waste land had a vision of God and am still living?

^{14 Ref} So that fountain was named, Fountain of Life and Vision: it is between Kadesh and Bered.

^{15 Ref} And Hagar gave birth to a child, the son of Abram, to whom Abram gave the name of Ishmael.

¹⁶ Abram was eighty-six years old when Hagar gave birth to Ishmael.

^{1 Ref} Now Sarai, Abram's wife, bare him no children: and she had a handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar.

^{2 Ref} And Sarai said unto Abram, Behold now, Jehovah hath restrained me from bearing; go in, I pray thee, unto my handmaid; it may be that I shall obtain children by her. And Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.

^{3 Ref} And Sarai, Abram's wife, took Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife.

^{4 Ref} And he went in unto Hagar, and she conceived: and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was despised in her eyes.

^{5 Ref} And Sarai said unto Abram, My wrong be upon thee: I gave my handmaid into they bosom; and when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: Jehovah judge between me and thee.

^{6 Ref} But Abram said unto Sarai, Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her that which is good in thine eyes. And Sarai dealt hardly with her, and she fled from her face.

^{7 Ref} And the angel of Jehovah found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to Shur.

^{8 Ref} And he said, Hagar, Sarai's handmaid, whence camest thou? and whither goest thou? And she said, I am fleeing from the face of my mistress Sarai.

^{9 Ref} And the angel of Jehovah said unto her, Return to thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.

^{10 Ref} And the angel of Jehovah said unto her, I will greatly multiply thy seed, that it shall not be numbered for multitude.

^{11 Ref} And the angel of Jehovah said unto her, Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son; and thou shalt call his name Ishmael, because Jehovah hath heard thy affliction.

^{12 Ref} And he shall be `as' a wild ass among men; his hand `shall be' against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell over against all his brethren.

^{13 Ref} And she called the name of Jehovah that spake unto her, Thou art a God that seeth: for she said, Have I even here looked after him that seeth me?

^{14 Ref} Wherefore the well was called Beer-lahai-roi; behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.

^{15 Ref} And Hagar bare Abram a son: and Abram called the name of his son, whom Hagar bare, Ishmael.

¹⁶ And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bare Ishmael to Abram.

^{1 Ref} And Sarai, Abram's wife, hath not borne to him, and she hath an handmaid, an Egyptian, and her name `is' Hagar;

^{2 Ref} and Sarai saith unto Abram, `Lo, I pray thee, Jehovah hath restrained me from bearing, go in, I pray thee, unto my handmaid; perhaps I am built up from her;' and Abram hearkeneth to the voice of Sarai.

^{3 Ref} And Sarai, Abram's wife, taketh Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, at the end of the tenth year of Abram's dwelling in the land of Canaan, and giveth her to Abram her husband, to him for a wife,

^{4 Ref} and he goeth in unto Hagar, and she conceiveth, and she seeth that she hath conceived, and her mistress is lightly esteemed in her eyes.

^{5 Ref} And Sarai saith unto Abram, `My violence `is' for thee; I -- I have given mine handmaid into thy bosom, and she seeth that she hath conceived, and I am lightly esteemed in her eyes; Jehovah doth judge between me and thee.'

^{6 Ref} And Abram saith unto Sarai, `Lo, thine handmaid `is' in thine hand, do to her that which is good in thine eyes;' and Sarai afflicted her, and she fleeth from her presence.

^{7 Ref} And a messenger of Jehovah findeth her by the fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way `to' Shur,

^{8 Ref} and he saith, `Hagar, Sarai's handmaid, whence hast thou come, and whither dost thou go?' and she saith, `From the presence of Sarai, my mistress, I am fleeing.'

^{9 Ref} And the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, `Turn back unto thy mistress, and humble thyself under her hands;'

^{10 Ref} and the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, `Multiplying I multiply thy seed, and it is not numbered from multitude;'

^{11 Ref} and the messenger of Jehovah saith to her, `Behold thou `art' conceiving, and bearing a son, and hast called his name Ishmael, for Jehovah hath hearkened unto thine affliction;

^{12 Ref} and he is a wild-ass man, his hand against every one, and every one's hand against him -- and before the face of all his brethren he dwelleth.'

^{13 Ref} And she calleth the name of Jehovah who is speaking unto her, `Thou `art', O God, my beholder;' for she said, `Even here have I looked behind my beholder?'

^{14 Ref} therefore hath one called the well, `The well of the Living One, my beholder;' lo, between Kadesh and Bered.

^{15 Ref} And Hagar beareth to Abram a son; and Abram calleth the name of his son, whom Hagar hath borne, Ishmael;

¹⁶ and Abram `is' a son of eighty and six years in Hagar's bearing Ishmael to Abram.
