^{1 Ref} At that season Herod the tetrarch heard the report concerning Jesus,

^{2 Ref} and said unto his servants, This is John the Baptist; he is risen from the dead; and therefore do these powers work in him.

^{3 Ref} For Herod had laid hold on John, and bound him, and put him in prison for the sake of Herodias, his brother Philip's wife.

^{4 Ref} For John said unto him, It is not lawful for thee to have her.

^{5 Ref} And when he would have put him to death, he feared the multitude, because they counted him as a prophet.

^{6 Ref} But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias danced in the midst, and pleased Herod.

^{7 Ref} Whereupon he promised with an oath to give her whatsoever she should ask.

^{8 Ref} And she, being put forward by her mother, saith, Give me here on a platter the head of John the Baptist.

^{9 Ref} And the king was grieved; but for the sake of his oaths, and of them that sat at meat with him, he commanded it to be given;

^{10 Ref} and he sent and beheaded John in the prison.

^{11 Ref} And his head was brought on a platter, and given to the damsel: and she brought it to her mother.

^{12 Ref} And his disciples came, and took up the corpse, and buried him; and they went and told Jesus.

^{13 Ref} Now when Jesus heard `it', he withdrew from thence in a boat, to a desert place apart: and when the multitudes heard `thereof,' they followed him on foot from the cities.

^{14 Ref} And he came forth, and saw a great multitude, and he had compassion on them, and healed their sick.

^{15 Ref} And when even was come, the disciples came to him, saying, The place is desert, and the time is already past; send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves food.

^{16 Ref} But Jesus said unto them, They have no need to go away; give ye them to eat.

^{17 Ref} And they say unto him, We have here but five loaves, and two fishes.

¹⁸ And he said, Bring them hither to me.

^{19 Ref} And he commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass; and he took the five loaves, and the two fishes, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, and brake and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples to the multitudes.

^{20 Ref} And they all ate, and were filled: and they took up that which remained over of the broken pieces, twelve baskets full.

^{21 Ref} And they that did eat were about five thousand men, besides women and children.

^{22 Ref} And straightway he constrained the disciples to enter into the boat, and to go before him unto the other side, till he should send the multitudes away.

^{23 Ref} And after he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain apart to pray: and when even was come, he was there alone.

^{24 Ref} But the boat was now in the midst of the sea, distressed by the waves; for the wind was contrary.

^{25 Ref} And in the fourth watch of the night he came unto them, walking upon the sea.

^{26 Ref} And when the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a ghost; and they cried out for fear.

^{27 Ref} But straightway Jesus spake unto them, saying Be of good cheer; it is I; be not afraid.

^{28 Ref} And Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it be thou, bid me come unto the upon the waters.

^{29 Ref} And he said, Come. And Peter went down from the boat, and walked upon the waters to come to Jesus.

^{30 Ref} But when he saw the wind, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, Lord, save me.

^{31 Ref} And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and took hold of him, and saith unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt?

^{32 Ref} And when they were gone up into the boat, the wind ceased.

^{33 Ref} And they that were in the boat worshipped him, saying, Of a truth thou art the Son of God.

^{34 Ref} And when they had crossed over, they came to the land, unto Gennesaret.

^{35 Ref} And when the men of that place knew him, they sent into all that region round about, and brought unto him all that were sick,

^{36 Ref} and they besought him that they might only touch the border of his garment: and as many as touched were made whole.

^{14 Ref} Jesus went out, and he saw a great multitude. He had compassion on them, and healed their sick.

^{15 Ref} When evening had come, his disciples came to him, saying, "This place is deserted, and the hour is already late. Send the multitudes away, that they may go into the villages, and buy themselves food."

^{16 Ref} But Jesus said to them, "They don't need to go away. You give them something to eat."

^{17 Ref} They told him, "We only have here five loaves and two fish."

¹⁸ He said, "Bring them here to me."

^{19 Ref} He commanded the multitudes to sit down on the grass; and he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to heaven, he blessed, broke and gave the loaves to the disciples, and the disciples gave to the multitudes.

^{22 Ref} Immediately Jesus made the disciples get into the boat, and to go ahead of him to the other side, while he sent the multitudes away.

^{23 Ref} After he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into the mountain by himself to pray. When evening had come, he was there alone.

^{24 Ref} But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, distressed by the waves, for the wind was contrary.

^{25 Ref} In the fourth watch of the night,{The night was equally divided into four watches, so the fourth watch is approximately 3:00 A. M. to sunrise.} Jesus came to them, walking on the sea.

