Isaiah 63
Young's Literal Translation (YLT)
1 Ref `Who `is' this coming from Edom? With dyed garments from Bozrah? This that is honourable in his clothing, Travelling in the abundance of his power?' -- `I, speaking in righteousness, mighty to save.'
2 Ref `Wherefore `is' thy clothing red? And thy garments as treading in a wine fat?'
3 Ref -- `A wine-press I have trodden by myself, And of the peoples there is no one with me, And I tread them in mine anger, And I trample them in my fury, Sprinkled is their strength on my garments, And all my clothing I have polluted.
4 Ref For the day of vengeance `is' in my heart, And the year of my redeemed hath come.
5 Ref And I look attentively, and there is none helping, And I am astonished that there is none supporting, And give salvation to me doth mine own arm. And my wrath -- it hath supported me.
6 Ref And I tread down peoples in mine anger, And I make them drunk in my fury, And I bring down to earth their strength.
7 Ref The kind acts of Jehovah I make mention of, The praises of Jehovah, According to all that Jehovah hath done for us, And the abundance of the goodness to the house of Israel, That He hath done for them, According to His mercies, And according to the abundance of His kind acts.
8 Ref And He saith, Only My people they `are', Sons -- they lie not, and He is to them for a saviour.
9 Ref In all their distress `He is' no adversary, And the messenger of His presence saved them, In His love and in His pity He redeemed them, And He doth lift them up, And beareth them all the days of old.
10 Ref And they have rebelled and grieved His Holy Spirit, And He turneth to them for an enemy, He Himself hath fought against them.
11 Ref And He remembereth the days of old, Moses -- his people. Where `is' He who is bringing them up from the sea, The shepherd of his flock? Where `is' He who is putting in its midst His Holy Spirit?
12 Ref Leading by the right hand of Moses, the arm of His glory, Cleaving waters from before them, To make to Himself a name age-during.
13 Ref Leading them through the depths, As a horse in a plain they stumble not.
14 Ref As a beast into a valley goeth down, The Spirit of Jehovah causeth him to rest, So hast Thou led Thy people, To make to Thyself a glorious name.
15 Ref Look attentively from the heavens, And see from Thy holy and beauteous habitation, Where `is' Thy zeal and Thy might? The multitude of Thy bowels and Thy mercies Towards me have refrained themselves.
16 Ref For Thou `art' our Father, For Abraham hath not known us, And Israel doth not acknowledge us, Thou, O Jehovah, `art' our Father, Our redeemer from the age, `is' Thy name.
17 Ref Why causest Thou us to wander, O Jehovah, from Thy ways? Thou hardenest our heart from Thy fear, Turn back for Thy servants' sake, The tribes of Thine inheritance.
18 Ref For a little while did Thy holy people possess, Our adversaries have trodden down Thy sanctuary.
19 Ref We have been from of old, Thou hast not ruled over them, Not called is Thy name upon them!
Bible in Basic English (BBE)
1 Ref Who is this who comes from Edom, with blood-red robes from Bozrah? he whose clothing is fair, stepping with pride in his great strength? I whose glory is in the right, strong for salvation.
2 Ref Why is your clothing red, and why are your robes like those of one who is crushing the grapes?
3 Ref I have been crushing the grapes by myself, and of the peoples there was no man with me: in my wrath and in my passion, they were crushed under my feet; and my robes are marked with their life-blood, and all my clothing is red.
4 Ref For the day of punishment is in my heart, and the year for the payment of the price for my people has come.
5 Ref And I saw that there was no helper, and I was wondering that no one gave them support: so my arm did the work of salvation, and my wrath was my support.
6 Ref And in my passion the peoples were crushed under my feet, and broken in my wrath, and I put down their strength to the earth.
7 Ref I will give news of the mercies of the Lord, and his great acts, even all the things the Lord has done for us, in his great grace to the house of Israel; even all he has done for us in his unnumbered mercies.
8 Ref For he said, Truly they are my people, children who will not be false: so he was their saviour out of all their trouble.
