John 2

American Standard-ASV1901 (ASV)

1 Ref And the third day there was a marriage in Cana of Galilee; and the mother of Jesus was there:

2 Ref and Jesus also was bidden, and his disciples, to the marriage.

3 Ref And when the wine failed, the mother of Jesus saith unto him, They have no wine.

4 Ref And Jesus saith unto her, Woman, what have I to do with thee? mine hour is not yet come.

5 Ref His mother saith unto the servants, Whatsoever he saith unto you, do it.

6 Ref Now there were six waterpots of stone set there after the Jews' manner of purifying, containing two or three firkins apiece.

7 Ref Jesus saith unto them, Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.

8 Ref And he saith unto them, Draw out now, and bear unto the ruler of the feast. And they bare it.

9 Ref And when the ruler of the feast tasted the water now become wine, and knew not whence it was (but the servants that had drawn the water knew), the ruler of the feast calleth the bridegroom,

10 Ref and saith unto him, Every man setteth on first the good wine; and when `men' have drunk freely, `then' that which is worse: thou hast kept the good wine until now.

11 Ref This beginning of his signs did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested his glory; and his disciples believed on him.

12 Ref After this he went down to Capernaum, he, and his mother, and `his' brethren, and his disciples; and there they abode not many days.

13 Ref And the passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

14 Ref And he found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting:

15 Ref and he made a scourge of cords, and cast all out of the temple, both the sheep and the oxen; and he poured out the changers' money, and overthrew their tables;

16 Ref and to them that sold the doves he said, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house a house of merchandise.

17 Ref His disciples remembered that it was written, Zeal for thy house shall eat me up.

18 Ref The Jews therefore answered and said unto him, What sign showest thou unto us, seeing that thou doest these things?

19 Ref Jesus answered and said unto them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

20 The Jews therefore said, Forty and six years was this temple in building, and wilt thou raise it up in three days?

21 Ref But he spake of the temple of his body.

22 Ref When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he spake this; and they believed the scripture, and the word which Jesus had said.

23 Ref Now when he was in Jerusalem at the passover, during the feast, many believed on his name, beholding his signs which he did.

24 Ref But Jesus did not trust himself unto them, for that he knew all men,

25 Ref and because he needed not that any one should bear witness concerning man; for he himself knew what was in man.

Bible in Basic English (BBE)

1 Ref On the third day two people were going to be married at Cana in Galilee. The mother of Jesus was there:

2 Ref And Jesus with his disciples came as guests.

3 Ref When they had not enough wine, the mother of Jesus said to him, They have no wine.

4 Ref Jesus said to her, Woman, this is not your business; my time is still to come.

5 Ref His mother said to the servants, Whatever he says to you, do it.

6 Ref Now six pots of stone, every one taking two or three firkins of water, were placed there for the purpose of washing, as is the way of the Jews.

7 Ref Jesus said to the servants, Make the pots full of water. And they made them full to the top.

8 Ref Then he said to them, Now take some, and give it to the master of the feast. So they took it to him.

9 Ref After tasting the water which had now become wine, the master of the feast (having no idea where it came from, though it was clear to the servants who took the water out) sent for the newly-married man,

10 Ref And said to him, Every man first puts out his best wine and when all have had enough he puts out what is not so good; but you have kept the good wine till now.

11 Ref This, the first of his signs, Jesus did at Cana in Galilee and let his glory be seen openly; and his disciples put their faith in him.

12 Ref After this he went down to Capernaum, with his mother, his brothers, and his disciples, and they were there not more than two or three days.

13 Ref The time of the Passover of the Jews was near and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

14 Ref And there in the Temple he saw men trading in oxen and sheep and doves, and he saw the changers of money in their seats:

15 Ref And he made a whip of small cords and put them all out of the Temple, with the sheep and the oxen, sending in all directions the small money of the changers and overturning their tables;

16 Ref And to those who were trading in doves he said, Take these things away; do not make my Father's house a market.

17 Ref And it came to the minds of the disciples that the Writings say, I am on fire with passion for your house.

18 Ref Then the Jews put this question to him: What sign of authority have you to give us, seeing that you do these things?

19 Ref And Jesus said to them, Send destruction on this Temple and I will put it up again in three days.

20 The Jews said, The building of this Temple took forty-six years; and you will put it up in three days!

21 Ref But his words were about that holy building which was his body.

22 Ref So when he had come back again from the dead, the memory of these words came back to the disciples, and they had faith in the holy Writings and in the word which Jesus had said.

23 Ref Now while he was in Jerusalem at the feast of the Passover, a great number of people came to have faith in his name, after seeing the signs which he did.

24 Ref But Jesus did not have faith in them, because he had knowledge of them all.

25 Ref He had no need for any witness about man; for he himself had knowledge of what was in man.
