Matthew 13
American Standard-ASV1901 (ASV)
1 Ref On that day went Jesus out of the house, and sat by the sea side.
2 Ref And there were gathered unto him great multitudes, so that he entered into a boat, and sat; and all the multitude stood on the beach.
3 Ref And he spake to them many things in parables, saying, Behold, the sower went forth to sow;
4 Ref and as he sowed, some `seeds' fell by the way side, and the birds came and devoured them:
5 Ref and others fell upon the rocky places, where they had not much earth: and straightway they sprang up, because they had no deepness of earth:
6 Ref and when the sun was risen, they were scorched; and because they had no root, they withered away.
7 Ref And others fell upon the thorns; and the thorns grew up and choked them:
8 Ref and others fell upon the good ground, and yielded fruit, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
9 Ref He that hath ears, let him hear.
10 Ref And the disciples came, and said unto him, Why speakest thou unto them in parables?
11 Ref And he answered and said unto them, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
12 Ref For whosoever hath, to him shall be given, and he shall have abundance: but whosoever hath not, from him shall be taken away even that which he hath.
13 Ref Therefore speak I to them in parables; because seeing they see not, and hearing they hear not, neither do they understand.
14 Ref And unto them is fulfilled the prophecy of Isaiah, which saith, By hearing ye shall hear, and shall in no wise understand; And seeing ye shall see, and shall in no wise perceive:
15 Ref For this people's heart is waxed gross, And their ears are dull of hearing, And their eyes they have closed; Lest haply they should perceive with their eyes, And hear with their ears, And understand with their heart, And should turn again, And I should heal them.
16 Ref But blessed are your eyes, for they see; and your ears, for they hear.
17 Ref For verily I say unto you, that many prophets and righteous men desired to see the things which ye see, and saw them not; and to hear the things which ye hear, and heard them not.
18 Ref Hear then ye the parable of the sower.
19 Ref When any one heareth the word of the kingdom, and understandeth it not, `then' cometh the evil `one', and snatcheth away that which hath been sown in his heart. This is he that was sown by the way side.
20 Ref And he that was sown upon the rocky places, this is he that heareth the word, and straightway with joy receiveth it;
21 Ref yet hath he not root in himself, but endureth for a while; and when tribulation or persecution ariseth because of the word, straightway he stumbleth.
22 Ref And he that was sown among the thorns, this is he that heareth the word; and the care of the world, and the deceitfulness of riches, choke the word, and he becometh unfruitful.
23 Ref And he that was sown upon the good ground, this is he that heareth the word, and understandeth it; who verily beareth fruit, and bringeth forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty.
24 Ref Another parable set he before them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is likened unto a man that sowed good seed in his field:
25 Ref but while men slept, his enemy came and sowed tares also among the wheat, and went away.
26 Ref But when the blade sprang up and brought forth fruit, then appeared the tares also.
27 Ref And the servants of the householder came and said unto him, Sir, didst thou not sow good seed in thy field? whence then hath it tares?
28 Ref And he said unto them, An enemy hath done this. And the servants say unto him, Wilt thou then that we go and gather them up?
29 But he saith, Nay; lest haply while ye gather up the tares, ye root up the wheat with them.
30 Ref Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of the harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather up first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them; but gather the wheat into my barn.
31 Ref Another parable set he before them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like unto a grain of mustard seed, which a man took, and sowed in his field:
32 Ref which indeed is less than all seeds; but when it is grown, it is greater than the herbs, and becometh a tree, so that the birds of the heaven come and lodge in the branches thereof.
33 Ref Another parable spake he unto them; The kingdom of heaven is like unto leaven, which a woman took, and hid in three measures of meal, till it was all leavened.
34 Ref All these things spake Jesus in parables unto the multitudes; and without a parable spake he nothing unto them:
35 Ref that it might be fulfilled which was spoken through the prophet, saying, I will open my mouth in parables; I will utter things hidden from the foundation of the world.
36 Ref Then he left the multitudes, and went into the house: and his disciples came unto him, saying, Explain unto us the parable of the tares of the field.
