1 Corinthians 11

American Standard-ASV1901 (ASV)

1 Ref Be ye imitators of me, even as I also am of Christ.

2 Ref Now I praise you that ye remember me in all things, and hold fast the traditions, even as I delivered them to you.

3 Ref But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ; and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God.

4 Ref Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonoreth his head.

5 Ref But every woman praying or prophesying with her head unveiled dishonoreth her head; for it is one and the same thing as if she were shaven.

6 Ref For if a woman is not veiled, let her also be shorn: but if it is a shame to a woman to be shorn or shaven, let her be veiled.

7 Ref For a man indeed ought not to have his head veiled, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man.

8 Ref For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man:

9 Ref for neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man:

10 Ref for this cause ought the woman to have `a sign of' authority on her head, because of the angels.

11 Ref Nevertheless, neither is the woman without the man, nor the man without the woman, in the Lord.

12 Ref For as the woman is of the man, so is the man also by the woman; but all things are of God.

13 Ref Judge ye in yourselves: is it seemly that a woman pray unto God unveiled?

14 Ref Doth not even nature itself teach you, that, if a man have long hair, it is a dishonor to him?

15 But if a woman have long hair, it is a glory to her: for her hair is given her for a covering.

16 Ref But if any man seemeth to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the churches of God.

17 Ref But in giving you this charge, I praise you not, that ye come together not for the better but for the worse.

18 Ref For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that divisions exist among you; and I partly believe it.

19 Ref For there must be also factions among you, that they that are approved may be made manifest among you.

20 When therefore ye assemble yourselves together, it is not possible to eat the Lord's supper:

21 Ref for in your eating each one taketh before `other' his own supper; and one is hungry, and another is drunken.

22 Ref What, have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or despise ye the church of God, and put them to shame that have not? What shall I say to you? shall I praise you? In this I praise you not.

23 Ref For I received of the Lord that which also I delivered unto you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which he was betrayed took bread;

24 Ref and when he had given thanks, he brake it, and said, This is my body, which is for you: this do in remembrance of me.

25 Ref In like manner also the cup, after supper, saying, This cup is the new covenant in my blood: this do, as often as ye drink `it', in remembrance of me.

26 Ref For as often as ye eat this bread, and drink the cup, ye proclaim the Lord's death till he come.

27 Ref Wherefore whosoever shall eat the bread or drink the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner, shall be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.

28 Ref But let a man prove himself, and so let him eat of the bread, and drink of the cup.

29 Ref For he that eateth and drinketh, eateth and drinketh judgment unto himself, if he discern not the body.

30 Ref For this cause many among you are weak and sickly, and not a few sleep.

31 Ref But if we discerned ourselves, we should not be judged.

32 Ref But when we are judged, we are chastened of the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

33 Wherefore, my brethren, when ye come together to eat, wait one for another.

34 Ref If any man is hungry, let him eat at home; that your coming together be not unto judgment. And the rest will I set in order whensoever I come.

Young's Literal Translation (YLT)

1 Ref Followers of me become ye, as I also `am' of Christ.

2 Ref And I praise you, brethren, that in all things ye remember me, and according as I did deliver to you, the deliverances ye keep,

3 Ref and I wish you to know that of every man the head is the Christ, and the head of a woman is the husband, and the head of Christ is God.

4 Ref Every man praying or prophesying, having the head covered, doth dishonour his head,

5 Ref and every woman praying or prophesying with the head uncovered, doth dishonour her own head, for it is one and the same thing with her being shaven,

6 Ref for if a woman is not covered -- then let her be shorn, and if `it is' a shame for a woman to be shorn or shaven -- let her be covered;

7 Ref for a man, indeed, ought not to cover the head, being the image and glory of God, and a woman is the glory of a man,

8 Ref for a man is not of a woman, but a woman `is' of a man,

9 Ref for a man also was not created because of the woman, but a woman because of the man;

10 Ref because of this the woman ought to have `a token of' authority upon the head, because of the messengers;

11 Ref but neither `is' a man apart from a woman, nor a woman apart from a man, in the Lord,

12 Ref for as the woman `is' of the man, so also the man `is' through the woman, and the all things `are' of God.

13 Ref In your own selves judge ye; is it seemly for a woman uncovered to pray to God?

14 Ref doth not even nature itself teach you, that if a man indeed have long hair, a dishonour it is to him?

15 and a woman, if she have long hair, a glory it is to her, because the hair instead of a covering hath been given to her;

16 Ref and if any one doth think to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither the assemblies of God.

17 Ref And this declaring, I give no praise, because not for the better, but for the worse ye come together;

18 Ref for first, indeed, ye coming together in an assembly, I hear of divisions being among you, and partly I believe `it',

19 Ref for it behoveth sects also to be among you, that those approved may become manifest among you;

20 ye, then, coming together at the same place -- it is not to eat the Lord's supper;

21 Ref for each his own supper doth take before in the eating, and one is hungry, and another is drunk;

22 Ref why, have ye not houses to eat and to drink in? or the assembly of God do ye despise, and shame those not having? what may I say to you? shall I praise you in this? I do not praise!

