^{1 Ref} And after six days Jesus takes with him Peter, and James, and John, his brother, and makes them go up with him into a high mountain by themselves.

^{2 Ref} And he was changed in form before them; and his face was shining like the sun, and his clothing became white as light.

^{3 Ref} And Moses and Elijah came before their eyes, talking with him.

^{4 Ref} And Peter made answer and said to Jesus, Lord, it is good for us to be here: if you will let me, I will make here three tents, one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah.

^{5 Ref} While he was still talking, a bright cloud came over them: and a voice out of the cloud, saying, This is my dearly loved Son, with whom I am well pleased; give ear to him.

^{6 Ref} And at these words the disciples went down on their faces in great fear.

^{7 Ref} And Jesus came and put his hand on them and said, Get up and have no fear.

^{8 Ref} And lifting up their eyes, they saw no one, but Jesus only.

^{9 Ref} And when they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus gave them orders, saying, Let no man have word of what you have seen, till the Son of man has come again from the dead.

^{10 Ref} And his disciples, questioning him, said, Why then do the scribes say that Elijah has to come first?

^{11 Ref} And in answer he said, Elijah truly has to come and put all things right:

^{12 Ref} But I say to you that Elijah has come, and they had no knowledge of him, but did to him whatever they were pleased to do; the same will the Son of man undergo at their hands.

^{13 Ref} Then the disciples saw that he was talking to them of John the Baptist.

^{14 Ref} And when they came to the people, a man went down on his knees to him, saying,

^{15 Ref} Lord have mercy on my son: for he is off his head, and is in great pain; and frequently he goes falling into the fire, and frequently into the water.

^{16 Ref} And I took him to your disciples, and they were not able to make him well.

^{17 Ref} And Jesus, answering, said, O false and foolish generation, how long will I be with you? how long will I put up with you? let him come here to me.

^{18 Ref} And Jesus gave orders to the unclean spirit, and it went out of him: and the boy was made well from that hour.

^{19 Ref} Then the disciples came to Jesus privately, and said, Why were we not able to send it out?

^{20 Ref} And he says to them, Because of your little faith: for truly I say to you, If you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, Be moved from this place to that; and it will be moved; and nothing will be impossible to you.

^{22 Ref} And while they were going about in Galilee, Jesus said to them, The Son of man will be given up into the hands of men;

^{23 Ref} And they will put him to death, and the third day he will come again from the dead. And they were very sad.

^{24 Ref} And when they had come to Capernaum, those who took the Temple tax came to Peter and said, Does not your master make payment of the Temple tax?

^{25 Ref} He says, Yes. And when he came into the house, Jesus said to him, What is your opinion, Simon? from whom do the kings of the earth get payment or tax? from their sons or from other people?

²⁶ And when he said, From other people, Jesus said to him, Then are the sons free.

^{27 Ref} But, so that we may not be a cause of trouble to them, go to the sea, and let down a hook, and take the first fish which comes up; and in his mouth you will see a bit of money: take that, and give it to them for me and you.

^{4 Ref} And Peter answering said to Jesus, `Sir, it is good to us to be here; if thou wilt, we may make here three booths -- for thee one, and for Moses one, and one for Elijah.'

^{5 Ref} While he is yet speaking, lo, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and lo, a voice out of the cloud, saying, `This is My Son, -- the Beloved, in whom I did delight; hear him.'

^{6 Ref} And the disciples having heard, did fall upon their face, and were exceedingly afraid,

^{7 Ref} and Jesus having come near, touched them, and said, `Rise, be not afraid,'

^{8 Ref} and having lifted up their eyes, they saw no one, except Jesus only.

^{9 Ref} And as they are coming down from the mount, Jesus charged them, saying, `Say to no one the vision, till the Son of Man out of the dead may rise.'

^{10 Ref} And his disciples questioned him, saying, `Why then do the scribes say that Elijah it behoveth to come first?'

^{11 Ref} And Jesus answering said to them, `Elijah doth indeed come first, and shall restore all things,

^{12 Ref} and I say to you -- Elijah did already come, and they did not know him, but did with him whatever they would, so also the Son of Man is about to suffer by them.'

^{13 Ref} Then understood the disciples that concerning John the Baptist he spake to them.

^{14 Ref} And when they came unto the multitude, there came to him a man, kneeling down to him,

^{15 Ref} and saying, `Sir, deal kindly with my son, for he is lunatic, and doth suffer miserably, for often he doth fall into the fire, and often into the water,

^{16 Ref} and I brought him near to thy disciples, and they were not able to heal him.'