^{26 Ref} When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, "It's a ghost!" and they cried out for fear.

^{27 Ref} But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying "Cheer up! I AM!{see Exodus 3:14.} Don't be afraid."

^{28 Ref} Peter answered him and said, "Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the waters."

^{29 Ref} He said, "Come!" Peter stepped down from the boat, and walked on the waters to come to Jesus.

^{30 Ref} But when he saw that the wind was strong, he was afraid, and beginning to sink, he cried out, saying, "Lord, save me!"

^{31 Ref} Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, "You of little faith, why did you doubt?"

^{32 Ref} When they got up into the boat, the wind ceased.

^{33 Ref} Those who were in the boat came and worshiped him, saying, "You are truly the Son of God!"

^{34 Ref} When they had crossed over, they came to the land of Gennesaret.

^{35 Ref} When the men of that place recognized him, they sent into all that surrounding region, and brought to him all who were sick,

^{36 Ref} and they begged him that they might just touch the fringe of his garment. As many as touched it were made whole.

^{1 Ref} At that time news of Jesus came to Herod the king;

^{2 Ref} And he said to his servants, This is John the Baptist; he has come back from the dead, and so these powers are working in him.

^{4 Ref} Because John had said to him, It is not right for you to have her.

^{5 Ref} And he would have put him to death, but for his fear of the people, because in their eyes John was a prophet.

^{6 Ref} But when Herod's birthday came, the daughter of Herodias was dancing before them, and Herod was pleased with her.

^{7 Ref} So he gave her his word with an oath to let her have whatever she might make request for.

^{8 Ref} And she, at her mother's suggestion, said, Give me here on a plate the head of John the Baptist.

^{9 Ref} And the king was sad; but because of his oaths and because of his guests, he gave the order for it to be given to her;

^{10 Ref} And he sent and had John's head cut off in the prison.

^{11 Ref} And his head was put on a plate and given to the girl; and she took it to her mother.

^{12 Ref} And his disciples came, and took up his body and put it in the earth; and they went and gave Jesus news of what had taken place.

^{13 Ref} Now when it came to the ears of Jesus, he went away from there in a boat, to a waste place by himself: and the people hearing of it, went after him on foot from the towns.

^{14 Ref} And he came out and saw a great number of people and he had pity on them, and made well those of them who were ill.

^{15 Ref} And when evening had come, the disciples came to him, saying, This place is waste land, and the time is now past; send the people away so that they may go into the towns and get themselves food.

^{16 Ref} But Jesus said to them, There is no need for them to go away; give them food yourselves.

^{17 Ref} And they say to him, We have here but five cakes of bread and two fishes.

¹⁸ And he said, Give them to me.

^{19 Ref} And he gave orders for the people to be seated on the grass; and he took the five cakes of bread and the two fishes and, looking up to heaven, he said words of blessing, and made division of the food, and gave it to the disciples, and the disciples gave it to the people.

^{20 Ref} And they all took of the food and had enough: and they took up twelve baskets full of broken bits which were not used.

^{21 Ref} And those who had food were about five thousand men, in addition to women and children.

^{22 Ref} And straight away he made the disciples get into the boat and go before him to the other side, till he had sent the people away.

^{23 Ref} And after he had sent the people away, he went up into the mountain by himself for prayer: and when evening was come, he was there by himself.

^{24 Ref} But the boat was now in the middle of the sea, and was troubled by the waves: for the wind was against them.

^{25 Ref} And in the fourth watch of the night he came to them, walking on the sea.

^{26 Ref} And when they saw him walking on the sea, they were troubled, saying, It is a spirit; and they gave cries of fear.

^{27 Ref} But straight away Jesus said to them, Take heart; it is I, have no fear.

^{28 Ref} And Peter, answering, said to him, Lord, if it is you, give me the order to come to you on the water.

^{29 Ref} And he said, Come. And Peter got out of the boat, and walking on the water, went to Jesus.

^{30 Ref} But when he saw the wind he was in fear and, starting to go down, he gave a cry, saying, Help, Lord.

^{31 Ref} And straight away Jesus put out his hand and took a grip of him, and said to him, O man of little faith, why were you in doubt?

^{32 Ref} And when they had got into the boat, the wind went down.

^{33 Ref} And those who were in the boat gave him worship, saying, Truly you are the Son of God.

^{34 Ref} And when they had gone across, they came to land at Gennesaret.

^{35 Ref} And when the men of that place had news of him, they sent into all the country round about, and took to him all who were ill,

^{36 Ref} With the request that they might only put their hands on the edge of his robe: and all those who did so were made well.