23 Ref For I -- I received from the Lord that which also I did deliver to you, that the Lord Jesus in the night in which he was delivered up, took bread,

24 Ref and having given thanks, he brake, and said, `Take ye, eat ye, this is my body, that for you is being broken; this do ye -- to the remembrance of me.'

25 Ref In like manner also the cup after the supping, saying, `This cup is the new covenant in my blood; this do ye, as often as ye may drink `it' -- to the remembrance of me;'

26 Ref for as often as ye may eat this bread, and this cup may drink, the death of the Lord ye do shew forth -- till he may come;

27 Ref so that whoever may eat this bread or may drink the cup of the Lord unworthily, guilty he shall be of the body and blood of the Lord:

28 Ref and let a man be proving himself, and so of the bread let him eat, and of the cup let him drink;

29 Ref for he who is eating and drinking unworthily, judgment to himself he doth eat and drink -- not discerning the body of the Lord.

30 Ref Because of this, among you many `are' weak and sickly, and sleep do many;

31 Ref for if ourselves we were discerning, we would not be being judged,

32 Ref and being judged by the Lord, we are chastened, that with the world we may not be condemned;

33 so then, my brethren, coming together to eat, for one another wait ye;

34 Ref and if any one is hungry, at home let him eat, that to judgment ye may not come together; and the rest, whenever I may come, I shall arrange.

1 Ref Be imitators of me, even as I also am of Christ.

2 Ref Now I praise you, brothers, that you remember me in all things, and hold firm the traditions, even as I delivered them to you.

3 Ref But I would have you know that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is the man, and the head of Christ is God.

4 Ref Every man praying or prophesying, having his head covered, dishonors his head.

5 Ref But every woman praying or prophesying with her head unveiled dishonors her head. For it is one and the same thing as if she were shaved.

6 Ref For if a woman is not covered, let her also be shorn. But if it is shameful for a woman to be shorn or shaved, let her be covered.

7 Ref For a man indeed ought not to have his head covered, because he is the image and glory of God, but the woman is the glory of the man.

8 Ref For man is not from woman, but woman from man;

9 Ref for neither was man created for the woman, but woman for the man.

10 Ref For this cause the woman ought to have authority on her head, because of the angels.

11 Ref Nevertheless, neither is the woman independent of the man, nor the man independent of the woman, in the Lord.

12 Ref For as woman came from man, so a man also comes through a woman; but all things are from God.

13 Ref Judge for yourselves. Is it appropriate that a woman pray to God unveiled?

14 Ref Doesn't even nature itself teach you that if a man has long hair, it is a dishonor to him?

15 But if a woman has long hair, it is a glory to her, for her hair is given to her for a covering.

16 Ref But if any man seems to be contentious, we have no such custom, neither do God's assemblies.

17 Ref But in giving you this command, I don't praise you, that you come together not for the better but for the worse.

18 Ref For first of all, when you come together in the assembly, I hear that divisions exist among you, and I partly believe it.

19 Ref For there also must be factions among you, that those who are approved may be revealed among you.

20 When therefore you assemble yourselves together, it is not possible to eat the Lord's supper.

21 Ref For in your eating each one takes his own supper before others. One is hungry, and another is drunken.

22 Ref What, don't you have houses to eat and to drink in? Or do you despise God's assembly, and put them to shame who don't have? What shall I tell you? Shall I praise you? In this I don't praise you.

23 Ref For I received from the Lord that which also I delivered to you, that the Lord Jesus on the night in which he was betrayed took bread.

24 Ref When he had given thanks, he broke it, and said, "Take, eat. This is my body, which is broken for you. Do this in memory of me."

25 Ref In the same way he also took the cup, after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink, in memory of me."

26 Ref For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord's death until he comes.

27 Ref Therefore whoever eats this bread or drinks the Lord's cup in a manner unworthy of the Lord will be guilty of the body and the blood of the Lord.

28 Ref But let a man examine himself, and so let him eat of the bread, and drink of the cup.

29 Ref For he who eats and drinks in an unworthy manner eats and drinks judgment to himself, if he doesn't discern the Lord's body.

30 Ref For this cause many among you are weak and sickly, and not a few sleep.

31 Ref For if we discerned ourselves, we wouldn't be judged.

32 Ref But when we are judged, we are punished by the Lord, that we may not be condemned with the world.

33 Therefore, my brothers, when you come together to eat, wait one for another.

34 Ref But if anyone is hungry, let him eat at home, lest your coming together be for judgment. The rest I will set in order whenever I come.