9 Ref It was no sent one or angel, but he himself who was their saviour: in his love and in his pity he took up their cause, and he took them in his arms, caring for them all through the years.
10 Ref But they went against him, causing grief to his holy spirit: so he was turned against them, and made war on them.
11 Ref Then the early days came to their minds, the days of Moses his servant: and they said, Where is he who made the keeper of his flock come up from the sea? where is he who put his holy spirit among them,
12 Ref He who made the arm of his glory go at the right hand of Moses, by whom the waters were parted before them, to make himself an eternal name;
13 Ref He who made them go through the deep waters, like a horse in the waste land?
14 Ref Like the cattle which go down into the valley, they went without falling, the spirit of the Lord guiding them: so you went before your people, to make yourself a great name.
15 Ref Let your eyes be looking down from heaven, from your holy and beautiful house: where is your deep feeling, the working of your power? do not keep back the moving of your pity and your mercies:
16 Ref For you are our father, though Abraham has no knowledge of us, and Israel gives no thought to us: you, O Lord, are our father; from the earliest days you have taken up our cause.
17 Ref O Lord, why do you send us wandering from your ways, making our hearts hard, so that we have no fear of you? Come back, because of your servants, the tribes of your heritage.
18 Ref Why have evil men gone over your holy place, so that it has been crushed under the feet of our haters?
19 Ref We have become as those who were never ruled by you, on whom your name was not named.
King James Version (KJV)
1 Ref Who is this that cometh from Edom, with dyed garments from Bozrah? this that is glorious in his apparel, travelling in the greatness of his strength? I that speak in righteousness, mighty to save.
2 Ref Wherefore art thou red in thine apparel, and thy garments like him that treadeth in the winefat?
3 Ref I have trodden the winepress alone; and of the people there was none with me: for I will tread them in mine anger, and trample them in my fury; and their blood shall be sprinkled upon my garments, and I will stain all my raiment.
4 Ref For the day of vengeance is in mine heart, and the year of my redeemed is come.
5 Ref And I looked, and there was none to help; and I wondered that there was none to uphold: therefore mine own arm brought salvation unto me; and my fury, it upheld me.
6 Ref And I will tread down the people in mine anger, and make them drunk in my fury, and I will bring down their strength to the earth.
7 Ref I will mention the lovingkindnesses of the LORD, and the praises of the LORD, according to all that the LORD hath bestowed on us, and the great goodness toward the house of Israel, which he hath bestowed on them according to his mercies, and according to the multitude of his lovingkindnesses.
8 Ref For he said, Surely they are my people, children that will not lie: so he was their Saviour.
9 Ref In all their affliction he was afflicted, and the angel of his presence saved them: in his love and in his pity he redeemed them; and he bare them, and carried them all the days of old.
10 Ref But they rebelled, and vexed his holy Spirit: therefore he was turned to be their enemy, and he fought against them.
11 Ref Then he remembered the days of old, Moses, and his people, saying, Where is he that brought them up out of the sea with the shepherd of his flock? where is he that put his holy Spirit within him?
12 Ref That led them by the right hand of Moses with his glorious arm, dividing the water before them, to make himself an everlasting name?
13 Ref That led them through the deep, as an horse in the wilderness, that they should not stumble?
14 Ref As a beast goeth down into the valley, the Spirit of the LORD caused him to rest: so didst thou lead thy people, to make thyself a glorious name.
15 Ref Look down from heaven, and behold from the habitation of thy holiness and of thy glory: where is thy zeal and thy strength, the sounding of thy bowels and of thy mercies toward me? are they restrained?
16 Ref Doubtless thou art our father, though Abraham be ignorant of us, and Israel acknowledge us not: thou, O LORD, art our father, our redeemer; thy name is from everlasting.
17 Ref O LORD, why hast thou made us to err from thy ways, and hardened our heart from thy fear? Return for thy servants' sake, the tribes of thine inheritance.
18 Ref The people of thy holiness have possessed it but a little while: our adversaries have trodden down thy sanctuary.
19 Ref We are thine: thou never barest rule over them; they were not called by thy name.