37 Ref And he answered and said, He that soweth the good seed is the Son of man;
38 Ref and the field is the world; and the good seed, these are the sons of the kingdom; and the tares are the sons of the evil `one';
39 Ref and the enemy that sowed them is the devil: and the harvest is the end of the world; and the reapers are angels.
40 Ref As therefore the tares are gathered up and burned with fire; so shall it be in the end of the world.
41 Ref The Son of man shall send forth his angels, and they shall gather out of his kingdom all things that cause stumbling, and them that do iniquity,
42 Ref and shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.
43 Ref Then shall the righteous shine forth as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He that hath ears, let him hear.
44 Ref The kingdom of heaven is like unto a treasure hidden in the field; which a man found, and hid; and in his joy he goeth and selleth all that he hath, and buyeth that field.
45 Ref Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a merchant seeking goodly pearls:
46 Ref and having found one pearl of great price, he went and sold all that he had, and bought it.
47 Ref Again, the kingdom of heaven is like unto a net, that was cast into the sea, and gathered of every kind:
48 Ref which, when it was filled, they drew up on the beach; and they sat down, and gathered the good into vessels, but the bad they cast away.
49 Ref So shall it be in the end of the world: the angels shall come forth, and sever the wicked from among the righteous,
50 Ref and shall cast them into the furnace of fire: there shall be the weeping and the gnashing of teeth.
51 Ref Have ye understood all these things? They say unto him, Yea.
52 Ref And he said unto them, Therefore every scribe who hath been made a disciple to the kingdom of heaven is like unto a man that is a householder, who bringeth forth out of his treasure things new and old.
53 Ref And it came to pass, when Jesus had finished these parables, he departed thence.
54 Ref And coming into his own country he taught them in their synagogue, insomuch that they were astonished, and said, Whence hath this man this wisdom, and these mighty works?
55 Ref Is not this the carpenter's son? is not his mother called Mary? and his brethren, James, and Joseph, and Simon, and Judas?
56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? Whence then hath this man all these things?
57 Ref And they were offended in him. But Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honor, save in his own country, and in his own house.
58 Ref And he did not many mighty works there because of their unbelief.
Bible in Basic English (BBE)
1 Ref On that day Jesus went out of the house and was seated by the seaside.
2 Ref And great numbers of people came together to him, so that he got into a boat; and the people took up their position by the sea.
3 Ref And he gave them teaching in the form of a story, saying, A man went out to put seed in the earth;
4 Ref And while he did so, some seeds were dropped by the wayside, and the birds came and took them for food:
5 Ref And some of the seed went among the stones, where it had not much earth, and straight away it came up because the earth was not deep:
6 Ref And when the sun was high, it was burned; and because it had no root it became dry and dead.
7 Ref And some seeds went among thorns, and the thorns came up and they had no room for growth:
8 Ref And some, falling on good earth, gave fruit, some a hundred, some sixty, some thirty times as much.
9 Ref He who has ears, let him give ear.
10 Ref And the disciples came and said to him, Why do you say things to them in the form of stories?
11 Ref And he said to them in answer, To you is given the knowledge of the secrets of the kingdom of heaven, but to them it is not given.
12 Ref Because whoever has, to him will be given, and he will have more; but from him who has not, even what he has will be taken away.
13 Ref For this reason I put things into the form of stories; because they see without seeing, and give ear without hearing, and the sense is not clear to them.
14 Ref And for them the words of Isaiah have come true, Though you give ear, you will not get knowledge; and seeing, you will see, but the sense will not be clear to you:
15 Ref For the heart of this people has become fat and their ears are slow in hearing and their eyes are shut; for fear that they might see with their eyes and give hearing with their ears and become wise in their hearts and be turned again to me, so that I might make them well.
16 Ref But a blessing be on your eyes, because they see; and on your ears, because they are open.
17 Ref For truly, I say to you that prophets and upright men had a desire to see the things which you see, and saw them not; and to have knowledge of the words which have come to your ears, and they had it not.
18 Ref Give ear, then, to the story of the man who put the seed in the earth.
19 Ref When the word of the kingdom comes to anyone, and the sense of it is not clear to him, then the Evil One comes, and quickly takes away that which was put in his heart. He is the seed dropped by the wayside.
