^{1 Ref} Now when morning was come, all the chief priests and the elders of the people took counsel against Jesus to put him to death:

^{2 Ref} and they bound him, and led him away, and delivered him up to Pilate the governor.

^{3 Ref} Then Judas, who betrayed him, when he saw that he was condemned, repented himself, and brought back the thirty pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders,

^{4 Ref} saying, I have sinned in that I betrayed innocent blood. But they said, What is that to us? see thou `to it'.

^{5 Ref} And he cast down the pieces of silver into the sanctuary, and departed; and he went away and hanged himself.

^{6 Ref} And the chief priests took the pieces of silver, and said, It is not lawful to put them into the treasury, since it is the price of blood.

⁷ And they took counsel, and bought with them the potter's field, to bury strangers in.

^{8 Ref} Wherefore that field was called, the field of blood, unto this day.

^{9 Ref} Then was fulfilled that which was spoken through Jeremiah the prophet, saying, And they took the thirty pieces of silver, the price of him that was priced, whom `certain' of the children of Israel did price;

^{10 Ref} and they gave them for the potter's field, as the Lord appointed me.

^{11 Ref} Now Jesus stood before the governor: and the governor asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And Jesus said unto him, Thou sayest.

^{12 Ref} And when he was accused by the chief priests and elders, he answered nothing.

^{13 Ref} Then saith Pilate unto him, Hearest thou not how many things they witness against thee?

^{14 Ref} And he gave him no answer, not even to one word: insomuch that the governor marvelled greatly.

^{15 Ref} Now at the feast the governor was wont to release unto the multitude one prisoner, whom they would.

^{16 Ref} And they had then a notable prisoner, called Barabbas.

^{17 Ref} When therefore they were gathered together, Pilate said unto them, Whom will ye that I release unto you? Barabbas, or Jesus who is called Christ?

^{18 Ref} For he knew that for envy they had delivered him up.

^{19 Ref} And while he was sitting on the judgment-seat, his wife sent unto him, saying, Have thou nothing to do with that righteous man; for I have suffered many things this day in a dream because of him.

^{20 Ref} Now the chief priests and the elders persuaded the multitudes that they should ask for Barabbas, and destroy Jesus.

²¹ But the governor answered and said unto them, Which of the two will ye that I release unto you? And they said, Barabbas.

^{22 Ref} Pilate saith unto them, What then shall I do unto Jesus who is called Christ? They all say, Let him be crucified.

^{23 Ref} And he said, Why, what evil hath he done? But they cried out exceedingly, saying, Let him be crucified.

^{24 Ref} So when Pilate saw that he prevailed nothing, but rather that a tumult was arising, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this righteous man; see ye `to it'.

^{25 Ref} And all the people answered and said, His blood `be' on us, and on our children.

^{26 Ref} Then released he unto them Barabbas; but Jesus he scourged and delivered to be crucified.

^{27 Ref} Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium, and gathered unto him the whole band.

^{28 Ref} And they stripped him, and put on him a scarlet robe.

^{29 Ref} And they platted a crown of thorns and put it upon his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they kneeled down before him, and mocked him, saying, Hail, King of the Jews!

^{30 Ref} And they spat upon him, and took the reed and smote him on the head.

^{31 Ref} And when they had mocked him, they took off from him the robe, and put on him his garments, and led him away to crucify him.

^{32 Ref} And as they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name: him they compelled to go `with them', that he might bear his cross.

^{33 Ref} And they were come unto a place called Golgotha, that is to say, The place of a skull,

^{34 Ref} they gave him wine to drink mingled with gall: and when he had tasted it, he would not drink.

^{35 Ref} And when they had crucified him, they parted his garments among them, casting lots;

^{36 Ref} and they sat and watched him there.

^{37 Ref} And they set up over his head his accusation written, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

^{38 Ref} Then are there crucified with him two robbers, one on the right hand and one on the left.

^{39 Ref} And they that passed by railed on him, wagging their heads,

^{40 Ref} and saying, Thou that destroyest the temple, and buildest it in three days, save thyself: if thou art the Son of God, come down from the cross.

