Titus 1

American Standard-ASV1901 (ASV)

1 Ref Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God's elect, and the knowledge of the truth which is according to godliness,

2 Ref in hope of eternal life, which God, who cannot lie, promised before times eternal;

3 Ref but in his own seasons manifested his word in the message, wherewith I was intrusted according to the commandment of God our Saviour;

4 Ref to Titus, my true child after a common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Saviour.

5 Ref For this cause left I thee in Crete, that thou shouldest set in order the things that were wanting, and appoint elders in every city, as I gave thee charge;

6 Ref if any man is blameless, the husband of one wife, having children that believe, who are not accused of riot or unruly.

7 Ref For the bishop must be blameless, as God's steward; not self-willed, not soon angry, no brawler, no striker, not greedy of filthy lucre;

8 Ref but given to hospitality, as lover of good, sober-minded, just, holy, self-controlled;

9 Ref holding to the faithful word which is according to the teaching, that he may be able to exhort in the sound doctrine, and to convict the gainsayers.

10 Ref For there are many unruly men, vain talkers and deceivers, specially they of the circumcision,

11 Ref whose mouths must be stopped; men who overthrow whole houses, teaching things which they ought not, for filthy lucre's sake.

12 Ref One of themselves, a prophet of their own, said, Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, idle gluttons.

13 Ref This testimony is true. For which cause reprove them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith,

14 Ref not giving heed to Jewish fables, and commandments of men who turn away from the truth.

15 Ref To the pure all things are pure: but to them that are defiled and unbelieving nothing is pure; but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.

16 Ref They profess that they know God; but by their works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work reprobate.

3 Ref (and He manifested in proper times His word,) in preaching, which I was entrusted with, according to a charge of God our Saviour,

4 Ref to Titus -- true child according to a common faith: Grace, kindness, peace, from God the Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ our Saviour!

5 Ref For this cause left I thee in Crete, that the things lacking thou mayest arrange, and mayest set down in every city elders, as I did appoint to thee;

6 Ref if any one is blameless, of one wife a husband, having children stedfast, not under accusation of riotous living or insubordinate --

7 Ref for it behoveth the overseer to be blameless, as God's steward, not self-pleased, nor irascible, not given to wine, not a striker, not given to filthy lucre;

8 Ref but a lover of strangers, a lover of good men, sober-minded, righteous, kind, self-controlled,

9 Ref holding -- according to the teaching -- to the stedfast word, that he may be able also to exhort in the sound teaching, and the gainsayers to convict;

10 Ref for there are many both insubordinate, vain-talkers, and mind-deceivers -- especially they of the circumcision --

11 Ref whose mouth it behoveth to stop, who whole households do overturn, teaching what things it behoveth not, for filthy lucre's sake.

12 Ref A certain one of them, a prophet of their own, said -- `Cretans! always liars, evil beasts, lazy bellies!'

14 Ref not giving heed to Jewish fables and commands of men, turning themselves away from the truth;

15 Ref all things, indeed, `are' pure to the pure, and to the defiled and unstedfast `is' nothing pure, but of them defiled `are' even the mind and the conscience;

16 Ref God they profess to know, and in the works they deny `Him', being abominable, and disobedient, and unto every good work disapproved.