20 Ref And that which went on the stones, this is he who, hearing the word, straight away takes it with joy;
21 Ref But having no root in himself, he goes on for a time; and when trouble comes or pain, because of the word, he quickly becomes full of doubts.
22 Ref And that which was dropped among the thorns, this is he who has the word; and the cares of this life, and the deceits of wealth, put a stop to the growth of the word and it gives no fruit.
23 Ref And the seed which was put in good earth, this is he who gives ear to the word, and gets the sense of it; who gives fruit, some a hundred, some sixty, some thirty times as much.
24 Ref And he gave them another story, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a man who put good seed in his field:
25 Ref But while men were sleeping, one who had hate for him came and put evil seeds among the grain, and went away.
26 Ref But when the green stem came up and gave fruit, the evil plants were seen at the same time.
27 Ref And the servants of the master of the house came and said to him, Sir, did you not put good seed in your field? how then has it evil plants?
28 Ref And he said, Someone has done this in hate. And the servants say to him, Is it your pleasure that we go and take them up?
29 But he says, No, for fear that by chance while you take up the evil plants, you may be rooting up the grain with them.
30 Ref Let them come up together till the getting in of the grain; and then I will say to the workers, Take up first the evil plants, and put them together for burning: but put the grain into my store-house.
31 Ref He put another story before them, saying, The kingdom of heaven is like a grain of mustard seed which a man took and put in his field:
32 Ref Which is smaller than all seeds; but when it has come up it is greater than the plants, and becomes a tree, so that the birds of heaven come and make their resting-places in its branches.
33 Ref Another story he gave to them: The kingdom of heaven is like leaven, which a woman took, and put in three measures of meal, till it was all leavened.
34 Ref All these things Jesus said to the people in the form of stories; and without a story he said nothing to them:
35 Ref That it might come true which was said by the prophet, Opening my mouth, I will give out stories; I will give knowledge of things kept secret from before all time.
36 Ref Then he went away from the people, and went into the house; and his disciples came to him, saying, Make clear to us the story of the evil plants in the field.
37 Ref And he made answer and said, He who puts the good seed in the earth is the Son of man;
38 Ref And the field is the world; and the good seed is the sons of the kingdom; and the evil seeds are the sons of the Evil One;
39 Ref And he who put them in the earth is Satan; and the getting in of the grain is the end of the world; and those who get it in are the angels.
40 Ref As then the evil plants are got together and burned with fire, so will it be in the end of the world.
41 Ref The Son of man will send out his angels, and they will take out of his kingdom everything which is a cause of error, and all those who do wrong,
42 Ref And will put them into the fire; there will be weeping and cries of sorrow.
43 Ref Then will the upright be shining as the sun in the kingdom of their Father. He who has ears, let him give ear.
44 Ref The kingdom of heaven is like a secret store of wealth in a field, which a man came across and put back again; and in his joy he goes and gives all he has, to get that field.
45 Ref Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a trader searching for beautiful jewels.
46 Ref And having come across one jewel of great price, he went and gave all he had in exchange for it.
47 Ref Again, the kingdom of heaven is like a net, which was put into the sea and took in every sort of fish:
48 Ref When it was full, they took it up on the sands; and seated there they put the good into vessels, but the bad they put away.
49 Ref So will it be in the end of the world: the angels will come and take out the bad from the good,
50 Ref And will put them into the fire: there will be weeping and cries of sorrow.
51 Ref Are all these things now clear to you? They say to him, Yes.
52 Ref And he said to them, For this reason every scribe who has become a disciple of the kingdom of heaven is like the owner of a house, who gives out from his store things new and old.
53 Ref And when Jesus had come to the end of these stories he went away from there.
54 Ref And coming into his country, he gave them teaching in their Synagogue, so that they were greatly surprised and said, Where did this man get this wisdom and these works of power?
55 Ref Is not this the woodworker's son? is not his mother named Mary? and his brothers James and Joseph and Simon and Judas?
56 And his sisters, are they not all with us? from where, then, has he all these things?
57 Ref And they were bitter against him. But Jesus said to them, A prophet is nowhere without honour but in his country and among his family.
58 Ref And the works of power which he did there were small in number because they had no faith.