^{41 Ref} In like manner also the chief priests mocking `him', with the scribes and elders, said,

^{42 Ref} He saved others; himself he cannot save. He is the King of Israel; let him now come down from the cross, and we will believe on him.

^{43 Ref} He trusteth on God; let him deliver him now, if he desireth him: for he said, I am the Son of God.

^{44 Ref} And the robbers also that were crucified with him cast upon him the same reproach.

^{45 Ref} Now from the sixth hour there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.

^{46 Ref} And about the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?

^{47 Ref} And some of them stood there, when they heard it, said, This man calleth Elijah.

^{48 Ref} And straightway one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him to drink.

⁴⁹ And the rest said, Let be; let us see whether Elijah cometh to save him.

^{50 Ref} And Jesus cried again with a loud voice, and yielded up his spirit.

^{51 Ref} And behold, the veil of the temple was rent in two from the top to the bottom; and the earth did quake; and the rocks were rent;

^{52 Ref} and the tombs were opened; and many bodies of the saints that had fallen asleep were raised;

^{53 Ref} and coming forth out of the tombs after his resurrection they entered into the holy city and appeared unto many.

^{54 Ref} Now the centurion, and they that were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earthquake, and the things that were done, feared exceedingly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.

^{55 Ref} And many women were there beholding from afar, who had followed Jesus from Galilee, ministering unto him:

^{56 Ref} among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

^{57 Ref} And when even was come, there came a rich man from Arimathaea, named Joseph, who also himself was Jesus' disciple:

^{58 Ref} this man went to Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate commanded it to be given up.

⁵⁹ And Joseph took the body, and wrapped it in a clean linen cloth,

^{60 Ref} and laid it in his own new tomb, which he had hewn out in the rock: and he rolled a great stone to the door of the tomb, and departed.

^{61 Ref} And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, sitting over against the sepulchre.

^{62 Ref} Now on the morrow, which is `the day' after the Preparation, the chief priests and the Pharisees were gathered together unto Pilate,

^{63 Ref} saying, Sir, we remember that that deceiver said while he was yet alive, After three days I rise again.

^{64 Ref} Command therefore that the sepulchre be made sure until the third day, lest haply his disciples come and steal him away, and say unto the people, He is risen from the dead: and the last error will be worse than the first.

^{65 Ref} Pilate said unto them, Ye have a guard: go, make it `as' sure as ye can.

^{66 Ref} So they went, and made the sepulchre sure, sealing the stone, the guard being with them.

^{25 Ref} All the people answered, "May his blood be on us, and on our children!"

^{26 Ref} Then he released to them Barabbas, but Jesus he flogged and delivered to be crucified.

^{27 Ref} Then the governor's soldiers took Jesus into the Praetorium, and gathered the whole garrison together against him.

^{28 Ref} They stripped him, and put a scarlet robe on him.

^{29 Ref} They braided a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and a reed in his right hand; and they kneeled down before him, and mocked him, saying, "Hail, King of the Jews!"

^{30 Ref} They spat on him, and took the reed and struck him on the head.

^{31 Ref} When they had mocked him, they took the robe off of him, and put his clothes on him, and led him away to crucify him.

^{32 Ref} As they came out, they found a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, and they compelled him to go with them, that he might carry his cross.

^{33 Ref} They came to a place called "Golgotha," that is to say, "The place of a skull."

^{34 Ref} They gave him sour wine to drink mixed with gall. When he had tasted it, he would not drink.

^{36 Ref} and they sat and watched him there.

^{37 Ref} They set up over his head the accusation against him written, "THIS IS JESUS, THE KING OF THE JEWS."

^{38 Ref} Then there were two robbers crucified with him, one on his right hand and one on the left.

^{40 Ref} and saying, "You who destroy the temple, and build it in three days, save yourself! If you are the Son of God, come down from the cross!"

^{42 Ref} "He saved others, but he can't save himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him come down from the cross now, and we will believe in him.

^{43 Ref} He trusts in God. Let God deliver him now, if he wants him; for he said, 'I am the Son of God.'"