^{17 Ref} And Jesus answering said, `O generation, unstedfast and perverse, till when shall I be with you? till when shall I bear you? bring him to me hither;'

^{18 Ref} and Jesus rebuked him, and the demon went out of him, and the lad was healed from that hour.

^{19 Ref} Then the disciples having come to Jesus by himself, said, `Wherefore were we not able to cast him out?'

^{20 Ref} And Jesus said to them, `Through your want of faith; for verily I say to you, if ye may have faith as a grain of mustard, ye shall say to this mount, Remove hence to yonder place, and it shall remove, and nothing shall be impossible to you,

²¹ and this kind doth not go forth except in prayer and fasting.'

^{22 Ref} And while they are living in Galilee, Jesus said to them, `The Son of Man is about to be delivered up to the hands of men,

^{23 Ref} and they shall kill him, and the third day he shall rise,' and they were exceeding sorry.

^{24 Ref} And they having come to Capernaum, those receiving the didrachms came near to Peter, and said, `Your teacher -- doth he not pay the didrachms?' He saith, `Yes.'

^{25 Ref} And when he came into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, `What thinkest thou, Simon? the kings of the earth -- from whom do they receive custom or poll-tax? from their sons or from the strangers?'

²⁶ Peter saith to him, `From the strangers.' Jesus said to him, `Then are the sons free;

^{27 Ref} but, that we may not cause them to stumble, having gone to the sea, cast a hook, and the fish that hath come up first take thou up, and having opened its mouth, thou shalt find a stater, that having taken, give to them for me and thee.'

^{6 Ref} When the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces, and were very afraid.

^{7 Ref} Jesus came and touched them and said, "Get up, and don't be afraid."

^{8 Ref} Lifting up their eyes, they saw no one, except Jesus alone.

^{9 Ref} As they were coming down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, "Don't tell anyone what you saw, until the Son of Man has risen from the dead."

^{10 Ref} His disciples asked him, saying, "Then why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?"

^{11 Ref} Jesus answered them, "Elijah indeed comes first, and will restore all things,

^{12 Ref} but I tell you that Elijah has come already, and they didn't recognize him, but did to him whatever they wanted to. Even so the Son of Man will also suffer by them."

^{13 Ref} Then the disciples understood that he spoke to them of John the Baptizer.

^{14 Ref} When they came to the multitude, a man came to him, kneeling down to him, saying,

^{15 Ref} "Lord, have mercy on my son, for he is epileptic, and suffers grievously; for he often falls into the fire, and often into the water.

^{16 Ref} So I brought him to your disciples, and they could not cure him."

^{17 Ref} Jesus answered, "Faithless and perverse generation! How long will I be with you? How long will I bear with you? Bring him here to me."

^{18 Ref} Jesus rebuked him, the demon went out of him, and the boy was cured from that hour.

^{19 Ref} Then the disciples came to Jesus privately, and said, "Why weren't we able to cast it out?"

^{20 Ref} He said to them, "Because of your unbelief. For most assuredly I tell you, if you have faith as a grain of mustard seed, you will tell this mountain, 'Move from here to there,' and it will move; and nothing will be impossible for you.

²¹ But this kind doesn't go out except by prayer and fasting."

^{22 Ref} While they were staying in Galilee, Jesus said to them, "The Son of Man is about to be delivered up into the hands of men,

^{23 Ref} and they will kill him, and the third day he will be raised up." They were exceedingly sorry.

^{24 Ref} When they had come to Capernaum, those who collected the didrachma coins{A didrachma is a Greek silver coin worth 2 drachmas, about as much as 2 Roman denarii, or about 2 days wages. It was commonly used to pay the half-shekel temple tax, because 2 drachmas were worth one half shekel of silver.} came to Peter, and said, "Doesn't your teacher pay the didrachma?"

^{25 Ref} He said, "Yes." When he came into the house, Jesus anticipated him, saying, "What do you think, Simon? From whom do the kings of the earth receive toll or tribute? From their children, or from strangers?"

²⁶ Peter said to him, "From strangers." Jesus said to him, "Therefore the children are exempt.

^{27 Ref} But, lest we cause them to stumble, go to the sea, and cast a hook, and take up the first fish that comes up. When you have opened its mouth, you will find a stater coin.{A stater is a silver coin equivalent to four Attic or two Alexandrian drachmas, or a Jewish shekel: just exactly enough to cover the half-shekel Temple Tax for two people.} Take that, and give it to them for me and you."