^{44 Ref} The robbers also who were crucified with him cast on him the same reproach.

^{45 Ref} Now from the sixth hour{noon} there was darkness over all the land until the ninth hour.{3:00 P. M.}

^{46 Ref} About the ninth hour Jesus cried with a loud voice, saying, "Eli, Eli, lima{TR reads "lama" instead of "lima"} sabachthani?" That is, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?"

^{47 Ref} Some of them who stood there, when they heard it, said, "This man is calling Elijah."

^{48 Ref} Immediately one of them ran, and took a sponge, and filled it with vinegar, and put it on a reed, and gave him a drink.

⁴⁹ The rest said, "Let him be. Let's see whether Elijah comes to save him."

^{50 Ref} Jesus cried again with a loud voice, and yielded up his spirit.

^{64 Ref} Command therefore that the tomb be made secure until the third day, lest perhaps his disciples come at night and steal him away, and tell the people, 'He is risen from the dead;' and the last deception will be worse than the first."

^{65 Ref} Pilate said to them, "You have a guard. Go, make it as secure as you can."

^{66 Ref} So they went with the guard and made the tomb secure, sealing the stone.

^{2 Ref} And they put cords on him and took him away, and gave him up to Pilate, the ruler.

^{3 Ref} Then Judas, who was false to him, seeing that he was to be put to death, in his regret took back the thirty bits of silver to the chief priests and those in authority,

^{4 Ref} Saying, I have done wrong in giving into your hands an upright man. But they said, What is that to us? it is your business.

^{5 Ref} And he put down the silver in the Temple and went out, and put himself to death by hanging.

^{6 Ref} And the chief priests took the silver and said, It is not right to put it in the Temple store for it is the price of blood.

⁷ And they made a decision to get with the silver the potter's field, as a place for the dead of other countries.

^{8 Ref} For this cause that field was named, The field of blood, to this day.

^{9 Ref} Then came true that which was said by Jeremiah the prophet, And they took the thirty bits of silver, the price of him who was valued by the children of Israel;

^{10 Ref} And they gave them for the potter's field, as I had word from the Lord.

^{11 Ref} And Jesus was before the ruler, who put a question to him, Are you the King of the Jews? And Jesus said to him, You say so.

^{12 Ref} But when the chief priests and those in authority made statements against him, he gave no answer.

^{13 Ref} Then says Pilate to him, Do you give no attention to what their witnesses say against you?

^{14 Ref} And he gave him no answer, not even a word: so that the ruler was greatly surprised.

^{15 Ref} Now at the feast it was the way for the ruler to let free to the people one prisoner, at their selection.

^{16 Ref} And they had then an important prisoner, whose name was Barabbas.

^{17 Ref} So when they came together, Pilate said to them, Whom will you have? Barabbas, or Jesus, who is named Christ?

^{18 Ref} For he saw that for envy they had given him up.

^{19 Ref} And while he was on the judge's seat, his wife sent to him, saying, Have nothing to do with that upright man, for I have had much trouble this day in a dream because of him.

^{20 Ref} Now the chief priests and those in authority got the people to make request for Barabbas, and for Jesus to be put to death.

^{22 Ref} Pilate says to them, What, then, am I to do with Jesus, who is named Christ? They all say, Let him be put to death on the cross.

^{23 Ref} And he said, Why, what evil has he done? But they gave loud cries, saying, To the cross with him!

^{24 Ref} So when Pilate saw that he was able to do nothing, but that trouble was working up, he took water and, washing his hands before the people, said, The blood of this upright man is not on my hands: you are responsible.

^{25 Ref} And all the people made answer and said, Let his blood be on us, and on our children.

^{26 Ref} Then he let Barabbas go free: but after having Jesus whipped, he gave him up to be put to death on the cross.

^{27 Ref} Then the ruler's armed men took Jesus into the open square, and got all their band together.

^{28 Ref} And they took off his clothing, and put on him a red robe.

^{29 Ref} And they made a crown of thorns and put it on his head, and put a rod in his right hand, and they went down on their knees before him, and made sport of him, saying, Long life to the King of the Jews.

^{30 Ref} And they put shame on him, and gave him blows on the head with the rod.

^{31 Ref} And when they had made sport of him, they took the robe off him, and put his clothing on him, and took him away to put him on the cross.

^{32 Ref} And while they were coming out, they saw a man of Cyrene, Simon by name, and they made him go with them, so that he might take up his cross.

^{33 Ref} And when they came to the place named Golgotha, that is to say, Dead Man's Head,

^{34 Ref} They gave him wine mixed with bitter drink: and after tasting it, he took no more.

^{35 Ref} And when they had put him on the cross, they made division of his clothing among them by the decision of chance.

^{36 Ref} And they were seated there watching him.

^{37 Ref} And they put up over his head the statement of his crime in writing, THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

^{38 Ref} Then two thieves were put on crosses with him, one on the right and one on the left.

^{39 Ref} And those who went by said bitter words to him, shaking their heads and saying,

^{40 Ref} You who would give the Temple to destruction and put it up again in three days, get yourself free: if you are the Son of God, come down from the cross.

^{41 Ref} In the same way, the chief priests, making sport of him, with the scribes and those in authority, said,

^{42 Ref} A saviour of others, he has no salvation for himself. If he is the King of Israel, let him now come down from the cross, and we will have faith in him.

^{43 Ref} He put his faith in God; let God be his saviour now, if he will have him; for he said, I am the Son of God.

^{44 Ref} And the thieves who were on the crosses said evil words to him.

^{45 Ref} Now from the sixth hour it was dark over all the land till the ninth hour.

^{46 Ref} And about the ninth hour Jesus gave a loud cry, saying, Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani? that is, My God, my God, why are you turned away from me?

^{47 Ref} And some of those who were near by, hearing it, said, This man is crying to Elijah.

^{48 Ref} And straight away one of them went quickly, and took a sponge, and made it full of bitter wine, and put it on a rod and gave him drink.

⁴⁹ And the rest said, Let him be; let us see if Elijah will come to his help.

^{50 Ref} And Jesus gave another loud cry, and gave up his spirit.

^{51 Ref} And the curtain of the Temple was parted in two from end to end; and there was an earth-shock; and the rocks were broken;

^{52 Ref} And the resting-places of the dead came open; and the bodies of a number of sleeping saints came to life;

^{53 Ref} And coming out of their resting-places, after he had come again from the dead, they went into the holy town and were seen by a number of people.

^{54 Ref} Now the captain and those who were with him watching Jesus, when they saw the earth-shock and the things which were done, were in great fear and said, Truly this was a son of God.

^{55 Ref} And a number of women were there, watching from a distance, who had come with Jesus from Galilee, waiting on his needs.

^{56 Ref} Among whom was Mary Magdalene, and Mary, the mother of James and Joses, and the mother of the sons of Zebedee.

^{57 Ref} And in the evening, there came a man of wealth from Arimathaea, Joseph by name, who was a disciple of Jesus:

^{58 Ref} This man went in to Pilate, and made a request for the body of Jesus. Then Pilate gave orders for it to be given to him.

⁵⁹ And Joseph took the body, folding it in clean linen,

^{60 Ref} And put it in the resting-place which had been cut out of the rock for himself; and after rolling a great stone to the door of it he went away.

^{61 Ref} And Mary Magdalene was there, and the other Mary, seated by the place of the dead.

^{62 Ref} Now on the day after the getting ready of the Passover, the chief priests and Pharisees came together to Pilate,

^{63 Ref} Saying, Sir, we have in mind how that false man said, while he was still living, After three days I will come again from the dead.

^{64 Ref} Give orders, then, that the place where his body is may be made safe till the third day, for fear that his disciples come and take him away secretly and say to the people, He has come back from the dead: and the last error will be worse than the first.

^{65 Ref} Pilate said to them, You have watchmen; go and make it as safe as you are able.

^{66 Ref} So they went, and made safe the place where his body was, putting a stamp on the stone, and the watchmen were with them.
